Day complete, and only other issue come across is Virusbarrier X6 needs to be updated, and Spideroak refuses to automatically launch on startup.

Very impressed with improvements, gestures very handy, and “mission control” proving usefull. As above the history scroll in Safari is brilliant !

On a Macbook Pro with SSD sleep and restart is instantaneous as well (previously 10’ish seconds) and everything else feels generally “snappier”

ski, sounds like the lower oil seal may have gone, had similar issues with a set of Reba teams. At the base of the oil chamber are two o-rings, an inner and outer. They prevent the oil from draining into the lower legs. In my case the inner had rolled slightly as the shaft passed through causing a flattened edge.

Google said to let all the air out, pump it up and down a few times and see if you get full travel / lockout. If not indicates above

Next easiest check would be to drain the oil out of the lowers on the damper side, if its more that the 15cc’s id be replacing the o’rings.

Obviously there may be other problems with similar symptoms … this is just my experience.

Ive got a Thinktank Shapeshifter stored away somewhere if interested

    Thinktank

I swear by the thinktank stuff, use their combination belt system for the majority of weddings etc. Purchased the Shapeshifter when was doing a lot of traveling around, but just don’t get on with packs to work out of on a day to day basis instead relying on Pelicases / dome bags hence its hardly been used.

Its a very handy design though featuring a range of neoprene drawcord pockets inside, so everything is stored vertically so the pack is not as deep as others (ie lowpros etc) and will swallow a 17 inch MBP with ease.

Be cautious of the Asda carpark, after going to an event there a few months ago we got an “infringement notice’ through the post for overstaying the 2 hour limit. The vue carpark on the other hand is a good un.

Welcome to doncaster … we hope you survive your stay.

If you are contemplating surgery, and can cover the cost really recommend you see a consultant about the Dual-trak screw treatment. Rather than opening the shoulder and plating the outside of the bone, an small incision is made at the head of the shoulder, and another over the site of the break. The bone is then taped and a screw threaded through the length of the bone. Two friends have had this procedure done (admittedly neither in the UK) and have had outstanding results.

No plate discomfort, no secondary surgery to remove hardware and a very very strong bone. The main warning given was the increased risk of a distal break as opposed to a medial.

    1) Depends on aspect ratio 16:9 its wide and low so doesn’t seem as big as it sounds. The traditional 4:3 or similar obviously stand a lot higher. Its very much a personal thing, I work on a 30″ monitor with a 12″ Wacom tablet and love it where as others simply hate it by comparison. 23″ – 24″ is a good compromise though and majority of people are comfortable with it.

EDIT : also depends how far away you are from it … a 50 inch plasma screen in a cinema isn’t big … same screen in a bathroom certainly is so factor in screen / stand depth if space is tight.

    2) Any screen can be calibrated with the correct equipment, and dependant on the colour profile created fairly / very accurate. Colour space is more important here. We have a whole variety of monitors from 5 year old Viewsonics to Apples and a large range of Dells. All are calibrated with a Spyder 3 Pro. Some tend to need calibration more often, and drift as they warm up etc but unless you are doing hyper critical work all are sufficient.

If you are looking for something to edit on then an extra £100 to the budget is going to be well spent, ie the Dell Ultrasharp range, or the Samsung Syncmasters.

After speaking to the SO’s surgical friends, think the NHS attitude is that you can function just fine without a joined collarbone (or even a collarbone at all) so for them its all about pain management hence the paper bag full of pills, and the good as useless sling.

Defo get along to see the physio, pulsed magnetic field and laser therapy work well on these breaks, and the closer they can align the bones the quicker the callous / hyaline cartilage formation, and hence the healing process.

Obviously all the above is if the break isn’t to messy (ie loads of floating bits / shards etc) as can only speak from the experience of a reasonably clean break.

If you’re going larger than 1600 x XXXXX resolution would pay to check the Graphics card can handle this.

Vast majority of them will … but some of the older (esp when reliant on VGA) wont.

Monitor will still work at lower resolutions, but you lose the benefits of the higher DPI.

Ditto the dells as above. Use a variety from 24’s through to 30’s for photographic work, and never had an issue with them. Also recommend the Samsung syncmaster series.

Things to consider are based on intended use …

Colour accuracy out of the box – if your doing semi-critical colour work and do not calibrate yourself.

Response times – less “flicker” when watching moving images

Viewing angle – If you sit off centre, or have people around the screen mainly, but again for colour critical work you don’t want to be bobbing around in order to see the detail, or missing stuff when you slouch.

