  • I enjoy a good argument.

    No you don't.

It's good, but it would be better if there weren't so many people who are wrong on so many subjects.
I simply haven't got time to correct them all.

Only problem, everyone who signed up for 100k but did 60k or cut the course short ( some did accidently ) have their times listed in the 100k results

I noticed a woman sat on a chair just before a junction taking rider's numbers as they passed.
I can't remember now where she was, but I assumed she was on the long course checking who actually did it.
Was that the case and were the results corrected to take her records in to account ?

A bit of a guide I wrote on my training log. Scroll down for the relevant bit.

    My trailquesting map board.

A plastic chopping board held on with cable ties.

I always read any thread that's been locked to see what it was all about.

    I eat fruit jellies.
Easier to eat if you carry the open packet in a pocket or frame bag and a smaller dose of sugar per hit.

Try trailquesting (did I mention I ride trailquests ?).
It's not for everyone, there's no coloured arrows to tell you which way to turn out of the car park and warn you how big the bumps are, so it would be a bit daunting for most trail centre riders.

Get an OS map of your local area.
You don't have to go the Peaks or Snowdon, there's probably a good selection of bridleways within a few miles of where you live.

I've got mine mounted vertically, but then a Land Rover probably shakes up and down as much on a normal road as a rally car shakes backwards and forwards when it's racing.

    2 cyclists = race

    It really is that simple.

    …listen for the fffffuuuuurrrumph1 noise…

Isn't there still a chance that the pressure has leaked away though, so even if it's full of powder, it won't come out ?

I've got the ones with the little pressure gauge on top.
As long as it stays in the green, I assume it will work when needed.

stevestunts, that does sound like a strange thing to happen.
When you say you popped round, I take it you visit fairly frequently ?
Next time, try and leave them alone again. No doubt the conversation will turn to babies again and Mrs stunts will have the opportunity to ask for further details if you can prime her with some questions.

    138th/283 for me.
    I don't know about 100mph, but I hit 73.5km/h at one point. 8)

Proof that I did the full 103km.

Thanks again for all the help.
I've ordered the Hope +20mm adapter. I've just got to wait for it and the forks to turn up and I'll see if it all matches up with my calipers.

With so many different manufacturers and standards, it's a shame there isn't a definitive list somewhere of what fits what. Even Sheldon Brown wasn't much help in this case.

Lunge, I can't be bothered to go back and find the links from all the websites I have looked at over the past few hours trying to sort this out, but I am sure I saw them listed both ways.
An "IS to PM" adapter could mean either IS caliper to PM forks or PM caliper to IS forks. Best to find one with a picture to make sure it's what you want.

They are included in the rebuild kit.

Pain is temporary. Failure is forever.

Some pm forks are set up for 180 rotors as standard…

Does that mean that most are not ?

Looking again at the list of Hope post to post adapters, they do a 180mm and a 203mm adapter, but not a 160mm adapter, which suggests that 160mm is the default size.

my Magura IS calipers are 160mm

    Now I'm even more confused.
I've mixed Hope and Magura with Fox and Rock Shox. All IS and all 180mm.

I just realised that after finding the Hope adapter on CRC, I searched for "IS to Post", which is why I didn't find the "IS to PM" BA ones. 🙄

    Thanks docrobster.
    I don't know how I missed that.
I looked on CRC and couldn't find what I wanted, now I can see 160mm and 203mm adapters as well as the one I want. 😕

Are you sure 160mm is the "standard" for front discs ?
An IS caliper on an IS fork, with no adapter, fits a 180mm disc.
I assumed it would be the same for post mount.
It doesn't help when Hope simply describe it as "+ 20mm" without saying what the default measurement is.

Thanks for all the helpful advice everyone.
I won the auction. My first time using Hammersnipe, it seems to work. 😉
Once I've got them and sorted out an IS to post adapter, I'll see how I get on with the lockout threshold adjuster.
I really don't like the way suspension forks bob when pedalling up hill, but I want them to work on the way down, without having to manually turn a knob every time.

The original topic of this thread is coming up as bandwidth exceeded, but never mind, it was worth it for that Heavens Above link.
Thanks, j_me, I've saved that to my favourites and I'll be going back to it after dark.

