I just converted a deore triple plus XT cassette to 1×10 with oneup components 42T. I had an SLX long cage rear mech and shifting is a OK. B tension screw on rear mech is backed out most of the way.

    try it without first!

    great video and brilliant riding

    he’s using clipless too

drifting a bike through a corner is one of the greatest feelings in mountain biking, imo. Wish I could do it half as good as that.

by the by….he is one of the chaps that was in the fluidride tutorial video from a few years back – well worth a watch. Think it’s on youtube and iTunes

    freehold or leasehold flats?

Our flat got flooded by a leaky washing machine from the flat above while the flat was unoccupied for a week. £8k damage that was sorted through buildings insurance policy of the block. That insurance was paid for through the monthly service charge payments.

Agree with the other comments to let insurers sort it out. If you don’t have an insurer to use then I would insist on choosing the contractor. You get a quote or two and the flat below gets a quote or two – go with the lowest.

Agents are all on the fiddle and appointing ‘trusted’ contractors does them very nicely.

    condolences for your loss

When my dad passed away I inherited some stuff. First thing I did was put money into education fund for our kids as dad worked in education and that would have sat well with him. The rest of the money went into an offset mortgage on our current mortgage debt while we figure out what to do with it. I would of course give all of it away to have a few more years with him 🙁

I guess if the sum is large enough and you are already debt free, you have the opportunity to make the most of your life – so enjoy it and follow your dreams. Buy a sail boat or take a round the world trip?

edit – apologies – I missed you were looking for investment ideas.

    the root isn’t religion
the root is evil – some people are evil

Some people are evil sometimes, some people are evil often.

If there were no ‘religion’, people would still commit terrible acts towards fellow humans.
If there were no ‘religion’, people would still commit acts of kindness towards fellow humans

it’s in each of us to decide which path to take in every step we take. Sometimes we do right, sometimes we do wrong. Sometimes we do wrong to such an extent that there is no turning back.

If that happens I honestly believe there is justification for killing. The people who committed this act should be put down for the good of humanity.

Hope BB to replace the awful GXP one that lasted not very long at all. Hope do some clever adaptors for their BB that allow GXP chain sets to fit. Seems a neat solution.

Chaps! Just got to computer after visit to family. What a great ride and good to meet some fellow STWers. Richard those photos are great! I have been reading your blog for a while and possibly follow you on Twitter – how funny to meet you and not realise until after.

Cheers for waiting for me at the top of the hills. That ride was enough of a kick up the arse to motivate me to get fitter. Could hardly walk in the car park. I’d be up for another ride sometime.

I imagine mega and hob nob to be rather beyond my level of woodland pottering!

If there was a Strava challenge for making cake disappear i’d probably be in with a shout.

Sounds like a good ride plan for 2 hours and takes in some of the nicest trails for us to sample. Maybe a bit of Evian and JWSN action if there is time? Both are pretty close to the par cark so could do them last.

    It’s going to be fun!

    anyone into offset mortgages?

I quite like the idea of the flexibility – we often have cash from business sat waiting for a tax bill and could use that to offset our mortgage interest.

fee free fixed at five years at 2.84%

I can see that deal with Nationwide on Google but it has a £999 fee. We have less than 40% LTV. How do you get it fee free? ta

Having bought a DH bike, found myself hitting things I wouldn’t have tried on my trail bike. Now I hit those things on my trail bike and am selling the DH bike. Have also done some coaching days and those really bought my riding on too.

I agree with the £200 coaching £800 ratio someone posted earlier

Check my post history if you fancy trying (or buying!) my Kona DH bike, am based in SE (:

I’ve literally just got back from my 2nd proper ride on my Capra Comp and was going to start a thread about this bike. I’ll try and give you my impression of it so far. Bear in mind I’m buzzing and in new bike honeymoon period…..

    Climbing.
Coming from a stumpjumper 26 with brain shock I can definitely feel more pedal induced bob when the monarch+ Is in middle / trail mode. In firmest setting the pedal platform just about matches the excellent brain shock. The single chain ring is 32 tooth which is ok for me to get up most things I feel like riding up. Stops me being lazy too – on my stumpy I would just reach for smaller chainring and largest sprocket and spin away slowly. The bike does drag up climbs though. The 2.4 tires are huge and you can feel them dragging. If my stumpy was 8/10 for climbing I’d put Capra at 6/10. With some more sensible tires perhaps a 7/10.

    Handling.
Simply brilliant. I have been drifting the bike about like ive known it for years. It’s utterly predictable when the tires do let go and they seem to go together. I actually whooped with joy on a few linked corners and I’m a miserable serious bugger normally. The trail well and truly came alive.

    Downhill.
WNever experienced anything like it. I’m more confident and faster on this than on my full on DH bike. Admittedly this is not on full on DH tracks but it is very very fast. And to me fast is fun. I made 4 strava PRs on trails I’ve ridden for years today. With a big smile at the bottom of every hill. I’m going to get the missus to make me a little crown and rub my feet while I’m bask in the awesomeness.

    Jumping / dropping
Good. I did 3 drops that I’ve been eyeing up for a good while but not had the confidence to try before. Jumps that were scary before now get a little tweak in the air and are more fun.

    Customer service
Yt have been brill. I had a couple of problems with broken bits (reverb etc) but they handled everything very smoothly and quickly.

    Other stuff
Didn’t notice any difference with 650b wheels. I will probably do all the spannering on it myself. Doesn’t seem right to use LBS for this bike. I do feel bad for buying direct and not from LBS. The stumpy is going and will be replaced with a 29 hard tail from LBS to hopefully restore some karma.

If I were to sum it up I’d say confidence inspiring and fast downhill.

Sorry if this sounds a bit gushing but I’m really happy with it. Hope it helps.
