My hardtail brings all the boys to the yard,
And their like
It’s better than yours,
Damn right it’s better than yours,
I can teach you,
But I have to chargeI know you want it,
The thing that makes me,
What the guys go crazy for.
They lose their minds,
The way I wind,
I think its time[Chorus x2]
La la-la la la,
Warm it up.

For comfort I’d go WTB Speed V or an SDG Bel Air
messiahFree MemberIbis if it fits… but even then only if your going to ride it.
Note… for the next couple of years time will be precious, having a retro toy for quick little scoots is no bad thing. I eventually sold mine to fund my Nicolai habit… no regrets.
messiahFree MemberOne of the guys I ride with sometimes carries one of those gizmo things which tells us all that information
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
messiahFree MemberMy Ti ring gave me calluses when I biked with it, so I started taking it off when I went biking… and lost it. Which is the best thing that could have ever happened to it as far as I am concerned. My ring finger knuckle is on the large side after I gave it a dunt a few years back, hence a ring to go over it was loose on the skinny finger beyond. The ring would move around all the time and bug me… definitely best off without… although the bitching about having lost it has never stopped, and probably never will.
I’ve not lost the engagement watch though 8)
messiahFree Member3 Five’s and 2 Alpine’s amongst the gang I ride with (One of the Five’s is an AM with Fox 36’s). For most trails and particularly all trail centre stuff the guys on the Five’s tend to be ahead as the bikes are lighter, it’s only when you get onto the real Doonhaller stromtrooper gnar trails that the two on the Alpine’s will pull away… how much of that is due to the bigger cahones and how much is the bike is up for debate.
If your okay with a slightly heavier bike focused more for the doonhall bits then the Alpine is the better bet, but if you want to be quickest on all the climbs and pay a small penalty on the descents then go for the Five.
messiahFree MemberAh, the joys of wide rims – on Flows with the rim strips I can get away with 20psi on the front and 25 on the back – Big Bettie front and Rubber Queen back. You can’t run these pressures on 823’s as they are too narrow. I get some wallow/squirm… but I don’t find it a big problem.
FWIW – start at 30… in a months time they will be down at 25 and you won’t have noticed
messiahFree MemberPads:- R1 + RX + The ONE = all the same.
No idea about the other stuff.
messiahFree MemberA custom tuned one – or a cheap one you plan to get tuned once you’ve figured out what you want/like. The most important thing is to get the right spring!
messiahFree MemberSetting up the lever is the finicky bit… and why I feel I got on with them better last night.
FWIW, I’ve got the lever almost wound into the bar as far as they will go and set up so I can get one finger on them only. Not quite sure how it can be that my usual one/two finger braking position with them made them blunt and grabby, but using the end of the lever only for one finger braking makes them feel much better. I’m trying to ween myself off two finger braking so this set up suits me at the moment. No problems with lack of power… they feel plenty powerful.
Quick look at the pads last night and they don’t seem to be disapearing too quickly, but I might try some others anyway as I like to have spares.messiahFree MemberPutting them back on the big bike which I bought them for
messiahFree MemberI’ve posted my experiences before, and just updated it with last nights adventures.
http://www.singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/formula-rx-brakes-3?replies=10
I’m getting more impressed as I use them and get used to them. Fantastically light and powerfull, and rather cheap for what I paid (removed from a Lapierre and sold to me by someone on here).
messiahFree MemberFirst ride into what I call the big hills with them last night… and they performed almost flawlessly !
WTF?
The lever does feel more solid with the heat build up but even with some stupid amount of work it never gets any worse. Rider behind did complain of the smell again, and I could hear the brakes making a wonderfull swishing type noise as they hauled the bike down from stupid speed before the rock garden section.
I played with the lever adjustments and have set the them up a little differently than I had them before, which seems to have done the trick – so I am now happy with them and they can stay on.
messiahFree MemberI don’t think Hope do anything for 1.5″ or tapered steerers?
All the Hope options are to fit a standard 1-1/8″ steerer…
I’m happy to be proven wrong though.
messiahFree MemberI’ve had Fox 36 Floats for a year now. I’m notoriously hard on kit and I was a bit scared of the service interval stuff but went for them anyway. I stripped them last night for the second time and as with the last time they looked brand new inside… shame I’ve pretty much destroyed the outside
I was thinking of Deville etc next time but I think there is another year+ in these so… as has been posted above… why change?
messiahFree MemberFivespot – nice mod 8) Where did you get the little zerk fittings from… or is that a problem and why you went for little grup screws this time?
messiahFree MemberI don’t think the pads are glazed, I bedded them in properly, and as the brakes are powerful and feel great most of the time I think they are as they should be. It’s just when braking hard they heat up and the lever feel changes and the modulation goes… and they smell.