What's all this about Land Rovers being unreliable ?
My 110's done 300 000 km in 20 years and been towed home once due to a failed petrol pump. And that's only because I ran out of LPG.

On the short steep climb to the gap

Are you sure you took the right route ?
I felt like I was pushing for half an hour up there. 🙂

    …large chain store…

    Leisure Lakes ?

They are as described "FOX 32 F29 RLC FIT DISC"

Yes, in the heading, but then in the description it says…

REBOUND & ADJUSTMENTS: 100MM TRAVEL, AIR SPRUNG PRESSURE, LEVER ACTUATED LOCKOUT, REBOUND ADJUST, LOW SPEED COMPRESSION, TERRALOGIC THRESHOLD

I've got a set of 26" Terralogics and I like them, that's why I want some for my 29er now.

    I'm still confused though.
    As I understand it (in simplified layman's terms);

Terralogic forks act as rigid until they hit a 4" bump. This activates the inertia valve. They will then continue to react to all bumps until they have been inactive for 10 seconds, when they will revert to rigid.

Threshold lockout forks act as rigid until they hit a 4" bump. They then revert to rigid until they hit another 4" bump. Adjusting the threshold can make them react to a 3" or 2" bump, but they will always be rigid over smaller bumps.

Have I got that right ? If so, which are the ones I linked to above ?

Thanks for the quote, foxyrider. I couldn't open the pdf on Mrs MTG's computer to read it.
So it looks like they've got an adjustable lock out threshold for the Terralogic and a simple on off full lock out knob to override it.

Bottom line then, yes, they are Terralogic ?

Officially, cycling is only allowed on the (poorly signposted) bridleways, Sustrans Route 45 and the family cycle routes.
Unofficially, both the Forestry Commision and Natural England seem to tolerate cyclists riding in other areas, or at least accept that there is not much they can do about it. Having met with both of them recently, it's people making new trails that they object to, not that I'm aware of any new trails being made recently.

Like most outdoor public attractions, most people never stray far from the car park or waymarked trails.
If you go off in the remoter areas exploring, you're unlikely to meet anyone on foot to complain.

    These are the ones.

Red knob on the bottom right ? Is that right for Terralogic ?

…and the organisers clear it up before leaving

Why should they have to though ?
If Glastonbury Festival adds £5 on the price of a ticket to cover the cost of a dedicated litter picking team after everyone has gone home, fair enough.
A small scale event that relies on volunteers and raises money for local charities shouldn't have to spend money on it or ask volunteers to do it for nothing.

    OK, thanks.
I thought it was blue on the top left for travel adjust, red inner on the top right for damping and blue outer on the top right for lock out.
With Terralogic there's no need for a lockout, so I thought it was just the red on its own on the right.

10 mins to fix a puncture, are you doing it blind fold?

I was trying to be generous. If i only saw the punctures that happened up to 5 minutes ahead of me, that makes it twice as bad.

I should have made it clear from the start that I run ghetto tubeless and it's the latex that I think makes the difference for both pinch flats and thorns.

I live in Worcestershire where there's very few rocks poking through the surface and those that do are nice soft round sandstone.
For somewhere like the Brecon Beacons, tubeless is essential.

    Upside down forks.
Common on motorcycles now, so why are they so rare on bicycles ?

    Hub gears.
If they could be made light, cheap and efficient they would take over from derailleurs.

    My route from yesterday.
    http://connect.garmin.com/activity/48814572
    103km in 6:52.
I got to the first feed station and the guy running it said "The leaders went through about an hour ago" 😯

    Line dancing.

It was only invented to give Morris Dancers someone to laugh at.

    Thousand points of light.

… giving both radial and lateral support

Don't all wheel bearings do that then ?

And shouldn't it be radial and axial support ?

There are only three syllables in Worcestershire.

For a fast time, I recon a cyclocross bike is the best thing for it

I reckon I'll do it on my fully rigid 29er then if it's not as unsuitable as I first thought.

I can't remember which distance I signed up for.
Is the split near the end of the 71km route ?
Can you choose when you get to the split ?

Yes, 29" is genuinely better than 26"
It's not just a fad like singlespeeding.

Women never forgive. They store everything away for future use.

One day, many years from now, I'll be in trouble for something I've done/not done or said/not said and she'll say "..and there was that time I got lost and you were more worried about your bike than about me…"
