Someone organised that for their own agenda

Yep – those pesky Kentucky Catholics by the looks of it

The Diocese of Covington and Covington Catholic High School have issued the following statement:

We condemn the actions of the Covington Catholic High School students towards Nathan Phillips specifically, and Native Americans in general, Jan. 18, after the March for Life, in Washington, D.C. We extend our deepest apologies to Mr. Phillips. This behavior is opposed to the Church’s teachings on the dignity and respect of the human person.

The matter is being investigated and we will take appropriate action, up to and including expulsion.

We know this incident also has tainted the entire witness of the March for Life and express our most sincere apologies to all those who attended the March and all those who support the pro-life movement.

But yeah, apparently they’re all for dignity & respect…

I haven’t seen the first or second one yet.
    Are they any good?

Entertaining enough – he’s got a dog & kills loads of folk in spectacular fashioin, Keanu Reeves is in it – that’s about it.

Righty ho… I’m giving that a go for lunch tomorrow. Do I need to wash it down with a bottle of Bucky, then shout at buses?

Entirely optional with the veggie haggis, though mandatory with the lung-based variant – does make the afternoon fly in though!

    I’m starving now.

Toastie maker? no need. Tiny smear of butter on the outside of said sandwich, and dry fry in the big cast iron skillet.

This, but instead of a mere smear on the outside – just shallow fry the bugger in a big wedge of butter, bonus points for a selection of different cheeses on the inside, your tastebuds will thank me even if your doctor won’t.

I have to confess that I’ve never actually eaten haggis, so I think a cheese toastie with haggis sounds like the perfect introduction

As a toastie / baked potato filling – veggie haggis & extra mature cheddar is hard to beat, not as greasy as the proper stuff and it’s the herbs & spices that give haggis most of the flavour, so unless you’re truly devoted to the consumption of offal the veggie stuff might be a good place to start, it’s a gateway drug though & sooner or later you’ll be blazing drunk professing your unwavering adoration to a haggis supper at 3am somewhere in the rain.

It’s a bit of a weird shape & has a big lid/dust cover that overhangs the top of the cd player slightly – like this:

I’ve had it all piled up like that before & it makes quite a nice turntable looks like a load of crap piled up in the corner of a charity shop – a right bag of d*cks if you will – just trying to make it a bit easier on the eye…

Had another search online there & there’s folk chopping up IKEA stuff to make hifi racks, a crate like this is along the right lines:

And this – one of their £6 coffee tables with the legs shortened that looks like a winner! Looks familiar, that’s because I gave one of those away last week… in a nice grey colour they don’t sell anymore…

To the Swedish furniture hellhole! Swift hotdog on the way in, naturally

I wanted a Volvo estate, but a reasonable mileage V70 was proving unjustifiably more expensive than the ’04 V60 D5 I ended up with, only 76k on the clock with fsh, full SE spec, black on black with black leather & can still fit a decent amount of crap in the boot – It’s trying to convince me I get aboot 52mpg from it, but it’s probably nearer 42… Liking it so far – have thus far resisted to put a prancing moose decal on it…

Only problems are the stereo backlight doesn’t work (no biggie) and the info panel keeps telling me a parking light bulb is out (have replaced the fronts, will try the rears eventually…)

3025 miles, 206 hours, 263 rides – vast majority road, vast majority of that commuting – was just chuffed to get over the 3k tbh, a good few hundred down on last year but with a toddler running around it could have been a lot less

Birzman Maha push and twist floor pump. No matter how I’ve tried to make it work, I can’t. Replaced the head for another make.

I have one of those – worked well for a bit, but then the thread on the head seemed to wear down meaning it wouldn’t engage on a presta valve, I managed to fix it by screwing a brass presta adapter into the Schrader thread – actually works better now as the head spins so you can screw it onto the valve far more securely than you originally could.

Also had one of those lifeline co2 heads which simply did not work – as soon as you screwed the cartridge in it would just empty in one huge burst

Update on my furry invader – after a few false starts where the bugger managed to steal the bait from the trap, I stuck a big chunk of slightly vintage (& therefore very sticky) peanut butter on a couple of these:

Bingo! Poor thing never knew what hit it – I console myself with the thought that it probably got some of the peanut butter before the lights went out all of a sudden, hopefeully it was just the one transient mouse & the place isn’t riddled with them.

