    went from a Patriot to a 456, now on a Trance-X. Have still got the 456 🙂

My 2 cents – I'm 5'10" and recently built up a medium 2009 Trance X with a 65mm stem which feels right for me. Running Conti Vertical 2.35s without issues, Pike U-turns up front. I have 'downsized' from a Patriot but so far the Giant has been impressive; goes up well and flies down. Still haven't got to grips with the RP2 shock, but would say the platform setting does make a difference. As you say, I think this bike would be fine for 90% of the riding that most of us do.

No such thing as a 'do it all' bike – am currently building up a Giant Trance X frame with Pikes which will be my 'do most of it all' bike 🙂

We went with Keycamp to Camping des Menhirs in Carnac in June/July – stayed in a static caravan – would recommend.

I've got a 2004 Patriot frame (16") with 5th element coil platform shock, for which I bought a set of Lyriks. Frame and shock both in good nick for age. Now looking to sell frame and shock, can do pics if interested.

It's a bit of a bugger uphill, but flies downhill, and floats surprisingly well 🙂

Two of my bikes have HT11 bottom brackets fitted. One frame has been 'faced' the other hasn't. Guess what? One's as sweet as the other in performance. So toss a coin.

Thanks for the info, guys. Like I said, it'll be a while till I actually get to use the forks in anger but now I know what to expect. To think that the forks that these ones are replacing used to have too much oil in them…

    Hi Sean

I've got a 2004 Patriot, which has been in my garage in bits for a while now, but I have decided to rebuild and revamp it. I am currently considering either a Talas 36 or Lyrik U-turn fork for it. As others have said, I don't think a Lyrik 2-step offers as useful a range of settings as the other two?

I'm 5'10 with 32" leg and on a 16" frame with 50 mm stem. It works for me.

OK. The Patriot is now lying in bits in the garage. The frame is really light, once you strip it down. I think I’m going to keep it, but experiment with lighter parts to see if I can put a bit of zip into it. I now know that my fork weighs 2.67 kilos and the rear shock weighs 1 kilo. That’s a lot of bags of sugar.

Konas Kilauea; On-One 456; Orange Patriot (although now thinking of getting something a bit nimbler).

Go for it. I did my training in Honduras and then did some more in Belize. All good. That was a while ago, mind, and I’ve never felt the urge to dive over here since then. As others have said, if you’re going to learn and you’ve got the opportunity, go somewhere where the sea is warm; I don’t know if I could be bothered with practicing in a swimming pool at home.

I bought a laptop from Dell. Like others have said, when I ordered it I was speaking to someone in India, which led to a few comedy moments, but in the end I got a better spec for less money than advertised in the paper. Would I buy from them again? Probably.

Not now. Maybe after the summer? Winter project? What do you mean, I’ve already got three other bikes…

I have a 1994 Kona Kilauea frame languishing in the garage (triple butted tange prestige steel was cutting edge back in the day).

Must resist the temptation to restore it to its former glory…
