I hate wearing knee-pads but wanted some for the Trans-Savoie – after exhausting research I went for the “Rolls-Royce” option and bought some Scott Grenade… they were/are brilliant; at a price though

Bonus is I now no longer hate wearing knee-pads

Use the “live-chat” option and they will respond – response to email only can be a bit slow.

I’ve had a pair of the original Wider 26″ for about six months and they have been great. The rear rim cracked during the Trans-Savoie but I have just arranged a warranty replacment of the new stonger rim. They have been great to deal with and the rims took some serious abuse before and after cracking. I’m happy to reccomend them… and I would go for the newer rim design as from my discussions with them they are confident that the new design is considerably stronger.

Fireguard, something like a doormat at the side to keep your fire-irons, coal scuttle and/or wood basket off the wooden floor… and some kind of wool rug out front; again to protect the wood floor. Likelyhood is an old house will be drafty enough not to need extra ventilation for an open fire.

Have you removed the foam wipers under the stanchion seals? Apparently these dry out and cause them to feel notchy. Out of experimental interest I put them back in last time I serviced mine and they now feel notchy

Time for another strip down; thankfully an easy task

No different to a fork stanchion or shock body, do you protect those?

I just clean it with water and give a drop of lube after use, been fine for two years like that.

I tend to hold onto mine far longer than I should, then either break them or sell them for peanuts.

The only one with any sentimental value has it for all the wrong reasons and I’m not selling it so that one day I will break the ******.

Do you think that impact would have killed an alloy rim? I often used to find dings in my D521’s, but you could bend them back out with a pair of pliers.

davidtaylforth – When I dent an alloy rim I usually know I’ve done it. To be honest I thought at the time that I must have hit something hard and therefore it would have damaged any other rim. But I didn’t remember hitting anything just a loud “crack” like a gunshot. Since looking at the rim at home and reading of other failures on MTBR I’m now thinking it was a rim failure rather than an impact.

I don’t have personal experience of the ENVE rims as £750 a pop is way too steep for me – but I bought some a Chinese made Light-Bicycle rims to see how they would hold up; and if carbon rims were to feel amazing then I would have an idea if £750 for ENVE’s was worth it.

I was loving the feel of the wheels and was confident enough in them to leave them on for the Trans-Savoie… Unfortunately I damaged my rear rim on the first day of the race when I went into a rock garden a bit “hot”… sounded like a gunshot going off but I only found the damage when back at the campsite… and it held together for the next five days of racing; although it was no longer tubeless after day three (the rim damaged the tyre sidewall hence the gel wrapper stuffed in it.

On the same section of trail someone else damaged an ENVE rim in almost exactly the same way, although mine looked worse and his remained tubeless all week. Neither failed catastrophically and nobody died. If I’d paid £750 I would probably be pissed off, but having paid about $200 I can suck it up – sh*& happens and stuff breaks when you ride bikes hard.

What I’ve learned is that carbon wheels do feel very good – the stiffness of the rim when you build the wheel up is noticeable, like building a wheel with a strong DH rim. On the bike the wheel doesn’t get squirmy and deflected like a lightweight XC wheel yet they accelerate like one – very responsive is how I would describe them. Now I’m back on a Flow rim out back I do miss the feel of the Carbon rim. Light-Bicycle say they have improved the design of their rims so I’m very tempted to buy another.

Much as I liked the feeling of the carbon rims I could still do a lot more with £750 a pop… and there is always the “risk” that I do something stupid and damage a rim (Flow rims have lasted anywhere between 2 rides and 2 years with me as I have a tendency to break stuff).

If the ENVE’s were indestructable then maybe £750… but they just don’t seem to be that tough which means for me they are price point too far. How ever many year warranty replacement is very good in theory but replacing broken parts is always a pain in the arse.

When I got BT fibre the Home Hub 3 it came with was crap and needed rebooted almost every day as my devices kept loosing it. I bought an Asus 70 Dark Knight which has not needed touched since – it also gives me a good signal all over the house so I have no need for my wifi extender set-up.

Loads of set-up options to tweak… plus it looks cool 8)

You can set a BT HomeHub 1, 1.5 or 2 as a slave. Then use home-plugs or an ethernet cable to get set up a second network.

It worked really well when I did it and I’m keeping my set up spare for when I build a new garage or shed.

    Information here.

Shocks don’t need to be PUSHed to be made better. Speak to Loco/TF/Mojo/Whoever about what you want and see what they suggest. In my experience TF only suggest the PUSH upgrade when they percieve a benefit.

Love Airplay – love the B&W A5 I have in the kitchen. I’ve got an airport attached to my old hifi in the back room and an apple TV on the soundbar in the front room. From my phone/pad I can control any of them individually, or control the main PC and control them all. It all works brilliantly and I listen to music more often now it’s so easy.

I listened to a few soundbars and subs in John Lewis in Aberdeen and walked away unimpressed… I know that a large showroom like that is not the best place to listen to anything but I didnt like the sound from any of them.

I’m sure the TS did not make any money in its first year despite the £1000 entry fee. The level of organisation and effort required must have been immense and it’s a credit to Ali and the team how effectively they pulled it off, and how professional they made it look… but I guess nobody is going to hand over £1000 for event that looks shonky no matter how amazing it sounds  .

Perhaps that is where Ali went wrong in Mark’s eyes? He made it look too professional in its first year

I enjoyed the final movie… and would love to ride the event again 2014. There is no other event that has timed descents that are that long… other than Strava

Why advertise… 2013 event sold out in under 30 seconds!

IMHO Air forks do feel different to coil. I liked the Bos Deville I tried as they do hold up in their travel and feel better than most other forks, as do my 36 Float and Marzocchi 55 RC3-Ti which have the same Avalanche damper inside. Even with the same internals the Float does not feel as smooth as the Marzocchi and hence for ultimate feel and traction for me the Marzocchi with the coil is the better feeling fork… but it gives away 500g compared to more modern forks like the Pike/34/Deville.

I like the idea of a lighter fork; but not at the expense of the ride as when I’ve tried Revelations I hated the twangy sensation. The Deville I tried was not as stiff as a 36 but I think I could live it, and I assume the 34/Pike will be similar. I’d like to give them a whirl… but I suspect my Coil Marzocchi will feel better, probably won’t make me any faster though and 500g is 500g and we are all weight weenies… buy what you like and then justify it with why you like it

Clearance is a bit tight running 36’s depending on your tyres. Chatting with someone (very fast) at the Trans-Savoie who was riding a Bronson with 36’s up front… he wanted the stiffness of the 36 over the 34’s he usually runs at home; even if that meant he couldn’t run the big Continental tyres he would usually (sponsored? :he was running a maxxis up front for the TS).

The 27.5 fork would is going to change a lot next year… Formula 35, Marzocchi 350, Manitou Mattock… I’d be tempted to give it a whirl with what you have until all options are available… or buy the Pike or X-fusion now

When I’ve been selling I’ve done the “House Doctor” thing and shoved a load of crap from the house into the garage and shed. The house looks better for it but you can’t show the garage or shed without making excuses. As above, shove blankets over them so they could be anything and nobody will bat an eyelid.