We actually have one of those ultrasonic mouse deterrent things in the kitchen after a previous episode a few years ago, seemed to be doing the trick but perhaps some mice are more stubborn than others…

I like the historical timeline on that Wiki page, 2015 was an amusing entry:

A 26-year-old man fleeing the scene with a singed face, smelling of gasoline, and holding a lighter in his hand was arrested. Under questioning, he admitted to committing the offence, adding that he was drunk at the time and that in retrospect, it was an “extremely bad idea”.

How far from the house did you scatter the mouse food?

A good 3 feet onto the patio – i’d have stuck it up the back of the garden but then I can’t see the birds’ little smiling faces as they eat it.

I’m planning to scatter little piles of mouse food further & further away from the house until eventually they’re lost & can’t find their way back to my kitchen. Humane AND crafty, unless they all get diabetes from my sugary breakfast cereal selection that is.

I have noticed that the mouse issue has only started as i’ve been a bit slow with the bird feeders this year, i’ll fire a few kilos of mixed seed up the back of the garden for the birds that live in the bushes and hopefully that’ll draw the mice away from my breakfast, then they can all fight it out among themselves.

I’ve got one just now that’s pretty good at avoiding the traps – the bugger emptied 2 traps last night although that was probably my fault as in my haste to set them I used a bit of biscuit, too easy to remove cleanly – needs something a bit stickier to spring the trap. Tonight on the menu we have a nice bit of dark chocolate that will be slightly melted then stuck to the trap so the furry bandit will have to work for it. Then be humanely halved in 2.

I Would feel sorry for it but the little arsepiece ate through a box of fancy muesli last week that I was looking forward to, chucked it to the birds in case it gave me the plague.

Disk braked singlespeed here with full length guards, going well so far – also bought a ninja-esque balaclava last week for the early mornings where it’s around freezing, that made me happier that I care to admit.

The more I ride that bike though I keep thinking it would work really well with flat bars & hydros with a cheap 10 speed set up for a bit more range, might do that for the summer & get some spangly polished mudguards into the bargain and knock up another winter beater for next winter… then feel sorry for that one too & tart it up with a few new bits then give it a comfortable retirement (repeat ad nauseum)

The “baby on board” thingy on my car is there as an explanation why i’m driving down the road like a little old lady in case a poorly navigated pothole wakes my daughter up & I have to sing bloody nursery rhymes all the way home, otherwise she’ll scream blue murder until we get home instead.

I know plenty of folk – myself included – who would take the car when going out for dinner & think nothing of having a beer or a glass of wine with it (maybe 2, you’ll be fine…), nowadays there’s not even the temptation.

The problem drink-drivers are probably still doing it but the “2 pints are fine” culture is definitely changing.

Then you get home & check the “lager cocktails” thread & pick a random concoction to make up for lost time :)

Paul Smith did a cracking limited edition range with Mercian a few years back, can’t remember what the price difference was but some of the paintjobs were really nice

I hope anyone buying those Chameleons for the resale factor ends up with an expensive coathook they can’t ride, or sell – there’s gonna be a markup over the stock price of one anyway – is there a market for an £6k bike that’s worth £2k with a different logo?

tastes half way between Irn Bru and Tizer with a bitter Campari kick for a finish. 7/10 would drink again.

Best advice as some have already said – stick your items on a neverending fixed price listing at the highest £ you reckon you’ll possibly get and automatically accept offers over a realistic amount & then forget about it until it sells. You’ll lose out on the occasional last minute bidding frenzy that bumps the price up by an unexpected margin but it’s less hassle in the long run & there’s no last minute worry that your frame / brakes / forks / whatever will unexpectedly only sell for £3.76.

I was in the Glasgow Braehead one at the weekend – one of the staff said that as things stood it was scheduled to close sometime in the new year with no word what was happening after that, hopefully if it does close it pops up somewhere nearby for the sake of the staff, always had good service from the people there.

Never mind lager based cocktails – I got talking to some mad guy at Wickerman a few years ago who asked if I wanted any of this cracking cocktail he’d made, turned out to be a 2l camelbak full of vodka & wine (white obvs), tasted like a 50/50 ratio, last seen him swaying gently whilst shouting “shiiiite” really loudly at Julian Cope. 2/10 – would not drink again.

I just ordered a pair of Brashers from MIllets – down to £75 from £150, but I also found another 15% off voucher online which brought them down to £66 delivered.  Worth the gamble of having to return them at that price.

I’d actually be the last person to go in & cause a scene, it’s just frustrating – although it looks like someone on the previous page was a day away from losing 2 grand, that would be a bit more difficult to stomach & may possibly result in an Adam Ant-stylee alternator through the window episode.

