i did a few when i was a student at uni, but the ones i did were just testing interactions between other drugs / alcohol. The only trials i chose were with pretty well established drugs, i wouldnt touch a brand new drug!

Best one i did was checking reaction of alcohol with a drug. Got paid £300 to lie in a bed for 2 seperate days watching dvd’s and eating M&S sandwiches while being given a double vodka every hour and having to perform some memory tests and reaction time test every hour!

I wouldnt do one for £30 though!!

I can live without a bottle cage over the weekend having not used one for years anyway.

but everyone knows that as soon as you click ‘order’ your brain says you need the item asap and the days seem to pass like weeks!

if you’re in the lakes walking much and need advice go up to needlesports in keswick, take your boots with you. Probably the best shop in the lakes for climbing advice. (imho!)

+1 for not going cordless, especially if you ride at night and have proper nightriding lights. My wireless cateye micro doesnt work at all when i turn my lights on :-(

Supposedly the more expensive digital wireless ones are better, but they cost quite a bit more so i just went for a wired one.

ahhh i never knew that i'll have to update my version of training centre

BTW there is a new fimrware for the edge 3.20 released a few days ago

I think the manual you get with the 705 has to be one of the worst GPS manuals i've ever read.

upload it into garmin trainig centre and save it as a TCX file. Then you can upload this into bikehike http://www.bikehike.co.uk or bike route toaster http://www.bikeroutetoaster.com and resave as a gpx or other format

Theres also a program called TCX converter ( a freeware download) that can convert formats. http://www.teambikeolympo.it/TCXConverter/TeamBikeOlympo_-_TCX_Converter/TCX_Converter_ENG.html (but i've found this doesnt always work perfectly for me)

I think with bikehike and bikeroute toaster (maybe TCX converter as well) you can also upload straight from the GPS rather than going through garmin training centre but i'm not 100% certain. I always go through training centre as i like to keep a record of my routes.

Bikehike and bikeroute toaster are also very good for making up routes and courses to load up into the gps

mined creaked loads and i tried greasing it but didnt work. One day i randomly decided to just try swapping the spacers around a bit and that cured it! No sure if one of the spacers wasnt completely flat on its faces or something but it fixed the creaking.

Woody – another 'interesting' thing about the new system is that the fees paid to the dentist are not uniform across England.

Dentists are now paid according to how many 'units' they do. A filling works out at 3 units (and as explained above 10 flgs also work out at a total of 3 units) Each unit is given a monetary value (here it is £20) The patient pays 45.60 for a flg and then the NHS tops this up so the total is 3 units or for me 3*20

The interesting bit is that i used to work in a big city with a dental taching hospital and LOT of NHS practices and no one was really forced to have private treatment. When i worked there, each unit was worth about £25.

I now work in an area which is nearly all private, and we opened an NHS practice after getting the local health authority to provide some funding. However, the value per unit for this area (with a huge shortage of NHS practices and people travelling 30+ miles to come see us) is less at £20.5! Similar stories in other predominately private areas. And the powers that be wonder why there is still a shortage of dentists in these 'lower value unit' areas, even though there is actually more need for them! ( i moved to my current area for better quality of life – more biking and climbing :-) )

I know of practices who receive as little as £18 per unit, and others that are paid £27. Obviously when you are doing several thousand units the differences add up to significant amount.

yeah thats how it works, although economies of scale arent really correct because it takes multiple appointments and you cant really mix up a huge vat of filling material and do it in one marathon session. I've got a few patients on methadone who need nearly every tooth in the mouth filling + root canal work, which will take about 8 hours work, and i get 45.60 (well actually its £60 incuding the NHS top up)! But then i can get the same fee for a quick 20 minute filling on someone else. I guess its supposed to average out. However, the problem is that it actually penalises patients with well cared for mouths who maybe only need 1 filling replacing now and again – they'll pay 45.60 just for that, in the old system they would have paid about 10 quid for a filling.

jeez is this thread still going?!

2 points i'd like to make as a dentist

    1) Dentistry from a patients side isnt exactly rocket science. The majority of dental disease (excluding stuff like trauma or developmental problems) is entirely preventable by the patients by actually brushing / cleaning properly and following some simple diet advice. Have a look at http://www.gumsmart.co.uk .
If everyone did this there'd be a lot less work for dentists to do, and they would be earning less! I see a lot of intelligent people who come to me as patients and despite giving them preventative advice every time they still pay no attention and wonder why they always need work doing. Would you moan on if you did no maintenance on a car / bike and wondered why it needed fixing after a while?

    2) if you're NHS (as i am 99.9%) then all fees are set by the NHS / D of H. Regardless of how long your treamment takes (be it 10 mins or an hour) it will fall into a band specified by the NHS and we cant alter it, so if you dont like the prices and are treated on the NHS dont moan at the dentist, complain to your MP.

I agree there is some unfairness in prices, eg if you need 1 filling that takes 20 mins you'd pay the same price as someone who needs 10 fillings and 6 appointments. BTW we get paid once for each of those cases, so its unfair on us too – i'll get 45.60 (+ a slight top up from the NHS) for spending 4-5 hours on someone with a lot of work to do as i would on someone who needs 1 filling.

    HTH :-)

why do they put the crosses of thin black tape over lights at track days etc? I'm guessing its to hold the bits together if theres a crash, but i cant see thin tape preventing it all fragmenting, surely it would be beter to cover the whole light in a piece of clear sticky film, of use gaffer tape?

implants will probably cost around £1000 – £1500 per implant including ceramic work. You could maybe get them done cheaper abroad, but unless implants are done by a dentist who has been on a good training course and has quite a bit of experience with them then there is a higher risk of failure.

If you end up having problems with them once you are back in the UK it would then be a case of removing the implants or finding a dentist in the UK willing to try and provide corrective treatment (not always possible)

If they are done by a good dentist who's been on a decent training course, and you have good oral hygiene and decent bone depth + density then implants are very successful. Although more expensive than a bridge, they usually last significantly longer so although the initial cost is higher, over the actual lifespan of the implant it will nearly always out cheaper per year of function than a bridge.

or notice board at your local climbing wall.

you probably wont get much for the harnesses as most people are not that keen on buying 2nd hand 'safety' stuff eg harnesses, ropes, slings unless they know the seller very well or know its history. Shoes will sell be ok if they are in good condition and a good make / model

why do companies keep using zyro then if they are so cr*p, i mean doesnt it reflect badly on the manufacturers using zyro? Do the compaines not get to hear how bad Zyro's reputation is?

I've no idea how the manufacturer / distibutor thing works, but i've heard lost of bad things about zyro and it would maybe put me off buying some things they distribute.

not sure why some people find petorls more relaxing to drive. For me a diesel is much more relaxing (for everyday driving) as theres not as much changing down for overtaking. Mine just cruises along at about 1700rpm and i put foot down and it accelerates straight away. Same with all the modern diesels i've driven recently from Hyundai / Kia 1.6, ford 1.6, VAG 1.6 and 2.0 engines (all diesels).

I found the petrols i've driven recently much more hard work to be enjoyable with having to get the revs higher for any power.

Also super economy on modern diesles amd often lower tax (£35 on the kia and ford ones which were also very good to drive)
