Everything in the house is electric – heating, lighting, cooking, etc. We have ground source heating in the main house ( 3 bed croft cottage) and air source in the flat. All fully insulated, new doors and windows 12 years ago.

Electricity. i sometimes read the column in the paper about how someone manages their money and they always seem to spend around £20-£50 per month on their utilities bill. Our monthly direct debit is £238 for electricity.

Apology accepted. The question of mobile phones is very tricky and also tied up with issues of peer pressure and self-esteem, not really the place to go into this.

I think maybe the guest network idea is worth pursuing. The only way it appears I can set up time restrictions on our modem requires using MAC addresses to identify the individual phones, and if these are now changeable it is going to be unworkable. I don’t think iPhone specific solutions are practical as they have a variety of devices – Apple, Android, Windows in phones, tablets and laptops.

    Thanks for all the suggestions.

    @Cougar

Take it off them, then. Don’t you have any adults in the house?

Yes, we do. And we are trying to do our best to provide a home for vulnerable and disadvantaged children. We can’t just take their phones as these have usually been given by family members, and family contact is very important.

If this is the most helpful comment you can offer…

    End of topic.

The guest network looks like it could be the answer, I’ll look at setting that up.

I can also limit their mobile data as they are all on family phone package. I just don’t want them spending the whole time poring over their phones. We have 3 14yr olds and it’s hard to get them doing anything with 24hr phone access.

The control is basically to determine the times for which they have WiFi access. We don’t want them being on the phone at all hours of the day. We are foster carers and the children would be regarded as potentially vulnerable, so we have to take whatever measures we can. Clearly something which can just be switched on or off by the child is not much use to us.

This is what I have been reading. It’s supposed to be a security feature to prevent the device being tracked, or something. If I disable this there isn’t anything I can do to stop the user from just switching it back on. So it would circumvent the parental controls I have set, without my consent or agreement. From my perspective this not a security feature.

Nissan Navara Tekna here, had it about 5 months replacing Shogunsport. Not happy with it. We have quite specific requirements – must be able to tow 3 tonnes (horse box), room for 3 kids and dog + bikes.

Longer than a supermarket parking space, awkward to manoevre, restricted rear view (with canopy rear view is through 3 glass windows). It also seems prone to niggling electrical problems.

I’d like to get rid of it but need the towing capacity. I’ve had Discoverys and don’t want to go back. If the only option is another pickup, I’m thinking get a small car for local use and keep Navara just for towing (expensive option).

Latest news – GLP have been granted a cost capping order in their judicial review over the award the PPE contracts. Government claimed their defence would cost £1million, GLP asked for a cap of £100k. The judge has granted £250k cap. They will still need support from donations to fight this case.

Not quite clear on your requirements here. Do you just want a watch that will record activities without a phone present or do you need internet access for Spotify and contactless?

I have a Garmin Forerunner 45 which will do the former, just sync with phone app when back home. If I have the phone with me it will notify emails via the phone but nothing else.

Missed this last night, my Kindle won’t play it so I’ll watch later. I know Jake, quite a character. I wouldn’t say he’s very remote, his house is on one of the main forest roads in the Clash, about half a mile off the A941 Rhynie to Dufftown road.

Also look for the film  ‘Two Years at Sea’ about Jake.

From your suggestions, Garmin Forerunner 45 was looking good. Checked out on Google and found for £125 incl. post. I did look at some of the others but they were generally over budget. Found it on runningxpress website, quoted 2-3 weeks delivery so I just have to wait. It seems to offer all I was looking for plus a couple more.

    Thanks for your help guys.

Hey presto, impoverished experience for all.

