When you feel the quality and see the lack of adverts and filler the £9 cost is forgotten about.

Just thinking – if you looking for an oddity I know where there is a bottle of Bruichladdich Port Charlotte PC6 Cuairt-Beatha which would be about that price. I tasted it when it came out about two years ago and it was brilliant – and at the time only about £80… demand is strong and supply is low so it’s gone up.

Info on the Bruichladdich Port Charlotte experiment here http://www.allthingswhisky.com/?p=471

My wife works in the local wine/Whisky shop and the owner is a top bloke and very knowledgeable on all aspects of the industry he loves. PM me if you want his shop number to have a chat with him – I’m sure he can sort you out with something fabulous and unusual.

In that price range that I can personally reccomend is the not peaty but incredibly nice Glenfarclas 30yo.

I love all the Highland Park’s I have tried so would love to try the 25 which is in that price range and generally gets high praise.

I have found some highly peated Whiskys don’t age in the same way as the others and hence costly aged versions can be a disapointment (ie not much different)… that said I tasted an aged Talisker the other day and it blew my socks off… but it is not on general release and I have no idea what it might cost.

Do you know what they like?
Is it a birthday/anniversary so go for the age?
Location of a special event or trigger for an area?

I should have done this last year. Watching with interest.

Hi Messiah, How are you? Biking plenty?

Not enough but some. It’s not been a great summer for big epics but I did manage a Big Mac with Italspark and a few others. Did Ben Alder loop at the weekend in semi-monsoon… not one I would repeat in those conditions but a good loop otherwise.

Maybe headed up your way soon 😀

I’ve got some old bib shorts and tights which are wrecked – I might try some butchery on them before I buy cheap braces – I don’t want narrow straps digging into my shoulders or a lumpy thing in the middle of my back under my camelback.

I need braces for my “supposedly” waterproof Endura Event trousers. They have so much crotch I feel like MC Hammer.

Yep – when I got mine in April I googled a load of pictures to figure out what all the bits were for and how to route the cables etc.

Watched the bleed vids a few times after finding mine needed bleeding… and very nearly lost one of the tiny little bleed screws (DO NOT DROP THESE SUCKERS OR YOUR IN THE POOP).

Absolutely love it… although mine is having issues… which is what you get for buying V-1.0 of anything. I’m sure I’ll get it sorted quickly and be back in love very shortly… I’m considering buying another for my other bike so I don’t have to swap it over… how pimp is that 🙄

The bargain rim is the Mavic EN321 for about £30. A nice strong Mavic rim and not that heavy at 570g (allegedly). Mavic make the best rims, it’s just a shame they haven’t started making them wider – the current downside of all mavic rims is that they are narrow compared to rim designs from others (Wider rims and tubeless allows you to run lower pressures and get more grip… for the added pain and faffing of using sealant etc… not an argument to get into here since you said you don’t want tubeless!).

The Flow rim in comparison is 100g lighter and a bit wider – but the alloy is a bit soft (In my experience) and hence the wheels are not as strong… but I am willing to live with the weaker rims for the trade off of lighter wheels and better tubelessness.

Come on Mavic – pull the finger out and make a wide rim at a similar weight to the Flow… the market will be yours again (Mavic seem intent on chasing the pre-built-wheel market and have not updated their rims other than cosmeticaly for many years now… *&^Yers).

I asked in the classifieds a few weeks back and picked one up for less than £24. Lovely cranks BTW, and mine were at a bargain price too

I liked the two Gobi’s I’ve had but both broke – one snapped in the middle and the other snapped at the wingflex bits.

I like the shape of my Bel-Air… but it’s not light considering it has Ti rails.

Sorry… no other suggestions from me.

    Dear Sir,
The mixmaster for Shimano shifter isn’t in the forecast of Formula product range for MY2012.

Horrendous rain forecast for the afternoon and evening so there was only one thing for it… get up at six and hit the forest for two hours before heading to work.
My plan worked brilliantly; riding through the forest with the dew soaked spiders webs glinting as the sun broke through the early mist was a lovely start to the day.
Shame I had to go to work after but heyho… and at 2pm the heavens opened… 😆

One day I plan to move the Rev forks, lightweight wheels and single ring cranks from my hardtail to my full-suss. I’d like to see how it rides in a configuration which should drop the weight below 30lbs.

Probably about 2 with mine… and the reason was not that they could climb up and down, but to ensure that they would only do it when they were allowed or supervised.

Gate at the bottom was the first to go – gate at top remained as we wanted to make sure they would not get up through the night and fall down the stairs.

Gate into the kitchen also remained until the age that they understood why coming into the kitchen is a bad idea and would/could ask to come in and get something.

In the work environment PPE is the last line of defence, in the play environment it’s a highly visible status symbol of max radness 😉

Seriously, it’s all bikes and it’s all good. A friend of mine is currently recovering from injuries sustained when another rider hit him. He survived the Mega and did very well… and was taken out on a dodgy daft fireroad corner while doing nothing that would cause a second glance. Should he have been wearing armour when it happened… hell no… sometimes s*&^ happens.

I weighed both my sets of Hoops on the kitchen scales – don’t tell the missus 😮 Scales are good enough for baking so I believe them!

