It only appears to be locked to itself and not the bike stand. Do your colleague a favour and give him a quick lesson in bike security.

If the bike just fell onto the road and was not bumped / shoved / hit by the car I would say it will probably be fine. If there are no obvious impact signs on the frame then it is unlikely it has suffered any serious damage.

    Carbon is pretty tough stuff.

so if i just ate tons and tons of toms i could still gain weight?
even though they contain not a lot of fat.

This implies that you are not fully aware of the process through which the body stores fat. It is not only the consumption of fat which causes weight gain. Its complexity is beyond me but it is to do with the balance between energy consumed and energy expended. The energy could come from tomatoes, sugar, fat, energy gels, a protein shake or a balanced meal.

If it were me, I’d suggest a varied and balanced diet that offers you slightly less calories than you need each day. That way you will enjoy what you eat but the calorie deficit will help you lose weight over a long term and sustainable period.

I always wonder why, if the paleo diet was so good, what it was that made out ancestors stop eating it?
    Mr Kellogg.

Does this not make the name paleo rather misleading if we were still eating it up to 1900 or so?

According to Wikipedia it refers to the exclusion of grains and dairy products which were eaten long before Mr Kellogg came along.

I am not trying to be argumentative, but I think that although our ancestors may (or may not) have been healthy due to their diets being different and simpler, at some point they must have begun to broaden their diet. Presumably taste was one factor, anothers might be that they felt better / had more energy / were healthier / could feed more for the same effort / greater variety etc. They didn’t make this choice because of the marketing departments of food companies and there is long history of humans between the paleo period and the 1900s when Kellogg etc. began processing food when food was reasonably healthy and people did OK.

Basically, I can’t see beyond it being a fad.

“rider taking all kinds of risks”

“if you touch your brakes you will lose 30 positions”

“you have to stay at the front to avoid crashes” (they were left a little dumbstruck yesterday when a crash happened at the front)

I was amused in the prologue when Dave Zabriske was riding and they pointed out that he was vegan and then followed this up with ‘he doesn’t eat meat – or anything else for that matter’

You can copy files into the ‘new’ folder, it should then convert these next time you turn the unit on.

If you have a memory card in e.g. one with maps on it, there there will a ‘new’ folder on it as well as on the unit itself. IIRC you need to copy the file to the one on the unit.

Rema Tip Top in boxes of 100.

Cut up bits of inner tube seem to do the job in the parts of Africa that I have seen. You just have to be very vigorous with the sandpaper on it.

I hope you had a great meal and enjoyed your time together alone. Good luck in working it out.

I pretty much agree with the point of view that says kids won’t allow themselves to starve. However, I’d disagree with the suggestion that you leave your child staring at a plate of cold food until they give in and eat it. That seems like a sure fire way of making them dig their heels in and refusing to eat.

When mine were younger the response we took was along the lines of “I’m sorry that you don’t like this, you ate it last week. However, it is the meal we have prepared and it is all there is” at that point the plate was removed from in front of them and we carried on with our meal regardless.

This stopped it being a battle of wills and meant that they didn’t lose face. If they said later on that they were hungry, we politely offered to warm their dinner up and on many occasions they would accept it willingly.

Good luck – it can be a real pain. Just try to play it down and I am sure it will pass.

If you are going to go with the option of disposal at a council tip and it needs to be double wrapped then it is worth popping round a few carpet suppliers. I had some roof sheets to get rid of and the cost of buying plastic sheeting to double wrap it didn’t seem worth it. I went to a carpet supplier and they agreed to keep all the plastic that their carpets came in for me. It is nice and big and pretty tough stuff.

If the YHA is an option I’d suggest you go for it. You wouldn’t need to carry camping kit or cooking kit etc which will keep the total weight down.

If you want to camp en route then I’d suggest you spend time and money on getting your kit as light as possible and not worry too much about your bike. It will probably be easier to lose a few pounds from your kit than from your bike.

    You asked for a comparison:
Several years ago I did the Fred Whitton on a Specialized Stumpjumper with 1″ slicks on. The year after I did it on a £300 road bike. I was a similar level of fitness each year and was 25 mins quicker on the road bike.

I’d agree with all the other responses that a road bike is easier / quicker.

I’ve done a trailer on a solo off road and a trailer on a tandem off road. I think they are a fab way to carry lots of gear without too much hassle. I’d certainly agree with the comments on here so far.