Colour space – SRGB fairly typical, anything over mid 90’s % for RGB is considered good, above RGB is useable in just about any situation.

Resolution – 1600’ish x whatever as a minimum above mid 20″ screens will ensure tight text and details.

Contrast / Brightness – at the lower end of the scale its fairly moot as manufactures tend to “plump” up their figures anyway. Contrast range more important if doing critical colour work or you watch a lot of Batman or similar “dark” films.

Connectors – HDMI fairly standard these days but good to have DVI-D and VGA as alternatives (which ever your PC / Laptop supports)

Peripherals – USB’s / Speakers = less clutter on the desk

Defo go and see Brian Simpson at the Physio Clinic in Ipswitch. Not only does the treatment work (for me at least) but he is a fountain of knowledge regards expectations and reassurances.

Get fitted for a cross brace, first job is to get the bones as aligned as possible so they can start knitting. Painfull as a kick in the man bits but worth it in the long run.

Do your exercises to make sure the joint doesn’t lock, wall finger climbs and hanging circles.

Apply as much Comfrey bone cream on as you can take, smells like an oil slick but again, age old remedy.

I was out (read propped up on a couch) for first few days, then two weeks doing nothing, then on the indoor trainer with my arm supported for three weeks, then on light rides for the next three. No problems since bar the occasional twinge when benching / deadlifting.

Mine was a medial break, 1 inch separation, done last Autumn. No shards so fairly straightforward.

If you do have to go to surgery, ask about the dual-trak screws, or similar. Less invasive, no secondary surgery and no surface abrasion issues.

Id avoid the foamy cleaners on light coloured carpets, as was explained to me after I had the carpets cleaned they tend to leave an oily residue, which then does a great job of trapping all the dirt and after a couple of months you end up with big dark patches.

Regards the OP … is it synthetic or wool carpet ?

White vinegar often does a great job as a general cleaner, but you do need to rinse it well which with wool carpet need to be cautious of, Whatever you do … try it in a not so obvious place (ie bottom of a cupboard etc) before you unleash it for real.

Id say they are doing it right, better to tell you so you can keep an eye on it, and if there are any issues they can rightly point out “we told you about that at the last service”

Assumption being made by them that if they dont point it out, and you discover the life ending scratch as you unpack the forks you will start a campaign of hate and vitriole on various websites telling the world how crap they are and quoting the Sale of Goods act, and bang on about their poor unfortunate cousin / brother / grandad who you go on to threaten.

Those official figures are about the same as mine (3 lt diesel XF) but I go get slightly higher than you in the real world, average on the iphone app is currently at 36.2, but I do 25 miles each way, through town onto 15 miles of the M1 (normally cruise set at 75mph) then through town again at the other end.

Around town dashboard tells me 32, on motorway low 40’s.

When I first got it it was much lower, although was assured that there is no longer a recognised “breaking in period” so was not put down to that. The dealer plugged it in at 5K and reloaded the mappings which picked up around 4 mpg from that point on. Could pay to check with dealer if they have similar issues?

Also add in a bit of “new car madness” which didnt help initially, I now tend to upshift earlier around town (when I can be bothered) which seems to help (premise being with such a low torque peak may as well stay at low revs).

Other thing that helped was going from a set of made of cheese Pirellis to dunlop sports, again added approx 2-3 on average.

And the above is not driving like a Nana the majority of the time.

Have a spank spike gathering dust on the shelf for the same reasons (i ended up going to a replacement CSU after exhausting all the options)

But the spike is zero rise and closer to 40mm than 50mm.

Other options, FSA do a 35mm stack stem OS-190 I think, Crank brothers do a very low stack height headset (but they don’t last) and NC-17 do a single bolt Slick Stick that works well with a Hope Head doctor but is pretty weighty (got one of them on the shelf gathering dust as well !).

Re AUS, i can only speak from what Friends / Family are experiencing at the minute as I’ve been in the UK for the past 5 years. But to all accounts everything is pretty much rosy!

Even family and friends in NZ, specifically Christchurch with all the recent events seem to be faring a lot better than over here.

I think a lot of it has to do with the nature of their economies / social policy, less reliance on the Big banks and credit as well as much tougher restrictions on population growths as well as a higher levels of natural resources (ie exports).

I’m certainly no economist so it might just be because God likes them (well … not the Aussies … no one likes them)

Avoid Raid, majority are controller based and a nightmare to recover (speaking from experience after losing both a Buffalo Terastation, and a Lynksys NAS enclosure). You really want a straight write through Drive enclosure preferably with e-sata connectivity.

