It’s interesting that you seem to have complete faith in alien life but mock those who have faith in a creator. You see any paradox there?

I know you’re not addressing me, but I don’tn see a paradox. I can see how someone could, but there seems to me to be a substantial gulf between “I think there’s probably other life in the universe because it’s a very very big place containing many planets similar to our own” and “the whole lot was made by a man with a beard”.

The difference is that someone always will win the lottery

They’re wasting their time with this “rollover” caper, then.

Your blood pressure can also drop as a result of quickly emptying a full bladder, which will make you feel cold. Or cause you to pass out.

does anyone do conversions where the front seats spin/turn into beds/whatever?

Rotating front seats are pretty much standard issue.

    Mike – it’s 14lb

OK. I’m just going off what the internets say.

    is undergeared for intended use/quote]

“Intended use” being “BMX racing”? 36/16 is a keen gear for a four year old just riding along, IMHO.

and standover is def not more than a cnoc16. (got one in the loft if you want real life measurements)

Again, just going off manufacturer’s recommendations. Not sure that standover’s all that relevant, the relatively high BB on the Redline doesn’t look ideal given that most folk here are probably looking for a bike for “sitting down” kind of riding.

Like all sorts of bikes, the best option depends on what you (or your kids) want to do with it.

My sister-in-law’s converting an LWB T5 at the moment. They’ve got a Reimo rear seat/bad on tracks in the floor. Slides forwards for travelling and leaves room behind for fully-built bikes stood up lengthwise. They have to come out to put the seat into bed mode, but for stopovers they’ve got a poptop with a roof bed in it (they’re only small 😉 ).

That Redline does look smart. Recommended height is 4in taller than the Cnoc 16, though, which is quite a lot for littl’uns. Stock gearing looks a bit enthusiastic as well. But yes, it’s 1.5lb (or 10%) lighter for your extra £100.

Having played with arc (“stick”) and MIG welders, I bought a used MIG set. Not that I’ve actually done anything with it yet 🙂

Depends a bit what sort of stuff you want to do and how much you want to spend. I found MIG much more rewarding (and neater) but arc sets are cheap and easy to use.

    (Disclaimer: I’m an utter novice 🙂 )

May have led the existing word “crap”, meaning rubbish, clutter, or nonsense to take on a second toilet-based definition.

“Crapping ken” as a toilet was recorded in 1846, apparently. Thomas Crapper was 10 at the time, I doubt he had much to do with it 🙂

    175/65 R14. Continental TS800. About 3000 miles on them.

Would let them go for arounf £150. In edinburgh.

That was all going so well until the “in Edinburgh” bit 😉

Just trying to work out how the BBC can simultaneously be “state-controlled” and also exhibit “left-wing bias”. I’m thinking that one of these things (and possibly both) may be untrue 😉

Pushing hard from the saddle’s not a great idea. Stand when it gets hard. The only time I have knee issues is from grinding big heavy bikes — of the sort where standing up really doesn’t work — up long hills.

I reckon the BBC needs to sack off its Sports coverage completely.

+1. I’m more than happy for my license fee to make programmes. I’m not entirely happy about a chunk of it just ending up in the pockets of Bernie Ecclestone and a bunch of footballers.

Used to race 1/10 ‘leccy buggies a lot, but couldn’t afford that and bikes. Occasionally look at getting into it again, but it’s not got any cheaper. Maybe a Tamiya Mini thing for cheapness/close racing.

Turbo Optima Mid was my favourite car — got a Lazer ZX after that but it was so fast/capable/easy to drive that it was actually a bit boring. The Mid was somewhat more lairy and entertaining.

I did think that the results at London would be heavily skewed by all the people running dressed as whales or in clown shoes or scuba gear or wotnot, with a big “hole” between the proper fast and the rest. But it turns out that the distribution of times at London is quite close to normal:

    2:00-2:30 58 (0.16%)
    2:30-3:00 991 (2.85%)
    3:00-3:30 2951 (8.5%)
    3:30-4:00 5373 (15.4%)
    4:00-4:30 7061 (20.3%)
    4:30-5:00 7147 (20.5%)
    5:00-5:30 5113 (14.7%)
    5:30-6:00 3127 (9.0%)
    6:00-6:30 1516 (4.4%)
    (Over 6:30 (ie brisk walking pace) 1469 (4.22%) )

Given that under 4:00 is on the fast side of the “hump”, describing it as “decent” (ie not “fast”) doesn’t seem unjustified.

    I’m aiming for 3:30 😉

Under four hours would put you comfortably in the top third in the London Marathon, which doesn’t sound too shabby to me.

always assumed that fitness will transfer directly to running

Cardiovascular fitness yes. But your legs are all wrong. Which I reckon is why lots of cyclists get injured when starting to run — going into it reasonably fit means it’s easy to push too hard on legs that aren’t used to the different demands. Possibly.