Absolutely. For example, we have three 13yr olds here with a wide range of abilities, all in the same school year and class. They have been set  five maths tasks which are revision of stuff I know they did last March – we’re in the third term of this year now, still revising. One of them will finish each task in about 10 minutes and is then bored and disruptive, another is literally still counting on her fingers. But we have to be inclusive…

The majority of Scottish school pupils are learning from home, with a combination of set tasks and online sessions with teachers – Swinney quote

First week over – on-line session total 1 x 30mins for 1child out of 3. Still, I suppose this is better than last time…  Set tasks seem to be much the same as the ones they were given last year, and the kids claim they also did in P7 (now in S2).

OK, I’ll ask another way. How did you vote last time and are you likely to change your vote next time (whenever that is)?

My wife and I moved to Scotland in 2004, live in rural Aberdeenshire and couldn’t contemplate moving back. We voted No last time but would now seriously consider voting Yes. I have reservations about the SNP tendency to centralisation and would need convinced on monetary issues but we need to get away from BoJo and his bunch of clowns. NS has shown more convincing leadership and responsibility over CoVid. I think Scotland has the potential to be a more equitable country.

I wondered whether a file had been uploaded,e.g. index.html, index.php or a new .htaccess. Any of these could trigger a redirection. I don’t have access at the moment to the server to check, and am a bit reluctant to do it in case I get hacked as well.

We have geothermal/UFH, had it for about 12 years and still not certain how it functions in some circumstances.

Each zone/room has a thermostat except the bathrooms which heat whenever the heat pump is working, i.e. if one or more zones is open. The system is not timed to operate and relies on the thermostats to switch on and off, this uses the concrete floors as heat stores to maintain and avoids repeated heating and cooling of the floors.

Hot water is provided using a large storage tank. This is heated 3 times a day by the heat pump, hot water then is drawn from a heat exchanger which heats incoming water supply as required and recirculates to the tank.

We have a wood-burning range cooker in the kitchen but haven’t used it for some years as it makes the room uncomfortably hot.

It is very expensive to run on electricity but the alternative would be oil or gas which we don’t have. Upside, the house is generally warm.

Compared to the one it’s just replaced, it doesn’t have terminal rust in the chassis. Also does a bit more to the gallon.

I have a problem with the consistency of my bread. The top of the loaf comes out very open and thin, it’s impossible to spread butter without it tearing apart.

You can see in the photo, the top inch or two. I have tried various recipes and varying the yeast and water quantities but makes no difference. The machine is a Panasonic SD-2511. Any suggestions welcome.

This is the page  content I get on Silk:

<span style=”font-size: 0.8rem;”>singletrackworld.com normally uses encryption to protect your information. When Silk tried to connect to singletrackworld.com this time, the website sent back unusual and incorrect credentials. This may happen when an attacker is trying to pretend to be singletrackworld.com, or a Wi-Fi sign-in screen has interrupted the connection. Your information is still secure because Silk stopped the connection before any data was exchanged.</span>
<p id=”final-paragraph”>You cannot visit singletrackworld.com right now because the website uses HSTS. Network errors and attacks are usually temporary, so this page will probably work later.”</p>
This has been the same for weeks.

Had this problem for a while now on my Kindle Fire using the Silk browser. I think it’s a problem with their security certificate. I can use Chrome browser but it is not secure.

Had to cancel our annual Aviemore visit for May Bank Holiday, staying at Loch Insh Water sports. Heard they were opening up again so managed to book 6 nights from 10 July. After home schooling 3 13yr olds for 15 weeks we need the break.

The vehicle is clearly genuine as I got the MoT history from the government website, and the photographs are obviously of the vehicle. But I guess ‘if it looks too good to be true it probably is’. I’ll get back to searching. Reported to Ebay.

Pace Racewear smock/jacket, must be at least 25 yrs old. Acquired in a clearance sale by Pace IIRC reduced from £150 to £50. My favourite waterproof top although not as waterproof as it was despite several reproofings.

Endura jacket, can’t remember which one, which is older, still wear occasionally. Also been reproofed several times but has a couple of small ‘war wounds’.

Older still would be a waxed cotton drovers mac for horse riding. Stopped riding some years ago and not worn since, before that was in regular use on long distance trail rides.