After a couple of big decelerations on a steep slope I’ve found I’m having to ride around the brakes by braking earlier than I would like, and not riding as hard into each section so as to let the brakes cool to prevent the heat build up pumping up the lever. With my V2’s I can leave braking later and harder since I don’t have to worry about the lever feel changing. It’s only the super steep techy stuff… which is what I really enjoy riding and why it bugs me as it’s detracting from how I want to ride these sections
Seems like it’s a brake thing rather than a pad issue. Perhaps it’s the fluid but as the brakes are brand new I don’t see it being that? I was hoping to like them enough to justify moving to R1’s or The One’s but I’m disappointed with the feel of these so I don’t think I’ll be upgrading via that route.
messiahFree MemberThanks popstar… but I don’t drag my brakes so that’s not what is causing the problems… it’s just the nature of where I ride that there are big steep hills which require much use of the brakes. And at this time of year I’m only on the little hills as the big boys still have the snow cover… if the RX’s are struggling now there is no way they are going to handle some of my bigger adventures!
I was wanting to move away from the slightly on/off feeling but super powerful Hope V2’s, and I had heard good things about the RX’s. I was wondering if it’s a compound thing but it sounds like I should stick with the super powerfull V2’s.
messiahFree MemberRP23 = 250g
Van/DHX = 350g but you need a spring
500# Spring = 500g or Ti Spring = 300gmessiahFree MemberI’d be tempted to go 8 or 9spd… reason is the extra tension from running a short cage Saint rear mech which prevents it battering around as much as other mechs. Will also help with the front chainring guide issue.
Short cage Saint is also lighter than XT… true
Or SS it with a Rohloff tensioner and chainguide.
messiahFree MemberFamily resemblance to this would make sense…
… and make it rather sexy
messiahFree MemberDifficult to see how that design can “work loose” unless there is a defect… and if it keeps working loose then it’s worthess as it is unless you bodge something.
I’d send it off as cheaply as possible, nothing to lose but a few quid postage.
messiahFree MemberAre “Pro-Pedal” and “Boost valve” just gimmicks to make a one shock fit as many applications as possible… is a simpler (custom?) tuned shock a better alternative… discuss.
messiahFree MemberOne problem with replaceing an air shock with a coil shock is discovering how much better the coil shock feels… whether it’s worth the weight penalty ultimately depends on where and how you ride, your weightweenieness, and how “rad” you want to look (“nothing says look at me I’m rad like a coil”®).
messiahFree MemberIf you know your size for Etnies, Vans, Airwalk etc then ebay is as always bargaintastic… especially if you like/love/want/can-live-with dodgy colours.
Etnies do some fab “Mid” with ankle protection.
messiahFree MemberShimano MX with long pins.
Yes – changing the pins is a pain, not the lightest or the lowest profile/fashion etc etc… but at least Shimano do decent bearings which last unlike just about everyone else!
messiahFree MemberThis is my 40th present, a Fit BF2, and where I go some lunchtimes rather than a “gym” (I hate the gym).

IMAG0019 by thepimpmessiah, on FlickrI used to BMX 15 years ago… and getting back into the ramp thing has been painful but great fun… take it real easy at the start!!!
Check out 20twenty BMX and give them a call for exceptional advice… or go to your local BMX place.
It’s ace 8)
messiahFree MemberI had some older middleburns (RS3?) on square taper and the way the crankarm was shaped rubbed the inside of my foot which was very annoying. I also thought it flexier than the XT Octalink I had on another bike at the time, and the crank eventually cracked at the taper. The XT Octalink bottom bracket I had snapped, whereas the XTR one I have on yet another bike is worn but okay as long as I seriously overtighten the cranks… and I kill ISIS increadably quickly. Me breaking stuff is killing the planet…
I’d like to try the Middleburn HS2 as I love the single ring version – reminds me of my Jericho suffering on my ancient but everlasting and seriously overtightened 950 XTR.messiahFree MemberFull suss – my current main squeeze is the best ever by a country mile… 2010 Nicolai Helius AM… a brilliant all-rounder for how and where I ride
Hardtail – rose tinted specs time… I loved my Trek 9900 OCLV pro issue carbon in 1994. I’d probably hate it now though. My current Whyte 19 trail steel is not perfect, but it’s one hell of a bike and in reality is probably level best with the Balfa Minuteman it replaced. One day I will rebuild the Balfa and do a head to head. For crosscuntree the whyte will have it (which was why I changed), but on the doonhall I suspect the Balfa will kick the Whyte’s face in.
messiahFree MemberHopefully I won’t snap three 135 x 12 of them next year once I’ve changed mine over.
The body is the same – axles, freehub body and bearings a different… thats what the bloke from Hope told me on the phone anyway.