Normal spokes and six bolt hubs – as I posted above 850g front and 950g rear so 1800g for the pair.

One pair I have with rim strips and the other with yellow tape, neither have I burped unless the sealant has dried out and I’ve let the pressure drop… or I’ve shredded a tyre. Frustrating as problems can be any I have had are purely down to operator error.

Post up a pic of your Ti456 so we can see how you have it set up… it might be the huge saddle bag 💡

But seriously, they are not slow feeling bikes and can easily be set up in a racey type stylie, so it would be good to understand your set up.

Yes… the consequences of a loose QR can be horrendous. When riding out with a group of riders I’ve stopped individuals and dealt with QR that are not done up correctly – I hope everyone here would.

Also… Worn out Quick Releases that won’t stay done up or wonky hubs that require the quick release to be “finger tight” to spin are not a good idea in my experience.

I’ve glued a few bits of carbon together over the years with Araldite. Cleanliness is very important as is keying the surface. So roughening the old glue and the new surface with sandpaper should be enough – then clean very thoroughly – blast with compressed air is good. Then degrease with isopropyl alcohol (brake disc cleaner, meths, or even nail varnish remover). Then glue in a warm dry place and leave for as long as you can to cure. If you do that it will probably be better than the slackers in the factory did it 🙄

If I had the cash to burn I would buy the carbon Haven’s as that is a big weight saving; but I don’t see the alloy ones as enough incentive for the possible hassles.

I’ve got two pairs of Hope ProII on Flow (ooooooh 😆 ). Both are 850g front and 950g rear +/- 10g… so 1800g for a pair. Ditch the rims strips and go yellow tape to save a few grams.

I did look at Haven’s and DT 1750 etc when I bought new wheels this year, but I like that I can get spares… no, sorry, NEED spares as I’ve trollied two rims in the two years I’ve been running these. I once waited 6 months to get spares for a Mavic Crossmax wheel and ended up buying a Hope wheelset while I waited.

Depends on how important the weight saving is to you. I’ve heard good things about the Haven wheels and a couple of friends have them… including a carbon pair *drool*.

Running two pairs of identical wheels means I can swap them easy. I’m running big 2.4 tyres on one and much lighter 2.2 on the other – the weight difference between the wheelsets is substantial.

IIRC – washing up liquid is a really bad idea due to the salt content and it’s effect on unprotected aluminium parts; you’ve washed off the grease and replaced it with salt… oops.

I have heard of one other Helius AM with worn bushings… the owner who is a good friend of mine let his back end get sloppy and kept riding it like that for six months. When he came to service it he discovered that the wear was bad and traded the bike for a Helius FR which has bearings instead of bushes. I believe the AM was fixed up as all the damaged and worn parts were replaceable. This had me paranoid about sloppyness in my back end; I spoke to my dealer and got the details and hence in the year I’ve had my AM I’ve checked it frequently and nipped it up a few times. I’ll do a big service soon but I don’t expect to see any problems as I have seen no sloppyness.

I have another friend who managed to bend the linkage plates on his FR and this lead to some problems with wear and binding, but the problems were fixed with new linkage plates. Hopefully all the damaged parts on your AM can be replaced but I would be very surprised if this is warranty? I’m sorry but it looks like wear and tear from poor maintenance

PS. I don’t jetwash my bikes… I use water only and maybe a little citrus degreaser where and when I need it…. my bikes always look dirty 😛

Interested in this for my Formula RX brakes. I have a Formula matchmaker on the LH shifter for my Hammerschmizzle but would like to integrate the RH shifter which is XT. I plan to borrow a mates Hope matchmaker and see if I can get it to work… talked about it weeks ago but haven’t got round to it… yet.

We have a similar issue with a ginger tom fighting all the local cats, it’s put quite a few of the other cats to the vets. The vet would like to meet it and has suggested we bring it to him. Neighbours are most apologetic about it but what can they do… they brought it back from the middle east with them and it doesn’t seem able to integrate. I use a water gun on it when I see it in my garden but it’s got very warey of me now (water gun kept handy for the seagulls).
It’s managed to trap itself in my conservatory a couple of times which has given me some sport… cats make quite a lot of funny noises when trapped; and watching this nasty thing throw itself at the closed door was better than watching TV… if I hadn’t had a few drinks both times my wife would have had me taking it for a journey. I’ve seen it in the conservatory since so I know I’ve not managed to put it off yet… lemon juice in the water… cheers for that one samuri.

I have two kids so the dependents is the tricky bit. I currently have life insurance for the mortgage but the heid-nip is for more… conspiracy to bump me off maybe 🙄
I would also want to cover her as if something happens to me I would need to pay for the kids care… hence the question.

Income protection I can’t see much point in – for the cost of protection perhaps I should set up something for a similar monthly figure so if I cannot work for a bit there is a pool of cash to draw from?

I guess speaking to IFA is the next step.

The CK 1.5 has a crush ring… my guess is the big impacts crush the crush ring and the headset gets loose. I’ve had to tighten mine a couple of times but it seems to have settled down now. The Acros I had never needed tightening but it rusted solid in a year… but the new ones have stainless bearings I believe. Balfa were great with a warranty. I’ll see how the CK goes… only been in a month.
