Octopus Tracker needs a smart meter, which we don’t have. I should probably contact Octopus and check alternative tariffs. I’m due to send the monthly meter reading on 23rd so I’ll wait until after that.

@J273  @alan1977

Tariff is Flexible Octopus:
Unit rate (Day) 29.41p per kW/h
Unit rate (Night) 13.02p per kW/h
Standing charge 57.31p/day

The heat pumps are run continuously, relying on individual room thermostats to control demand. We were advised this was the way to run heat pumps with U/F heating. This avoids having to heat the concrete floor from a low temperature twice a day and should maintain a more even temperature.

Thanks guys, that’s really useful. I guess I need to contact a heating engineer.
As well as being ASHP installers, the company who installed ours are refrigeration engineers, and will be carrying out its annual service in December. So perhaps they would be good to ask.

We recently had to replace our tow car. We needed to tow 3.5t; two horses + feed and gear.

We had been using a pickup (Nissan ) but found it difficult to manoeuvre around our yard being longer than 4×4.

We ended up with a Ssangyong Rexton. Generally pleased with this.

Just to return to this for a last time:

I have connected the printer to the router by the USB port. The printer is connected to the wifi network wih the IP address 192.168.187.43. So both the PC and the printer are directly connected to the same network. Printer Information Report says connected to the network, IP address as above, signal strength is excellent, connected to internet.

Run hp-setup and hp-setup 192.168.178.43. No printer detected. Yast, CUPS no printer detected. HP Smart app shows the printer but not available.

I think it’s time to give up!

avahi-utils wasn’t installed, is now.

avahi-browse -at lists both Epson printer and HP 2820 printer

I can run hp-setup but then need to temporarily connect by USB to start the process. The printer was not supplied with a cable so i will have to buy one. Then I can try again but I would be concerned that the PC is outside the range of the router wifi. That will be problem for another day!

Tried nmap to identify open ports:

mike@linux:~> nmap 192.168.178.43
Starting Nmap 7.70 ( https://nmap.org ) at 2024-05-02 10:49 BST
Nmap scan report for HP021FD6.fritz.box (192.168.178.43)
Host is up (0.0026s latency).
Not shown: 995 closed ports
PORT STATE SERVICE
80/tcp open http
443/tcp open https
631/tcp open ipp
8080/tcp open http-proxy
9100/tcp open jetdirect

Nmap done: 1 IP address (1 host up) scanned in 6.56 seconds

Appears to recognise the printer HPO21FD6 on that IP address.

Update time:

What does it do that the Epson doesn’t?

Epson printer is over 5 years old and regularly has cartridge problems.

systemctl | grep cups

shows cups-browsed.service is running

sudo systemctl stop firewalld

makes no difference, still can’t see the printer.

avahi and cups installed. maybe need to look at cps-browsed service. Not at the machine just now, will check later.

Printers are arsholes at the best of times

Especially , in my experience, with Linux. I’ve been using it for 20 years and every time I install a new version or distribution it always seems to be printers that cause problems.

we can print to the machine from tablets and smartphones in the house. It’s just my PC which can’t.

Sympathise with @scotroutes. I have hearing loss as well. I find it difficult in social situations, can’t follow conversations, hard even to distinguish words in peoples speech. So I try to avoid social settings.

Since CoVid lockdown in 2020 we have almost stopped going out so have lost contact with the few friends I still had kept in with.

For the left-hnd figure:

Let the corners be A to D starting at the bottom left anticlockwise,Using the Cosine Rule – BD=1.618, then for triangle ABD angle at B=angle at D=36.So for triangle BCD – BD=1.618, BC=1, angle at D=54-36=18Using Cosine Rule – angle abc=132Then angle de= 360-(108+54+132) = 66

Correction::In line 4, should read AC=1.414

mikejd
Full Member

For the right hand figure:

Let the corners be A to D starting from the bottom left anticlockwise
Sides AB=BC=CD.=1, AC=1.414 (root 2)
Then for triangle ACD, using the Cosine Rule,
AD=1.414, CD=1, included angle=105, angle di=45
Angle fg = 360-(105+90+45) = 75

Haven’t tried it for the other figure yet.

