Leave well alone.

I’ve been there, not with the same longevity as your friend though and it was a personal experience to come through to the other side. No one could touch me, whilst I was encapsulated in so many layers of this mindset.

This entanglement is only possible to untangle from the inside. Anything that comes into orbit gets drawn in by the intense gravity of the situation. You can’t get in to that centre of it, so don’t try. You can do nothing and your best option is to do nothing.

I wish the best for your friend. People do come through it. He may well yet.

Love the idea. Have you seen this build using a similar idea? I like

There is a very interesting book which you may have already seen called Container Architecture. Definetely worth trying to get your hands on a copy if you haven’t finalised your design. A lot of inspirational concepts in it.

It used to be called a soul, the only difference being that the soul didn’t die when the frail vessel of the human body gave up, but moved on, which has always sounded as plausible as any scientific explanation, considering we’ll never know.

I can accept that as being plausible. What would a soul be though?

Surely it is different from a sense of self. Your sense of self is inherently linked to the memories and experiences you have ‘stored’ in this body, the neuron pathways you have hard wired through use and practice and certain motor skills you accept autonomously.

Perhaps the transferance of a ‘soul’ to a new collection of matter would be possible. It would also require extraction and removal of all associated hardware too. Otherwise there would be no residing sense of self. It then starts to look more like an organ transplant than anything else, which has its own set of issues wih the lifespan of tissue etc. Unless we can create synthetically acceptable replacements for what I have referred to as hardware that our soul would be happy to interact with and not just reject then we aren’t quite there yet.

cos it’s all about the psychology

I enjoy it for this reason too. It does amaze me how stuck in their ways people become, with destructive results for their business and relationships. There was one in NY(I think) about a father who stole his sons inheritance to sink 1/4mil into the business. That was interesting to watch how Ramsay sculpted the new restaurant around the kid and empowered him. Sending his father to stay only behind the bar.

His solution to the restaurants various problems are all pretty simple and similar. Smaller menu, local fresh produce, simple dishes cooked to order, clean crisp decor and 10-20k worth of POS digital ordering/stock tracking computerwhizzery and new kitchen burners/grills etc. PR stunt, usually just him being there is enough but sometimes using local radio to drum up curiosity. Et voila, restaurant brought up to date and functioning profitably.

Don’t normally watch it, but we watched the Price Charles special edition the other week, was pretty good (for TV).

I watched that too and came out of it thinking that big ears is actually a top bloke. The work he does with his charity group to regenerate our countryside and help young entrepreneurs is commendable. Not to mention the pachwork tweed/leather jacket he was sporting :D

Couldn’t be bothered reading the whole thread, cos I’m lazy too  but really…. back off of him. He’s 18 and you sound like a militant father trying to drill into him the attitude that you think he will need to be successful. He has an idea of what he wants due to the interests he has, ie gaming/I.T. What you are asking him to do is drop his interests and focus on the ‘hard reality’ of the world, ie money money money. Yeh he is only doing what he needs to get by at the moment and that will change as his situation changes which is imminent with him going to uni. I suggest you support him and what he wants to do for the remaining year or so of your full time parenting and don’t push for drastic changes in him at this moment while he is enjoying the last of the safe support of the home environment. Back off. Try to stop seeing it as him taking advantage of you and let him explore his interests without forcing him out into a pointless job excercise for your personal satisfaction.

You can’t beat the Meindl boots. Comfy as slippers almost from the get go, incredibly breathable which is a problem I always had with wellies and versatile enough to be a great hiking boot to boot.

They are overkill for what you need but I think you do need them. :D

Been looking at a saw for mself recently as I plan to do my cs30/31 tickets next month and have settled on a Husqvarna 550XPG

It comes in at double your budget(which is a bargain for what it is) but is 50cc and capable of running a much larger bar, although I need to use a 15″ bar for my tickets. In the past have used a couple of different Stihl saws, the 260 was my favourite, which you might be able to pick up second hand. Just be careful with second hand stuff as a lot of it will be ragged, I’ve been strongly advised against buying second hand and would rather buyy new and keep well maintained so that it runs for years.

In your budget I would be looking at a new Husq 435 (40cc) or a Stihl 211 (35cc) which should both be fine for firewood and small trees but might feel a little underpowered. I think it’s probably worth pushing the budget a little to move up to these and get slightly more power than the stihl 181 and husqy 236.

really?

Exposure for a brand is a positive thing. For an individual or group of individuals the concept of a brand doesn’t apply, therefore your examples aren’t so relevant.

I had forgotten about Findus’ crispy pancakes, now I will buy them once said horse scandal blows over.