It’s irrelevant anyway as I tend to steer clear of anything related to MA, do genuinely feel sorry for the staff as it’s highly unlikely this takeover will benefit them in any way shape or form.

I got a gift card yesterday for me birthday, must have been bought in the last few days & probably now worthless – if it is I’ll be tempted to place a massive order to collect in store then then throw a big strop & cancel the lot when they won’t accept it. Petty, yep.

I eventually managed to stick a chain, and a couple of hundred miles on this:

Started off as an old Charge Filter, all that’s left now are the frame & forks – had it powdercoated in RAL 6034 (pastel turquoise), Thomson post / stem / seatclamp, Deda bars, TRP RRL levers / Spyre calipers, Shimano Alfine cranks & chain tensioner, Cane Creek 40 headset, wheels I built myself from Novatec hubs with Halo Aerotrack rims, currently on 32c Voyager Hypers with full mudguards.

Set up with 39×16 which is about 66 gear inches – so far so good, my commute is a pretty flat 10 miles each way and up until this week when I became inexplicably lazy arsed i’d been using it 4 days a week for the last few weeks, got used to it quite quickly – actually now tempted to strip down a road bike & make something really light for the nicer weather commuting…

apparently a Chinese state TV reporter went there & disrupted a debate on political freedom in HK – in the process she opened a small can of whoop-ass on a young tory named Enoch… who the **** names their child “Enoch” apart from Mrs Powell?

Cheers, that tensioner is a bit of a lump isn’t it! I tried an almost new Kool chain I had from an old bike & I might have actually got away with it by adding a half link – I may still try that idea as there’s only so much lateral adjustment from the tensioner the chainline might not be 100% Or maybe i’ll get one that doesn’t weigh as much as the geared parts I removed put together…

I’ve just had my old Filter blasted & powdercoated as it was looking a bit scabby – building it back up as a singlespeed for this winter as it’s less to clean :)

Picked up a cheap Alfine crankset & an Alfine tensioner so hopefully that’ll keep the chain in check – mudguards are going back on & a set of 32c Voyager Hypers should keep everything rolling along nicely, can’t wait to get it finished & back on the road

I like the same kind of stuff – went to Finale a few years ago & found it a bit, ahem, “challenging” however that could have been down to a communication breakdown that lumped me in with a group of mentalists that were riding down stuff i’d need to abseil…

One place i’ve seen vids of that looks amazing (to me) is Livigno – Hans Rey designed some of the trails there I think & you can jump the gondola up then it’s about 50k of groomed swoopy singletrack back down, scenery looks pretty good too.

The bearings on Fulcrum lower end wheels (apart from the CX versions which are double sealed) are only sealed on one-side, hence the lower lifespan – think the Campy equivalents are the same in fact. I had a pair of the 7 LG on my commuter for a while & found them pretty good, never needed touched, although I had packed the bearings out with extra grease to help protect them a bit.

Have second hand Zondas on another bike & they’ve been faultless despite getting on a bit – i’d have another set of these in a second if they needed replaced – same as the Fulcrum 3 apart from the rear lacing.

Hunt uses Novatec hubs, Kinlin rims & Pillar (I think) spokes on top of some nice branding, you might get them same thing from one of the specialist wheelbuilding places for slightly cheaper – a friend ran a set of the 4 seasons disc wheels right through 4 seasons in the West of Scotland & by the end of the year the rims were cracking round the spoke holes and looking a bit worse for wear – I think they warrantied them though.

If you’re up for building your own, BDOP cycling in Taiwan sells their own diy wheel kits with everything you’ll need to build them – pretty much the same stuff as you’ll find in the Hunt wheels but cheaper, i’ve never bought a wheel kit from them but i’ve bought hubs & freehubs from them and they arrived surprisingly quick. The do a 1350g 20/24h wheel kit for $320 that looks good for the price…

Footflaps – I had thought about that, however there’s a much higher chance that I would make it 10x worse than actually fix it – going to try another place today & see what they reckon but i’ll ask if they could do it by hand.

Lunge – got that cheers, hopefully I don’t need it but i’ll keep them in mind as a last-resort!

    mcj78

Lunge – fire me the details if you would, this damn boot (not my wife) has become a bit of a saga, all because I initially said it looked piss easy to fix & i’d get it done no problem… it’s no longer about the material cost, it’s like those old wheels that you end up spending £10 per spoke to fix x 20 trips to the bike shop rather than accept they’re crap & leave them in the shed, but you do it anyway because whenever you see them it annoys the hell out of you :)