I have a Yak BOB and I have used a little loop of string to connect the split pin thingies to the frame of the trailer. That way they can’t get lost when I remove them to take the trailer off.

I’d also suggest cobbling together an extended rear mudguard. Any muck, dirt, water goes directly off the rear wheel and onto the trailer. Even if your kit is properly waterproofed, it is not nice to have to deal with bags that are covered in grime. If you can bear the bodge, then half a 1.5 litre pop bottle mounted vertically in the yoke of the trailer works well.

Use a metal ruller. Much more accurate. Then change the cain if it is 1% stretched, or 3mm over the 12″ mark.

Only in Britain would we have mm and inches being needed to make one decision 🙂

I usually get a few rogue readings that are very high at the start of rides. I think it is because it takes a while to start sweating and establish a strong connection with the HRM strap. Also, if you wear synthetic clothes they can build up a static charge which can confuse the HRM strap and cause over readings.

It can sometimes be to do with the valve not being seated in the tyre properly meaning that the bead of the tyre cannot sit against the rim.

When you reassemble with new bits pump up to a few psi then push the valve up into the tyre to make sure that the beads of the tyre are below the bulge caused by the valve. Then inflate to full pressure. Only then tighten up the lock ring (if you use them).

Also double check that none of the tube is being pinched by the tyre.

It has only happened to me once or twice so hopefully a new tyre and tube will fix the problem.

I haven’t yet found any that are long enough. I tend to buy bib tights and just treat them like slightly long 3/4s.

My main priority was getting the 1:50 OS mapping. It is much cheaper to buy it in the bundle than to purchase it afterwards (£50 extra as opposed to £200 afterwards iirc) and I wasn’t interested in cadence sensor which is what influenced my purchasing decision. (I did want HRM so got myself a second hand ANT+ HRM strap for about £30)

I have played around with OSM maps out of interest and quite like them as they are less ‘busy’ than the OS maps.

I can’t see a clear cut answer to your question about which to buy! Either approach would be fine. Just out of interest, OSM maps are open source so there is no need to buy them, you can download them for free perfectly legitimately.

Just to give you more things to ponder: If you are only following pre planned routes then the Edge 500 allows you to upload a route and gives an arrow display when a turn is approaching (it cannot display maps). If you want on screen maps then you could get a Etrex 30 for less than an Edge800 and load it with OSM maps. (the main difference between an Edge800 and the Etrex is that the Edge is bike specific, a bit smaller and has various functions that mean it is good as a training tool)

It zooms in and out automatically as you move along roads so it is pretty easy to see where you are on an OS map when on road. If you are following a route or are navigating to a location you can set it to beep at you just before the junction and display a schematic diagram of the junction indicating which way you will need to turn. You can also enable / disable any of the maps that are installed.

Alternatively you could buy the performance bundle and download an Open Street Map of the UK. There are some very good ones that have contours, bridleways etc on. They even have some advantages as the bridleways on OSM are often ‘routable’ whereas the OS ones are generally not.

I have to say that I agree with Crikey.

It does make life easier if posters put “Spoiler” in the thread title but if you really don’t want to find out the result then you should self impose a media blackout.

My understanding is that the performance and navigation bundle contains HRM and Cadence monitors and has road maps (the navigation part), whilst the other bundle contains an SD card with the 1:50 OS maps but does not have the HRM / Cadence sensors.

If you want offroad mapping I think you will need the 1:50 OS bundle. You can buy ANT+ HRM and cadence sensors separately if you want / need them.

Am I missing something here? I thought weight gain was related to how many calories are consumed over what is needed to stay at your current weight?

If you are active and move around a lot during the day / spend a lot of time on your feet then you will need more calories than someone who spends a lot of time sitting but isn’t the key factor in weight gain to do with how many calories more than this you consume?

I can’t help but think there is a bit of a confirmation bias at work here. Are these observations based on actual samples or what people happen to notice? Do they notice what they want to notice?

e.g. When I was in London recently I thought I saw more Boris bikes than anything else, but that was because I was riding one. However, an earlier poster didn’t include them in their list of London bike types.

My MA tutor advises that there is no requirement for quantity in a lit review. He advocates that you can easily do a lit review of one or two key texts as this gives you space to really go into depth on them.

However, it might just be one of his quirks and you may find the person doing your assessment might be looking for more sources.
