I’ve applied to white water already! :-) . A few weeks ago though and never heard back from them, along with about 20 other ski areas.

Interesting Tom, I’m heading out on Oct 12th! I thought finding jobs there would be easier. What kind of jobs are you after? I’m a trained ski tech and boot fitter, I thought it wouldn’t be too hard to find work in any rental or retail store.
Also I’m a ski instructor, thought there would be a few jobs going for that?!

    Thanks deserter .

Thing is I’m not sure yet what city I should fly into, out of Calgary and Vancouver. Which city and surrounding are (ski resorts) would be best for finding a job on the spot do you know?

People have suggested I stay flying into Calgary and driving to Van. Don’t have a full driving licence though… hopefully I’ll get the test done before I leave!

I like the blanket of cloud around the mountains in that Morzine shot!

The big mountain shot of Banff is really cool as well.

Haha well it’s not the worst place to be waiting for a train anyway, nice place. I’ve only been there once when i was staying at Interlaken, skiing in Wengen.
Had to drop off my hire ski’s somewhere up the mountain at the end of the week :-) .

    Nice!

I think my train station shot is Grindelwald, have’nt heard of the other place anyway!.

Thanks for the reply’s people. That drive sounds good but I don’t have a full driving licence at the moment! Still learning. Does anyone know if i can do my driving test over in Canada when not being a Canadian citizen and on a visa?
Also would there be a good train or bus route from Calgary over to Van that would be worth doing?

Still got my Flight booked for Calgary, more ski resorts seem to be around Vancouver though.

He’s swam the channel before I think. In the little britain live australia tour he did some big sea swimming race and did quite well.

I went to Les Deux Alps when i was about 16 with the family and bloody loved it!

Cool town, met some cool people in the hotel we were in.

More of a soft weather tyre I think. I’d reach for maxxis ignitors over them for all round use.

And the sidewalls are pretty bad on Schwalbe tyres, i keep mine for racing really.

To me it looks like there’s V-brakes with a disc rotor sitting there :?

I’d go back to when the bicycle was newly invented around the time of the penny farthing and show everyone my sweet ride :-) .

Ye for that type of riding I’d definately steer towards a 26″. Also I wouldn’t go too high on travel if switching from a hardtail, it feels very weird changing over. Riding here is a lot different to the helps remember, rarely the same speed and knarlyness.

With that budget I’d look at a Santa Cruz Heckler maybe..

Yes ridden it once and absolutely love it. Had a 100mm full sus which coped nicely. Just attack every downhill section, some of them are slightly “all or nothing” so if you don’t go for it, you don’t get a nice feel riding it.

Get a Hope Ceramic one and never look back :-) .

It probably pays for itself with the amount of times you’d have to change a cheap bottom bracket in its lifetime.

Fair play to the driver for making it that far, takes some skill I’d say.

    LOL!!!

It’s a complete dump but we’re not planning on staying here for more than 5 years. That’s the length of time that we have to keep it until we can coin in. Might even sublet it at some point. I don’t see the point in decorating it or cleaning it for that matter. I am very attractive with make up on

Okay I’ll have Lindsey Vonn, you two can have Mancuso and Alcott :D

Actually I’ll take Lara Gutt, I change my mind :-) .

Sounds about right, the majority of my pads went in the first 30 – 40 miles of the race. I started at the back so there was a lot of traffic to contend with.

True. I got caught behind someone two years ago who was hugging their brakes the whole way down one of the long twisty descents, so i had to slow down to save ramming into the back of him. That’ll wear down your pads!
There are some terrible brake huggers out there. Conditions make a big difference though obviously.

To all the people going through so many brake pads and wearing them out after 13 miles etc, i have two theorys. Either you’re using cheap seven quid jobbies, or just braking far too much.
I’ve done it the past few years on one set of pads, and a lot of life left in my other components.. apart from the cables maybe.

How did the route compare to the last two years anyway?

    michaelmcc
    Free Member

The course was actually shorter this year, I made it 99.6 miles which makes comparisons tricky,

Yeah it was about 103 or 4 miles the past two times i did it. Would have liked to see Crampton there.

