Burton McCall, give our customer services a call

Gave you guys a call this morning. Due to the corrosion of the batteries its not covered by warranty, only suggestion is to contact battery manufacturer and try to reclaim cost of torch from them. I had kind of realised this and so not quite sure of the reasoning behind Josh’s post on behalf of Burton McCall above. Got my hopes all up for a minute….and then smashed them down again

Got distracted this afternoon and never spent anymore time trying to break in.

I’m pretty sure one of these will do

Cheers for the suggestion, it just ain’t a Mag-Lite though is it. I have plenty of decent reasonable sized torches/lights that I use with the bike/camping etc. Technology can make everything smaller and more powerful and lighter but there is something inherently satisfying about a well made bit of kit with some weight to it and a shaft big enough to wrap your paws around properly.

Give our customer services a call and we will sort something out.

A very kind offer, thankyou. I will give you guys a shout tomorrow.

Really? On the bike I’m higher up than most drivers with no pillars casuing blind spots and in traffic I can usually see further ahead than if I was in a car.

Yeah but mirrors help in a car – I’m very conscious of what’s happening in my mirrors, look around a lot on the bike too but can never be as good.

In a car your vision is surely better simply because it is not hindered by balance and shifting body weight. Turning to look out your passenger window in a car doesnt affect the car at all however on a bike you have to shift your weight a little to balance the bike

The hard bit is, I’ll be tellieing so the skis have to be light for touring but I still want some stiffness/support for the piste.

Check out DPS skis. The Wailer 105 is the best ski I have ridden. Their pure range, if your pockets are deep, is exactly what your looking for.

Edit: to add Clicky for review of said ski

Is there not duplicate issues with having an ICE contact stored in your phonebook? Surely that person already exists in the phonebook, so are we all renaming our partners ICE.

Try soaking the seized bit in Vinegar

Worth a shot while I try to fashion a strap wrench out of a large zip tie a pair of molegrips and an old inner tube

    Its all corroded.

Its a D series and the switch assembly is not very easy to remove. So hard to get in through that end. Its a case of getting enough purchase to pull it out without breaking the part your gripping. This might be affected by my unsuccessful attempt with a corkscrew bottle opener to pull it out.

Oo I like the look of that tool, seems like its exactly the right thing to give me the grip I need. Never seen one of them before. Might be a good addition to the toolbox for a number of jobs(none other than the seatpost and maglite one come to mind)

One of them, 30mm spanner and 2x 2ft long scaffold pole

One of the fat/phat/wide/pow skis is ideal for the job(cut in half to maintain the continuous sidecut), depending on conditions your’re planning to ride in. The steering front part is most effective at slow speed and with a more uprightriding position. As with a pedal bike, once speed increases then lean engle controls cornering and steering input is greatly reduced.

With a board-bike then the sensation is more of an easy drifting one, more of the time(rather pleasant). I suppose wider footpegs would be a simple way to make it easier to get on the edge but inherently that place will be hard to balance as the lean angle required is so large.

    Build it.

I think a board would be better than skis as it is wider and all you have to do is lean to turn, should be much more stable.

More stable perhaps but as there is much more lean required to get the weight over the edge then the majority of time you ride with a drifting sensation. Great fun.

Couldn’t open it (even once I’d accepted is use destructive force ) and couldn’t undo it from the other end.

Cheers for all the ideas. Given up on any realistic hope of live rescue. Agree with above posts about its weight and that there are more powerful and functional lights out there. Just liked this torch.

Now…to get into it. I will report back, I will not be defeated by potassium carbonate!

You’ve got to be a bit careful trying to measure speed and distance using the out put from a headcam. It’s likely the obstacles were much nearer than they looked on video

Granted. Just had my finger on the brakes and felt I could have pulled up a little earlier. Appreciate speed and distance are not so easy to see properly through the cam.

Thought the lorry driver was hyper aware of cyclists, but then it did show he had gizmos to let him know when he had riders alongside. He was very good and had all the gear and I can see how a driver in a lesser lorry who didn’t have the improved mirrors and maybe less urban experience may kill a cyclist coming up his inside whilst he turns left.

Well done to the lady who lost her daughter, she was so broken by it. Sad to watch. Her approach to the company and how she went about getting them to implement changes to their fleet and subsequently the companys actions were commendable. Outside of that individual case though, is it financially viable to kit out lorries in that way? They said that on average their fleet killed 1 cyclist a year, how much does it cost to kill a cyclist? Is it a reasonable ‘business'(not moral) decision to invest in preventative measures for these type of companies?

On another point…how **** are some peoples brakes!?! From watching the incident with the lorry, I think he could have reacted to the lorry quicker and stopped before he was that close to the tail. Not saying give r.o.w. as a matter of course but do react to the situation. Guy who rear ended the lady on the cycle path, again I reckon I could have stopped. etcetc (MOTs for bikes?? *ducks*)

Tried that but don’t think its possible to get through to the battery area without breaking something. i.e. Not sure if I do force my way through that the battery terminal will not then be dodgy/broken

……A granny, complete with tartan shopping bag with wheels thing, slide on the ice about 25ft down the little hill by my house. She stayed upright, got to the end and basically just walked on after a little shrug and backwards glance at the ice.

Sounds like confidence was blown and rational thinking had been clouded in fear/dread/doubt about the ice and conditions.

I would try to start simple and build confidence gradually from the ground up, set small goals and achieve them, positive reinforcement and a gentle serving of humour. General guidance and advice for the conditions, which I’m sure you did, can give them something to focus on in a constructive sense rather than just going round in fear cycles in their head.

Perhaps with the conditions as they were and light levels fading, energy getting ever lower then the best approach was keeping moving forward gradually. Your premium goal here was to get the person out of the elements and to the destination. If you can’t eliminate the cause of the fear from the situation then it can be hard to get the mind to focus on overcoming it. Back to basics and reprogramming the mind to start doing some constructive thinking would be my answer to your q.

Bit of an odd question, but why bother?

I have 18650 battery and charger and dont have any rechargeable AAAs so just a matter of pennies really.

So I went with one of the Cree lights from ebay, 2 for a tenner. It arrived today and impressed with the quality etcetcetc blah blah

Now I want to run it with the 18650, rather than just aaa’s, but it doesnt fit….should I bodge it to work?? or will it then explode and cause death?

.and build into a 1×10 *thinking about the 36t ring and chain device sitting in the shed*

but thats not what I want! I want to have gears, and knees, so I can get up to the top with enough power left to enjoy the down. This is my do everything, go to bike build.