Our air source heat pump has two units, one outdoor and one indoor. The Samsung looks like the outdoor and the Dakine the indoor. These systems operate at a lower temperature to a normal heating system, so probably need a different HW cyliner to allow for this.

A couple of things that never seem to be mentioned:
1). Because of the lower temperature heat pumps work best with underfloor heating, or radiators have to be up-sized to suit.
2). They work better with a well insulated building.

I had one mounted to a board by a framing shop. I asked for fibre board, which I think is soft and can stick pins in but they used hardboard. Didn’t want to scrap it and couldn’t see how it could be removed from the board without ripping so screwed it to the wall as it was. Still there a few years later and refer to it frequently. Not sure that helps?

We’ve just bought a Ssangyong Rexton. We had a specific requirement that it had to be capable of towing 3 tonnes for a horsebox. It has 7 seats, 4 wheel drive, good ground clearance. Much improved driving experience to our previous Nissan Navara, which was a pig.

Been taking omeprazol for over 10 years. Don’t think I’ve experienced any side effects.

I’ve just picked my repeat prescription which I forgot to order last week. I’ve been without for about 5 days and it’s been painful. The acid was back within the first day of no capsules, been popping Rennies and chugging Peptac liquid to try to alleviate.

She has a bike but I don’t think she would ride that distance, it would probably take over an hour each way. It would also be along the A97, which I wouldn’t be happy riding, let alone her.

Our problem is not so much the willingness/interest of teens for work (although this is an issue) but the actual availability of any suitable vacancies. We stay just outside a small village in Aberdeenshire, 10 miles from the nearest small market town with no public transport. One of our teens tried a job at the chippy in the town for a while but this involved us in transport which took 45 minutes and 20 miles in the car possibly twice for each shift. It stopped when they were asked to increase from 2 shifts a week to 5.

They have now applied for another job at a hotel 15 miles away. If they get it I’m not sure how we will manage to support it. But I don’t want to discourage them from working.

Are people using their phones to take these photos? if so, do you need to use a particular setting for long exposure.

I’ve only ever seen the aurora from here, Rhynie Aberdeenshire, once and it was so faint that I was not sure. Others seem to have taken good photos locally. I wondered if they are enhanced by the camera somehow.

Just been searching for info on this on the CritterMap website and found this advice:

How to Get Application without Paying / Re-Purchasing again.

A: Just log on to Google Play using the email address you used to initially buy the application before.

Play will automatically sync your purchase history and should not charge you again.

Official Play Documentation: http://support.google.com/googleplay/bin/answer.py?hl=en-AU&answer=113410

Checked on Google Play and it appears to have logged me in to my account automatically so my install from there doesn’t require payment.

Waiting to see what happens.

Still not clear whats going on. Thanks for everyones input.

I have Google Play Store installed on my Kindle Fire, and this is where I installed it from. I’m guessing the install on my phone was done using my Googlemail account but I haven’t been asked for this information by this install yet, not that I can remember it. OS maps are available from Bing. At the moment I don’t have any tracks available to view but I will try to import some of my old tracks or perhaps copy over from my PC. I don’t propose to use this for actually recording tracks just viewing online. I guess this may be a trial install and I will be asked for purchasing information at some point.

As a last resort, if it isn’t working, I may just have to contact BCN support.

Thanks all for your comments.

I think we would have a problem with a poor signal so not optimistic, can’t really see any actual benefits to me. Other than possibly, as said above, highlighting periods of high usage.

I know we have a very high usage, I get an estimate of annual consumption on every bill (Octopus) and this is currently almost 20000kWh/year. So I would be keen to identify possible savings…

Best of luck with the MAC address thing. I tried this with 3 different routers. Set up access times for each MAC, everything looks okay. Next day the MAC numbers are different, it appears that the phone software changes the number each time they login.
