Could you define “excessively powerful” again, just to remind us what YOU consider to be acceptable?

1bhp more than my car, obviously.

N+1 Exactly the correct answer, I going with that too.

So, to put it another way – why buy a car that does 20mpg when you can’t get the benefit? You know there’s only so much petrol, don’t you?

Because you get the benefit of being somehwere much nicer than your 3 cyl Clio.

Just like riding your (insert nice mtb bike here) is so much nicer than riding a ASDA BSO.

Driving on the other hand is practised by pretty much everyone whether they like it or not and so inevitably some people are entirely clueless of the dangers involved. Particularly since modern Euroboxes are quite refined and remote from the world outside.

Like the person I heard complaining that he had an accident in his car because the (normal non active) cruise control hadn’t braked for him. Aparently he was incapable of ‘just driving’ the car.

But I think the concept of driving for pleasure is perhaps more of a problem.

    why?

I think that is the unbridgeable divide in this discussion…

People generally tend to enjoy doing stuff that they’re good at – so this might explain it to some degree.

That doesn’t explain a large number of the people I see cycling (insert any pastime) for pleasure!

There would be plenty if a 100mph limit was in force.

They would just have artificial limiters like a lot of high performance cars already do (usually set at 155 mph). What they wouldn’t have is less power because pretty much nobody buys a car purely for its top speed. Nobody reduces the power on their supercar because it’s artificially limited to 155 mph.

    Exactly!

No it isn’t. I can’t think of a single modern car I would want to drive for pleasure (not just get from A-B) that can’t top 100 mph. Examples please?

So if, say, you found yourself in Dublin with a hired 3cyl Clio and a nice afternoon to kill, you would NOT drive up into the Wicklow mts simply for pleasure?

Speed is the ONLY thing you enjoy about driving?

I might drive up to the mountains for the pleasure of the mountains and views they offer in said Clio, BUT I sure as hell wouldn’t for just the pleasure of driving, because there’d be none in said Clio.

And no it’s not ‘ONLY’ about the speed, its about the joy of driving a nice car, be it fast or slow.

Here’s a question, does anyone frequenting this forum own anything that could be honestly described as a “supercar”?

Have TDI Passat (it is the ‘sport’ model)

But aparently molgrips one is more powerful than yours…. 😳

they can’t drive a car they don’t like

But they would have liked a Mercedes.

    Why would they?

Raikkonen did like the Ferarri because he couldn’t set the front end up to his liking. And Vettel can’t adapt his driving away from using RB’s effective exhaust blown defuser to give much greater rear end grip when coming out of corners.

Ron Dennis made an interesting comment though. He said that there were eight drivers on the grid who could have been world champion in the Mercedes

Hamilton & Rosberg are a given.
    Alonso
    Vettel
    Ricciardo
    Button
    Bottas
    Raikkonen or Massa

I’m not so sure about Vettel or Raikkonen because they both were outclassed by their team mate and showed that they can’t drive a car they don’t like.

I have a nice car, it has some hundreds of horse power, but I don’t drive it any faster than my other cars that were ‘slower’,

So why waste the fuel? There’s only so much petrol, it has to last us.

Because I like nice cars, I enjoy them. They’re nice places to be, comfortable etc.

Just like I enjoy my bikes. I could ride an entry level bike, but like most people on here I like nice bikes, one that far exceeds my abilities. It gets upgraded because something new comes along rather than it needs it. Did it need a pair of Pikes, are they going to change how I can ride. No not really.

The comparison between nice cars and nice bikes are really very simlar, it’s just one is accepted on STW and the other isn’t.

Okay, my car has just shy of 400 hp and is a full blown modern day sportscar

But you have a fast car so you MUST drive fast otherwise why would you buy a fast car……? So the rest of your post is far too sensible for you to actually believe. 🙄

Or maybe (despite some peoples beliefs on this thread) some people just like nice cars, like some people like nice bikes, or some people like nice watches……etc

That doesn’t mean we are all mad raving loonies. I have a nice car, it has some hundreds of horse power, but I don’t drive it any faster than my other cars that were ‘slower’, I don’t overtake longer lines of traffic. I like nice cars.

There is a spring behind the piston, but as the piston gets scratched up by grit the spring is no longer strong enough to overcome the friction between piston and bore.

You need to remove the piston and rub it down with fine wet and dry untill it moves freely.

Actually the BoE reserves are around £403bn.

    As you were.

My Figures were for GOLD reserves as taken from here as this is what was mentioned by seaosamh77

    WIKKI

However, if your figure is correct for the BOE’s total reserves the principal remains. iS will OWE rUK a whole shed load more from its 9% of the UK debt than it will ever get from its 9% of the BOE reserves.

    Circa

    £91,348,082,100
