    Are they “hooked” ones?

I started “proper” mtb riding about 4 years ago. All the guys I’ve become friends with during this time have been mtb’ing since the sport first appeared around here.
So every group ride shows me how massive skills gap is between me and the rest of the gang…

However most of my social rides are with one person, who knows my abilities very well and doesn’t mind waiting for me at the bottom of the technical descents (he also warns if he feels some tracks can be “too much” for me). But I kindly wait for him on the top of some technical climbs

They should be making few options of these.
You know: road race, audax, cx…

    … 29er, enduro, fat bike…

EDIT: And it would be nice to see girls using them too!

If your budget is £600 try to borrow extra £98.24 and get Merida BigNine 900 – in the UK it comes with Manitou Marvel Comp forks, which are fantastic!

Exactly… I managed to shift some stuff, like a nappies changing table and playing mat, without even consulting it with The Boss (otherwise it would stay up there forever…), but still it’s nothing…

Muc-Off Drivetrain Cleaner, chain cleaning device, a brush and a bit of clean water.

No “taking off” procedure required, nice and clean within minutes. Wipe dry, re-lube and go make it dirty again! 8)

I’ve got the Skyline Softshell jacket. I’ve had it for about 18 months already. It’s one of the best bits of cycling kit I’ve ever bought, honestly! Even though it’s in the mid-range in their waterproofness marking it withstands very heavy rain with no problems – this jacket actually made me believe in “waterproof gloves” again, as they work now, because no water gets into them through the sleves…

I’ve got L, all my cycling stuff is L and it fits good, with plenty of room for extra layers, but not too baggy. The overall quality is perfect – the jacket has some hard times during colder seasons and all it shows is the reflective tape on the shoulders starts to peel off a bit in places (I assume it’s because using a rucksack). But the fabric is great, but I look after it (I wash it using NikWax, which is recommended by Showers Pass or using soap nuts).

    Pricy but worth it.

Those Endura’s above look very similar to my Deluge – which are fantastic in cold conditions. Plus they are fully waterproof (tested!).

I do solo night rides on weekends very often. Sometimes it’s not possible to fit a ride during the day, so when it’s dry outside, daughter and wife go to bed, I have a cup or two of espresso or Hot Lava Java (“damn good cup of joe!”) and off I go! It’s normally about 22.30 when I leave home.

I love local woods at night – knowing there is no dog walkers rises up the confidence. I don’t do anything stupid on the bike, I let the wife know what route I’m going to do and planning to be home just after midnight.

There are just two negatives: it’s much colder at night and I have to sleep on the sofa after (waking up the wife in the middle of the night = dancing with death…).

I haven’t tried Gore cables, but I’m a fan of Shimano XTR ones – I don’t use full length outer, so this super-offer makes me happy – give ’em a try!

I replaced the rotors ages ago (SLX ones) and I run sintered pads. I don’t normally complain on the brakes, however I found that on long steep downhills it requires a lot of pressure applied on the lever to lock the rear wheel – I can feel the lever becoming much firmer and kind of pulsates (very mildly though).

sounds like a stiff link to me.

The links are nice and loose. The issue is present constantly, no matter which part of the chain runs into the derailleur.

    Worn rings.

Well… Now I remember it was OK on the big ring, which was replaces recently. Only on the middle… Time for a new chainring then!

For the last 2 month I’ve been trying to use “cheap alternatives” to muc-off. All different stuff: fairy, eBay “concentrated awesome cleaners”, etc…

I bought muc-off again last Friday to compare. All set: bike cleaner, chain cleaner (I use chain cleaning device), disc brakes cleaner… I gotta say – there are cheap alternatives. But they are not as good as the real thing. Not even close.

Enduro, 29er or Fat Bike?

What jacket have you got? Is it just a thin windbreaker?
As suggested above – a proper hat is the way to go too. I’ve got Sealskinz Belgian cap, very warm and covers a lot of my big head. Plus it’s wind proof.

Do you wear buff over your face?

Four years ago I entered a local XC race on what was my MTB back then: steel Dawes frame (I forgot the model… I bought the bike for £80 from Padstow Cycle Hire about 6 years earlier) with awesome mix of Altus and Deore, rigid forks, v-brakes, stock wheels, 7-speed cassette… I finished 4-th!
