  • Bomb disposal experts were called to a suspicious package outside Downing Street today.
On opening, it was found to contain fish.
The Surreal IRA have claimed responsibility.

We're talking about wiring here, not PCBs.
I have occasionally seen a bunch of wires soldered together within a loom, usually all the earth wires, but never soldered terminals.
Non insulated crimps are standard practice throughout the motor manufacturing industry, although for some reason, the LPGA insist on soldered connections for LPG conversions.

That's brilliant – worth waiting for.

Quick edit – Oops – tis Muddypuddle not MTG!

I was in the supermarket yesterday when the guy in front of me had a heart attack and dropped down dead.
I felt a bit sorry for him, he'd just bought a Bag For Life.

Never use scotchlocks on a vehicle.
The steel blade part will corrode where it meets the copper wires. They won't last the first winter.
Twisting the wires together and wrapping them in PVC tape would be more reliable.

What's the biggest drop off on your commute ?

I've just got back from a couple of weeks camping down in that part of Dorset

    Get back to your tenement.

Threads like this always make me wonder who is actually fast and who just thinks they are? And does it really matter anyway?

    It matters.

This idea of seeing another cyclist in front and not trying to catch them up and overtake.
Can someone explain it to me please ?

    £400 ?
    The bare hub's about £150 isn't it ?
A disc, sprocket, rim & spokes doesn't add up to another £250.

Don't know, but I've run a Rohloff in both a horizontal dropout and EBB Chameleon OK.
    Which Chameleon is it ?
With the horizontal dropout version the wheel moves in relation to the caliper mounts as you adjust the chain. You might, possibly, find you need a half link chain to get the disc lined up with the pads just right.
The EBB version avoids the problem.

    So, none then. :(

    I don't know.
I was just trying to remember how many posted on the "Who's going to MM thread" without bothering to search for it. :?

The problem is that human dietary needs are quite complex, while humans themselves are frequently quite dull.
All foods therefore have to be classified as "good for you" or "bad for you".
To avoid confusing people by trying to explain that most foods are neither exclusively good or bad if eaten in the right quantity, they are occasionally swapped from one category to the other.
This means that people will alternately gorge on or avoid the food, ensuring a long term ideal average intake.

Without getting in to discussion about the exact interpretation of a word, I'd say you have to be fairly serious about mountain biking to take part in a 24 hour race.
2500 or so riders at Mountain Mayhem.
    How many STWers there ? 50 ? 100 ?
That makes 1:50 to 1:25 as a very rough guess.

    Thanks nbt and Handsomedog.

On my way to winning the over 95kg category. :P

nbt, was it you I spoke to just after crashing on the first muddy descent on my second lap at about 11:50am ?
I saw someone take a picture of me as I went down and asked them to post it on STW. He asked me if I was the Chunky Challenge guy.
    Was that you ?

    I don't get it though.
Does everything on youtube get duplicated on indiaeveryday ?
    If not, why me ?
I could understand it if they took some of my videos and put them in a mountain bike or vintage truck section, but they've simply got all of them listed under my name.

Maybe I'm a cult hero in India without knowing it. A bit like those Pacific islanders who worship Prince Philip. 8)

11th picture down, guy with the water bottle by the stripy windbreak, that's me, that is. 8)

I believe you got an interesting one of me on the first muddy downhill section, nbt, as I cra… I mean made an unscheduled dismount. :D

Riding mountain bikes through farmland. 8O
    The very idea.

Thew widely held belief, whether it's right or wrong, is that carbon components snap suddenly without warning, while metal ones bend first.
I have an irrational fear of my carbon fork legs both snapping at once and sending me over the 'bars.
I found it reassuring that in both cases it was a metal component that partially failed by cracking or bending and the rider was able to stop under control.

100kg on Nuke Proof 29er rigids. Not broken them yet.
There was another thread on carbon forks recently.
    http://www.singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/how-sturdy-are-rigid-carbon-forks
Only two examples of broken carbon forks on that thread and both failed at a metal component, which I found reassuring.