Very good. Whilst you are all debating the pro’s and con’s of whether their approach is right or wrong, this thread remains on the first page of the forum. The more times I see the word ‘Surly’ the more accustomed to it I become and the more my mind accepts it as a ‘safe’ thing. I become comfortable with it and it is easier for me to believe they are a trustworthy company, somewhat regardless to the content of this discussion.

I was like you, I got together with mates and we hired Alison Culshaw (top off-piste coach in Chamonix). http://www.offpiste.org.uk/ all off us improved massively and got a huge confidence boost.

If you can’t get a group together, she also runs courses.

+1 Girl knows her stuff. A day with her or any other similar off piste ‘coach’ is a very good place to start. Difference between this and a ‘guide’ is that a guide is there to show you a route and safely get you through it, with limited instruction towards your technique.

I came away from my European Mountain Safety course with a decent amount of knowledge and development of my skills on variable terrain. I also had an overwhelming feeling of just how much I didn’t know, how hard it is to make objective judgements as to the safety of certain slopes and route selection whilst touring etc. A realisation of how un informed my decisions had been during my previous off piste exploits. There is a lot to understand, local knowledge and snow history being key.

You know nothing and any slope could slide on you anytime. Ride with people who are better than you and have more experience and ability than you, they be the ones who’ll be digging you out when you get caught in a slide.

Free the heel.

Free the heel, free the mind :-)

OP – Stay strong in the core. Allow yourself to be free to move more fore and aft to adapt to the terrain. Move more, flow more. Start to learn to read the terrain and make the relevant adjustments. Welcome to the mountains.

Everyone talks about soft snow and powder which is one part for sure but the more technically challenging off piste comes with the variable snow conditions. Crusty, choppy, windblown hardpack, trees, avvi debris etcetc

In reply to the OP though you can’t beat a full tang MORA knife for value and quality. Very little reason to buy anything more expensive than them for everyday use. The two mora’s I have are going strong after 2/3yrs of regular use.

Why do you specifically want a flipknife?

If you need one then check out the knives on Cold Steel. You can’t go too far wrong with most of their knives. I have a couple which are great, no folding blades though. The most recent is the True Flight thrower which is the best balanced knife I have owned. They do a Paradox too which is basically a UK legal version of the balisong I posted about above.

Worked in Australia for a time, did a few jobs with a few different people. Worked in Bulgaria years later, met an aussie couple working in the same place, was chatting one day and mentioned my time in oz. He said his brother had worked in the town where I had been for a while. His names not…is it? Noooo!?! Turns out he had been my boss and drinking buddy. Year later he came to visit his bro and ended up out for a ride with them. Small world.

Not good. Wonder how 6 people were injured?
When it derailed then it will stop abruptly and people getting on could be hit by the approaching empty chair swinging violently. Everyone on the chair should have been fine(edit: fingers crossed safety bars were all down) and although a traumatic experience they probably got harnessed in and lowered off the chairs, a long and drawn out process which maybe resulted in mild hypothermia depending on the conditions.

Support goes out to everyone involved and those in the operation to get people back on the ground and into the warmth.

If you want racism from Disney then you can do much better than this.
For example try Nazi Donald Duck;

Why have you put African Americans in quotes?

To draw attention to it.

The movie portrays blacks in a positive light, they’re kind, caring, generous and wise. I guess that explains why the NAACP dont object to blacks in many modern movies being portrayed as ignorant gangsters filled with a deep seated violent hatred.

I don’t think the movie was made with an intended racism, it was just attached to it afterwards due to an overbearing oversensitive sense of white guilt.

It is essentially a cheery old man telling kids stories. Interracial kids playing and enjoying each other’s company. A white child with a black man as a role model. A white child who nearly kills himself to stop his beloved black friend from moving away. Goofy cartoon animals acting out a story and teaching lessons, also the antagonists are two white children.

Shame on those who would declare this unfit for todays children.

Travelling at between 12,427mph (20,000kph) and 18,641mph (30,000kph) – around five miles (8km) a second, or eight times the speed of a rifle bullet – the asteroid will fly inside the orbits of high geostationary satellites some 22,000 miles (35,406km) above the Earth.

The “Hollywood option” of blowing up an incoming asteroid has been ruled out by experts. Such a dramatic solution would only result in deadly debris raining down on Earth. Instead, scientists are looking at ways of gently nudging an asteroid onto a safer trajectory.

How would you go about ‘gently nudging’ an object moving at such a speed? :?

Tallboy/ tallboyLT the LT is now my do everything bike size large 6’2″ they also do a xl

They do a XXL LTc in carbon too which might be a better fit.

You realise how small and bad fitting other l and xl bikes are.

After recently testing some bikes which actually fit me I second this.

Turner make bikes in sizes to fit proper men too :-) Might be worth trying to get a test ride on the 5Spot or Sultan.

or maybe a Yeti SB65 or Spesh Enduro
