Probably, but where would we get that much cabbage?

Think the problem was that these lugs had stuck out. Removed the lever, put the screw back in and hit the screw (gently) with a hammer. Seemed to loosen something and the lugs were able to retract again. Nice ride to work coming up! Cheers.

Some excellent advise here. Thanks everyone. Had considered a tandem but she has a bit of a bad back so didn’t think being a stocker would help that very much. Didn’t really consider that it would be difficult with a complete novice.

Perfect excuse to buy a BMX or cruiser (depending on her height)!

This exact thought had already crossed my mind!

Neilwheel – Thanks for the offer but live in Birmingham.

Cheers all. Looks like there maybe some free courses close by but they are currently waiting to have their funding confirmed in April. Think this will be the preferred route as she doesn’t own a bike. Mine will be too big (and nice) for her to learn on so will save us buying a bike in case she hates it (this possible?!)

Take the cranks off, drop the saddle and send her out on a grown-up balance bike?

As we do with the 3 year olds, pedals off, stabilisers off, use it as a balance bike

I had thought about this but she isn’t prepared to put up with the shame!

Will look into an adult learners course. Didn’t know these existed. The main thing stopping her so far is thinking she will look silly.

I’m not even sure how I would teach an adult to ride. A 5 year old is easy – they are quite slow and easy to catch. With the greatest respect to my wife, if I have try and catch her I will get flattened!

As to videoing – will certainly try my best but isn’t going to be posted here!

For some reason I think of cheese in terms of pounds, not grams.

Had long hair for years as couldn’t think of how to have it and hate going to the barbers. Clippered it myself last year to 12mm and haven’t regretted it for a second.

If a builder has owned the house anytime in the previous 5 years assume any work they did was half arsed and be prepared to redo it.

and amber pedal reflectors, if manufactured after 1/10/85

I’m sure we’re all rocking these… Is this why bikes come with no pedals?

Why the hell can’t there be a standard method for sizing tyres? I mean FFS, how hard can it be? I know you get different rim widths but why not size all assuming a 25mm or something? At least you would have some idea what you were going to get based on past experience. And why not add the profile to the size while they’re at it.

Personally when I think about it while not riding it worries me a bit. However, as soon as I get on my bike all fear vanishes, right upto the point the trail ends and I giggle like a lunatic about all the near misses on the way down.

freezing in winter and unbearably hot in summer.

Pretty much the definition of a conservatory nailed there. You do get a couple of nice days in the spring and early autumn when it is perfect though.

you must keep it separate from the house and any heating must have independent control so you can’t just extend off the existing radiator

What’s this about? We recently got a new boiler and central heating system put in and they put a radiator in the conservatory (on the same loop) without hesitating, let alone mentioning this isn’t allowed.

Just brought the Bose Soundlink Mini 2 (which I assume is the one you are thinking about). Very happy with it. American robot lady voice who guides you through the settings is a bit annoying but to be fair to her it set everything up painlessly. While looking for this I almost got tempted into something like the Sonos 1. However the Sonos is WiFi, not Bluetooth so requires the app to be compatible with what you want to play. As it isn’t compatible with Amazon prime music (at the moment at least) this ruled it out.

Have obviously come across a foolproof way of avoiding getting told off.

You’d get told off for a simple accident which breaks something that’s easily replaceable? [/quote]
Told off may be putting it a bit strongly but would certainly get a bit moaned at. Followed by being bugged into taking her shopping to replace it (this would be the real punishment!).

Nothing can ever replace books. Till you get a kindle and realise how much better it is. Reading on a phone or tablet is rubbish and doesn’t compare at all.

Not seeing any myself using android chrome. No adblock or anything as I understand the need of sites to make money. However, anything that looks like an endorsement from a poster needs different formatting if it is actually a ad. Also, if I was a P and still seeing ads despite paying not to I would be quite vexed.