I'm packed and ready to go.
Off to work in a minute, then pick up Mrs militant after work and a leisurely cruise up the M6 in the 110.

I see no one has taken up the Chunky Challenge.

My claim to be the world's fastest fattest mountain bike racer remains undisputed. 8)

Yes, I know that. Do they ?

    "…revised Catholic laws…"

So what happened ? Did their infallible god change his mind ?

£16 million to build a few trail centres 8O
How much does a truck load of stone and a week's hire of a mini digger cost ?
I'd expect both ends of Offa's Dyke joined up by a full length coastal path for that money.

I ran a QR Rohloff in a horizontal dropout Chameleon, despite Rohloff recommending using the nutted version.
Some QRs were 100% reliable, some slipped at the first hill. I later progressed to an EBB, then a sliding dropout frame and can't now remember which were the good QRs.
If by Bolt Up, you mean the skewers with a socket cap head that are actually a very long thin bolt, I found them 100% reliable.
    Never tried chain tugs.

We're going to have to go back on a cloudy day, the sign's a bit overexposed and hard to read.

"Bridleway follows stream bed" if you can't make it out. :D

I can't see what all the fuss is about.
When I looked at those photos, my only criticism was that it's going to be a bit noisy that near the motorway.
Looks like a good mix of bits that are fun to ride and bits where it's possible to overtake. You can't have it both ways all the way round.

Back to the original topic and a thread on tubeless tyres was bound to throw up a gem…

Running kevlar beaded tyres makes the tyre less sturdy in hard cornering and more likely to come off is you get landing squint etc.

What, a clue as to why people are posting pictures of women who have got film and TV contracts, personal stylists, agents, publicists and their own fan websites as "underrated" ?
No, I still don't get it.

There's too many variables in mountain biking to give an exact figure.
I'm sure it would be possible to set up a test rig to measure oxygen consumption and power output at set speeds and cadences with different gear ratios to calculate the exact benefit of having a choice of gears, but I don't know how accurately the results would translate across to a real mountain bike race.

    I still don't get this thread. :?
Oh well, while you're all looking at pictures on the internet of women you will probably never meet and who possibly can't even ride a bike, I'm off out exploring the local bridleways with the top veteran solo female rider at this year's Set2Rise 12 hour and Bristol Bike Fest 6 hour marathons. :P
    Enjoy your wood.

    I'll be there.
If you see a big fat beardy bloke on a Rohloff 29er, wearing Vegan cyclists kit, say hello.

For those few who understand that "underrated" means having achieved something a bit more significant than getting a job reading a script in front of a camera, I present the youngest woman to run 100 marathons and world record holder for running ten marathons in ten days, Anna Finn.

I've seen screen shots of Garmin's topo maps and they look dismal.
I use memory map on a £100 refurbished Mio P350.
Not just a ten digit grid reference, but a scrolling 1:25000 OS map.

    Two options.

Look at the results of any 12 or 24 hour race with a seperate singlespeed class.
How many laps did the overall winner do ?
How many laps did the SS winner do ?
    That's the difference.

    #2
Hire a bike with gears and suspension.
Time a lap of a test route on your bike.
Time a lap on the hire bike.
    That's the difference.

I've been looking on the Tesco and O2 sites and I'm still confused.
Nokia X6 with satnav and 5Mp camera with 100 minutes for £20 a month for 18 months from O2 looks OK.
I know this is probably a dull question, but if there's no keypad and it's a touch screen, does that mean the keypad is on the screen like a PDA ? It doesn't slide out from behind or something like that ?

There's an O2 shop in town. I'll call in and see if they can give me a demo.
There's at least three phone shops in town all together. They've always got special offer signs in the window. Are they worth looking at or will I always get a better deal on the web ?

That sign in the bakers window says "All our sandwiches are freshly made to order", yet the picture shows a roll, not a sandwich. :?:

    Previously 115mm, currently 0mm, on a 29er, of course.
Could do with something in between.
