Like with all these threads I’m gonna recommend Retallack, featuring and by Tanner Hall.

Also Eye Trip is one of my favs too! Haven’t seen any of this years vids, apart from the trailers.

And then, next year, it’ll be, “What skis for a one year old?” from me!

    Careful now…

Actually that small niner doesn’t look as odd as others Ive seen, maybe cuz of the small head tube, it looks more in proportion.

I think size small 29ers just look really naff, lol.

Intense! I wouldn’t fancy it myself. Is that the same course as the other vid that was knocking about a while ago with the dog running out at one stage? The jumps down the bottom section look very similar anyway.

Ive done a few solo 24’s but don’t quite see the appeal to this. Am I missing something? 8O

I guess time will tell how good they REALLY are, how durable the stitching is etc.

Ye will do gregg, cheers! I’m bad enough at making decisions as it is though, don’t need to make it harder for myself by having a bigger choice lol.

I’d like more opinions on any of these I’ve mentioned if anyone else knows!

it’s only for your speed test for your BASI 4 that you really need to worry! Haha!

A long way away from me I think! :| . I take it crispo you’ve been through all this malarky? Does remember dimensions for the skis you had?

And I haven’t seen or heard of a discount on Head skis, and the I Tatan and Magnum are lovely! I only did a few laps of them in Xcscape but still felt really nice.

What you need to ask yourself is what you want to/are going to use them for? What type of skiing will you be doing on them?

Bit of a tricky one haha, they’re for the BASI level 3 so the technical side involves carving and short turns on piste, as well as bumps, steeps, and variables. Would be nice to be allowed switch skis for different days and terrain but we aint allowed I’m pretty sure!!!

If I remember from the other thread you have off piste skis already so don’t worry particularly about how they cope with deep snow or crud.

True a have a set of Line Prophet 98’s lovely all mountain ski! :-)

You can also get BASI deal for Dynastar/Lange I think.

Yeah but they’re still out of my budget even with the discount!! :(

    horribly biased MTB mags

I know the one  .

Yeah I agree the Rossis do look pretty bad, still bearable though, not over whelmingly bad!! But as I said the 18m turn radius could be an issue.
The only prob with Sallys is the price, as they don’t come with bindings. Could pick up a pair of STH 12’s for cheap enough though.

Blackeyes are bit wide for what I want.

I actually quite like those graphics! :P

Although Nordica aren’t in the BASI pro deal which puts a slight spanner in the works. Rossi Salomon and Atomic are my main options.

Ye I was thinking 166 would struggle a bit in steeps/variables with the lack of float. Nice on moguls though, which is my week point! :-)

Hey I’m 5″8″ and 68kg, so similar to you! I suppose 175 is just longer then what I’m used to for a piste ski, so maybe saying it’s too long isn’t right. And yes carving on piste and short turns. I love my Line Prophets but they certainly aren’t the right tools for the job lol.

blood sugar and fat in us for 2-3 hrs steady riding

Maybe but can’t be very good for you if you’re going into you reserves day after day.

I watched the trailer and wasn’t bothered on it at all?

Savage looking front flip in it mind.

Sounds crazy to me not taking in any calories on your rides (apart from the 50 plus mile ones). Be patient. Drink some kind of sports drink on your rides (and maybe mixed with some other fuel source like gels or food) so you’re at least getting about 150 cals an hour. The excess weight will eventually come off and you’ll have more energy on your rides too. A bit like trying to drive a car with no petrol, it aint gonna happen.

    yes 177cm tall

I imagine the 172’s would be on the small side for you then. All down to personal tastes and your skiing ability. I’d go for the shorter ones if you like skiing in trees, the longer ones if you prefer big open stuff.

So as 77kg, 177cm “advanced” skier (stop laughing please) I am assuming 172 / 178 are the length choices ? I ask as @michaelmcc says there appear to be a few pairs of discounted 2011/12 Phrophets about.

@Jam – Are you saying you are 177cm high, or that you like skis that tall? I’m about 5’8″ and have the 172’s. I weigh about 65-70 kg depending on the time of year!
I didn’t test ride them at all before buying but I knew they were the right ski for me after my first time out on them! It is very easy to like them. Before getting these I’d usually ski a 165-170 rental ski. They don’t have a lot of rocker so if they had a lot more then I would have got one size taller for sure.

One other ski I’d do some google research on if I were you are Line Sir Frances Bacons. Could prob find last years model for cheap too! 10mm wider than the Prophets, so slightly more of a powder ski.

As above, I’ve been using it for a few years and love it! Can’t see any major reason to fault it at all. Uploading your diet/nutrition is a bit of a faff and not very user friendly, so I didn’t do that for long. But really good site overall.

Thanks – what width are your Prophets ?

98mm underfoot, they’re last winters skis, 2011-12, could probably pick them up for cheap now. This years ones have horrible graphics IMO. I wouldn’t go any narrower than around 100mm ish underfoot for free-skiing.

What are recommended / hot All Mountian skis this year ?

    Can open, worms everywhere!

    Currently inspecting can of worms…

It depends on what your idea of all mountain is and how much off piste/slack country you do?!!

My choices would be the Line Prophets (which I’m biased to as I own them). Other allmountain-ish skis that seem to be popular are the Salomon Shoguns, and the Rossignol S3’s.

I picked up a new pair of Atomic slalom skis from the shop yesterday. It says ‘rocker’ on them, the first time I’ve seen it on full-on race skis.

Just stand the skis up base to base and look down them. Nearly every company is throwing around the rocker word at the moment. K2 are a good example with their jib rocker, speed rocker, and powder rocker. I think it confuses people, but I highly doubt a pair of slalom skis have anything like the amount of rocker on powder skis! :-)

Don’t think I’ll bother watching any of the grand tours anymore (apart from maybe a few mins of highlights now and again). I think the sport could be in slight danger with a few big sponsors pulling out.

I find I progress better when put in a challenging situation

True, so long as you don’t start picking up shoddy habits in the name of survival! We all get sloppy at times, but I like to keep myself in check with the odd lesson.

On another note, a friend had a lucky escape in Sauze a few years back, waiting for the ski bus up to the lifts, not paying attention, caught a wing mirror on the back of the helmet! Was fine, if a little dazed!

CFH – Can you explain that a little more? . I’m guessing some vehicle with a high wing mirror clotted him on the head while he was waiting? :-

And yes the risk of other numpties crashing into me is a big reason I wear a helmet. I actually find the last run of the day heading down to the village the most dangerous, less than desirable porridge snow conditions and loads of tired sketchy looking people about.

So… Who else wears a helmet? Slightly dull talk I know, but I wear one everywhere now on the basis of if I wear one for biking then why not for skiing.

And looks like its very good news about all the snowfall so far! Hopefully it hasn’t peaked too early lol.

    were you expecting more?

Slightly, haha. How long will I have to wait before they’re worth anything?