I have a similar requirement within a commercial photographic environment and have used both Buffalo Duo drive’s and more recently an Edgestore 10 8 Bay array.

Using Smartsync Pro, I have a folder allocated on the Server whereby anything that is put into the folder is copied to the first of two archive drives. This is set to run on folder changes.

Each night at 2am a second job runs which copies the files off the same Server folder, to a second archive drive then when complete deletes the originals. I now have two copies of each file on two separate hard drives.

A weekly job then syncs both ways the two external drives with no deletions to ensure nothing gets missed and archives a copy to a 1TB cloud folder.

When full a list of all the files are taken using Printmeastro and added to a spreadsheet for reference with an allocated disk number, one disk is kept on site, one disk is kept at home and the cloud copy is deleted (the intention of the cloud copy is to act as a backup if anything happens to the Edgestore / premises)

Prior to the Edgestore used a Sharkoon Drive caddy so when files are required simply plug then into that, now have the most recent archive drives located within the edgestore.

If you’ve enough SATA connections (and cooling) this could be done internally on a PC, but its a faff to swap over and theres the risk of losing everything in one go …

And I wouldn’t go over 500GB in drive size to keep risks down, and write speeds up (found the 1TB disks incredibly slow by comparison … no idea why?)

As per the above advice, if an option look further afield? My SO is currently completing a research PhD before moving to Consultant level, and has had to fight tooth and nail the last 4 years to get through the NHS system and had to move all over the country for various posts (and she was on the previous allocated career path).

Prior to this she worked in both New Zealand and Australia and every month she will have something sent through from there literally begging her to return, and at much MUCH higher remuneration as well.

I think the nursing qualifications may be slightly different (NZ used to have a tiered degree / non degree training structure not sure about now though) so would need to look into how the qualifications cross over etc, but from what I understand there is certainly no shortage of positions in either country.

Think you’ve answered your own question there. Unfortunately its a a matter of replacing each link in the chain working until you find whats broken / discover the drive is fried !

When you power it on, can you hear a high pitched whining noise (hold drive to your ear) If not then its pointing towards the USB / Power board of the caddy.

If it is … does it appear in the Drive Utility when connected (would indicate a formatting / boot sector issue).

A handy tool for this sort of eventuality is a Sharkoon drive caddy, holds just about every type of portable media including SATA.

MTG, Im just over 6’2″ (190cm to be exact) and had a 19″ rockhopper and found it too cramped.

Went to a 21″ stumpjumper marathon and fit perfect (sold now). Also have the 21″ FSR and again, bang on for me with a 70mm stem.

Only downside is the extra length in the steerer cuts down the options on used forks (majority being to short) I had to resort to a new CSU on some existing ones.

Not those specifically but do have a pair of specialized tahoe for the casual rides (read pub).

Find them very comfortable, and stiff enough for their intended use on the bike, and the cleats are deep enough to not make to much of a racket when walking about.

I’ve yet to find anything that the kensington didn’t charge / run (obviously not space heaters / toasters !) I use it for a variety of camera a equipment, lighting gear and the laptop(s).

Other advantage being you can use it inflight, and will actually charge your battery (previously I used the magflight, which powered throughout but also drained the battery, so when you reached the destination you had a dead laptop !)

EDIT – It actually does away with the transformer / rectifier so suffers a lot less loss than typical inverters.

Clicking on image pop up window comes up … “http://lm.zeobit.com” something like “click to clean your mac” and a yes / no option. Virusbarrier popped up with a scan warning at same time.

Had heard of increase in steganography virus’ within jpegs and thought “uh-oh”.

The option to exit safari was disabled, and when I forced closed it virusbarrier came up with both threat and scan warnings.

I could be completely over reacting, but looking at the original poster they do seem fairly intent on putting the image file everywhere after registering today ?

I use a Kensington magsafe car charger on a regular basis, and if the phone needs charging use the USB sockets off the laptop. The kensington does come with an assortment of adaptors for other connections as well.

Would doubt it would have a huge impact on battery drain, but to make sure just turn the car over each day and leave it running for a bit ? Longest I’ve left it plugged in as around 4 hours to charge up portable flash units and car started fine afterwards. It does have a protection circuit whereby if the Car battery falls below a certain level it shuts off.

Ditto the scienceofficer. I’ve been nervous about them the whole time but used Crests on a Stumpjumper FSR without issue (80 – 83kg, mixture of peaks / cannock etc) for 3 months without a hitch. Running tubeless with X-king Racesports’s.

Put them on the SJ hard tail though and rode a regular trail from Whinstone Lee Tor down to the cut throat and tacoed the rear. Wasn’t doing anything different as far as I could tell. Ground whack straightened it enough to gingerly ride the rest of the way.