I’ve just finished checking my bike to see what work needs doing.

New jockey wheels – no teeth on any of them
    new cables
    new pads
    brake overhall including new pistons*
    New rotors*
    new chainrings
    new chain
    new casette
new bearings for hope rear hub

    so expensive race

What the hell?? Really? You must have started it on a slightly battered bike to make it in that state?? Unless all your gear wasn’t set up properly maybe.

I’ve managed to go the whole day without knowing so i can try and watch it some other time, i’ve even been avoiding the bike forum and my facebook home page so i don’t find out… WHY the bloody hell do you have to post this in the “CHAT” forum????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

The assumption on this thread seems to be that off-piste means powder or soft snow. Over a typical winter that’s far from the case. You’re as likely to find glassy, hard conditions as fresh powder and hard crusted snow is common. On steep ice a 20-year-old pair of almost parallel Yetis will beat any modern parabolic ski for avoiding terminal velocity.

You forgot to mention the death cookies! 8O :-)

True out of all weeks I’ve been skiing I’ve had very few powder days, i can probably cound those on one hand. Most of the time its icey, cruddy and just generally cut up from everyone elses tracks. Still beats skiing on piste for me though! I only like on piste if its quiet really.

Lack of gravity and oxygen would make it pretty grim. Wouldn’t be much fun going downhill on a bike anyway!

Cheers. I’ve booked my flight for Calgary, but I’m feeling like i should change it to Vancouver. Everyone I’ve spoken to says you need to go to Whistler!

Def gonna try see an ice hockey game, I guess the flames and the canucks are the two teams I’m most likely to see :-) .

Yeah starting to get back on the bike, just random spins as base miles though i suppose, not really “training” properly yet.

I agree with Edukator about waxing and servicing OP, you need to be sure the shop you go to uses hot wax if you want a good service. If you look really naieve and don’t know what you’re talking about they’ll probably just run them through the machine. The wax from machines comes off in a couple of runs btw, most people i know carry around their own pocket wax now to top up on the slopes.

Most people taking out rental ski’s probably won’t notice or care. Ive never taught some one who’s complained about unwaxed or blunt ski’s.

    michaelmcc

Find me a rental company that does all that and I’ll take an interest in rental skis.

Some rental places have 1000’s of skis to service in twenty four hours. If they gave them that much attention they would never all get done!

Most people don’t know about edge angles either.

Only 177 finishers compared to 350 last year!

Looked like a stronger field up the front too.

Salomon race skis are great, but other stuff in their range imo is over hyped junk compared to what else you can get

We’ll have to agree to disagree on that. I’ve known a few good skiers that use salomon, mates not pros.

There race ski’s are very good though.

Or better again buy a board and really enjoy the time off piste.

Why have one snowboard under your feet when you can have two :D

    michaelmcc
    Free Member

If you’re going more on piste than off, then the width under foot is important. Generally 85mm and over is considered more of an off piste ski (some people say 90mm and over), although a lot of them can perform well on piste too.
You probably want to look at a waist of about 72-79 mm.

If you are going to a big resort then maybe buy them out there.

I keep coming back to the Dynastar Sultan 85.

Yes the best ski’s ever used to date! Had them for a week in La Plagne.

It’s like asking – what tyre?

So so true. It really depends on your skiing style, agressiveness, how much off piste you really do, if you like a long turning radius or not. The ski companys that i think are really on top of their game though are salamon, obvious reasons. Theyve been tweaking their all mountain ski’s for the past few years making them better and better. It was the scream, then the X-wing, not sure what it’s called at the mo.

Volkl and Dynastar would be my other favourites, the volkl Unlimited range are a really nice all round ski geared more towards piste than off, they handle crud and powder good enough though (theyve changed the name of them this year though).

Movement make really nice ski’s aswell, theyre swiss and they know there sh!t.

Btw, i hope you already have your own ski boots if you’re buying ski’s, a must to improve your technique, more important than having your own ski’s for sure.