I’d had 819’s prior and never had an issue on either bike. Replaced the rim and still use them, as I do like the way they ride, but the 819’s now stay on the hard tail.

Is this a new build or an existing system ?

If new build, and it runs without BSOD under safe mode then its probably an incompatible driver / hardware.

If an existing system Id be starting with any recent updates / software instals etc, best work around to run a system restore to a point in time prior to the problems.

Then change auto updates to manual, and one at a time instal updates.

Brillaint, while you’re getting all your legal advice make sure you ask about fraudulent finance applications.

What your 20 year old brother is doing is purchasing an item on finance, whereby the said item remains the property of the finance company throughout the course of the agreement and immediately selling it to you. Bit of a no-no that one.

The finance company (who are actually responsible for the item now and it is the finance company who you should be contacting … get your legal team to look at the Consumer credit act for that bit) will be very interested in this, as well as any other information your brother may or may not have “stretched” in order to obtain finance.

And regards name and shame … I think the term for it is Slander.

I’m of to get my dose of rodgering …

inov-8 195’s do me for around 300 – 400 (4-5 months on average at present – on 2nd pair after replacing 190’s prior), but its the uppers that tend to go as my deformed toes wear through the thinner fabric. Majority of runs are soft surface through.

By contrast I also used to run on Kayano’s and would replace them every 6 months regardless of miles as they would tend to “lean” and lack stability as they aged (overkill perhaps but my knees where the ones doing the complaining).

I’ve stayed away from nike over past few years, generalisation I know but they always seemed to wear much faster then others while New Balance were indestructible.

Signal used to drop off at opposite corner of house, installing this at midpoint (actually in the kitchen mounted to the wall) and now have full range throughout the house, back yard and even into the garage. Even the neighbour sees a stronger signal of it than their own router (tin foil now wrapped around my man bits whenever I go near it)

Bit of a faff to set up (instructions are crud) so google forums for reference.

Hopefully the poor bloke will go to the finance company and complain, and the finance company will then start questioning why a third party application was done, and who is actually paying for the goods, and where they are located (assuming its not his brother).

One of the biggest no-no’s in retail finance at the minute which will come back to bite his brother (who cant even afford credit for his phone) firmly in the backside.

Credit to retailer, unlike the majority they stood up, took responsibility and rectified the situation even if the purchaser see’s it differently (and continue to do so by offering a full refund).

I’ll be adding JC Cycles to the list of retailers to look at next time Im looking for bits, I’d much prefer to support businesses who are doing their job well.

    Binners …

Just as a point of interest, the creditor who put themselves into insolvency, then pre-packed and re opened they didn’t happen to use the same or similar trading names did they ?

Had a very similar experience ourselves, with the director doing just that (which is perfectly legal with the intention of business salvage) BUT there are very strong phoenix laws under the Insolvency act which prohibits the use of any previous trading names etc. Abuse of this is a Criminal offence by the director resulting in full liability of all debts, as well as criminal charges including fines and imprisonment.

We bought that to the attention of the Director who had pocketed our possessions and lo and behold payments were made.

Also worth looking at your old sales contracts (assuming you have already) as to when ownership of the work done was passed to them. Normally this would be stipulated as being on receipt of payment, in which case you could look to re-posses the active website (or demand payment for same) Can you re-posses a website ????

Regards the economy, very similar boat to Binners, holding onto what was a solid business by the skin of our teeth, due mainly to cash-flow rather than turnover.

With credit being so tight amongst the business community what used to be produced on 30-90 terms now gets paid for upfront. Banks certainly are not interested in business investments, nor lending. To the contrary we lost our overdraft facility, and had to put down substantial deposits to retain streamline and retail finance.

Small firm loans have all but disappeared, and product development and innovation is going out the window.

The only reason we keep fighting on is the employees we have, who we care about a great deal. We have been able to weather the worst of it by selling off personal assets, and thankfully sublet a portion of our business premises.

Our Lease holder also came to the table with a significant reduction in rent in order to retain us which again, has got us through the worse of it. Collective arrangements such as this are to the benefit of all.

Unlike the RBS who forced one of our competitors into insolvency in order to obtain the premises that were held as debenture. Similar to us they withdrew their overdraft facility pushing them to the brink despite remaining profitable in trade. Not fans of them all.

The CBD around us would have over 50% vacancy rates, so a lot of business has already folded unfortunately.

Its certainly not a lost cause, and we have undergone extensive streamlining and cutbacks but I am confident that things will improve.
