Some comedy gold on this thread

Was in the garden last week & a random cat appeared, rubbed itself on my leg then wandered away & dug a hole in the corner of the garden, shat right in it, then neatly covered it up again and wandered off.

tbh I was impressed by the bravado of the furry shithouse, but also annoyed, so I went to the back door & summoned our resident terror-pomeranian who shot out the door like an really fluffy exocet missile & chased the bugger up a tree.

Our old neighbour had 4 greyhounds which seemed to keep the local cat population at bay – used to see posts on the local fb gossip page about missing cats in the street & wonder if folk knew that the old lady a few doors down had 4 huge natural born cat-shredders tearing about her garden…

If you have no other pets or children wandering around, try some wires attached to a car battery run under a suitably conductive surface – slightest bit of pressure & the circuit completes with electrifying results, seen a video of someone doing it to curb a rodent problem, seemed to work.

I replaced bearings on a Mavic front wheel recently, both were replaced from one side.

When the bearing separated did you remove the outer race from the hub shell?

Ahaaa – I was wondering if they had to be pressed (walloped) in from the same side – suppose it makes sense if the centrelock splines reduce the outer diameter of the shell at that side & the 12/15mm(?) axle reduces the available inner height available for the bearings to occupy…

The bearing outer may well be still in the shell – will pop down to the shop & check, makes sense if it was against the lip & had nowhere to go… there were a couple of internal circlips in the axle – I take it the axle is a uniform width all the way through & the circlips act as stops for the bearings once they’re in place, makes more sense now – will get back onto it!

    Cheers all!

All the preload bits – wavy spring & circlips etc. are on the non-disc side, these are definitely all off i took a picture of them all so I would remember which order they went back on – the axle assembly then taps out from that side.

The old disc side bearing was totally shot – it disintegrated upon removal before I found the issue so it’s in the shop bin in fragments

The top pic has the bearing resting against the bearing seat i.e. inside the hub shell – had already been removed so didn’t want to push it back in again for the benefit of a pic

The lower pic shows the bearing (silver) sitting on top of the hub shell (black) on the opposite side – it’s pretty much the same size as the outer shell at that side – the black part directly below the bearing is the edg eof the hub shell with the centrelock splines below that

I’m stumped – all Mavic’s tech docs show either 2×6804 bearings or 2×6002(?) for the earlier models – none have different bearings in each side

Cheers all – I ordered one of the Saris fork mounts to try out, with a bit of extra re-enforcement under the boot floor it should do the trick & it’s fairly low profile too for when there’s not a bike in the back – it’s only probably going to hold a road bike for now but with having our 2yr old in the car too I want something that’s fixed in place as securely as possible.

The Minoura looks good but can’t see a way to fix it in place, would be a good solution if there were bolt holes in the feet somewhere for a bit of extra security – the Bikeinside one looks pretty good too, if you could open some access panels in the boot & get the mounting feet against some metal it looks like would be solid.

    Cheers!

Cheers guys – any of those would probably do the trick, those Saris mounts look like a good option – will have a look at the boot floor to see how sturdy it is, maybe re-enforce the area the mount would attach to… and big washers – anythign is better than the current “wedge it between the seats” method…

I’m doing my bit by having sold my hulking great Volvo & replaced it with another bike. I will probably regret this decision come winter, but that’s future me’s problem (the train station is only a mile away and is well connected). The car still obviously exists… but probably won’t see a lot of action.

That Atom looks just the ticket – could spend more than that cobbling some random bits together once you start buying new bolts / bearings / risers / tape etc.

A twin tip like that is probably a better shape for me than a pintail, I do like some wood grain on show – I’ll tell the wife it’s an important parenting tool… which is true as my 2 year old daughter was extremely impressed by me dragging her along on her scooter on the old mini cruiser #stillgotit #neverhadit

Sounds good – fancied one for a while, had a look at some cheaper completes from mindless / osprey / Maui for around £40-£50, any reason not to go with any of those or is one better than the others?

Hi guys – been looking through this thread with interest, recently dug out an old cobbled together setup (cheap old school 23″ mini cruiser deck with 90s venture 8.5″ trucks & slimeballs – not the prettiest but it works, kinda) using it to keep up with my 2 year old on her scooter but fancy something a bit bigger.

What’s the best option for general cruising around without spending a fortune? Probably don’t need a 40″ drop through longboard but what about a cruiser / pintail type thing? Would something like that work with my existing trucks or would it be better to pick up a cheap complete for £40 or so?

    Cheers!

Years of playing football on hard surfaces (indoor & outdoor) did it for me, cycling (and swimming) is probably the best low impact exercise you can do to improve muscle strength & cardio fitness

I’ve had cartilage problems with one of my knees for ~10 years now, pretty much given up on MTB as the constant change of foot position / twisting & turning (brake bumps especially) were doing me in – I dare say I could manage light xc no problem as I can happily sit on the road bike all day, but any lateral movement in the joint just leads to grief – recurring advice from various consultants & physios was “if it hurts, stop it”

Keeping the strength up in the surrounding muscle groups helps support the joint & that worked wonders for me – one physio that was pretty helpful recommended squatting & keeping my lower legs perpendicular to the floor, not taking the knee joint past 90 degrees – it takes a bit of getting used to shifting your balance but once you get used to the movement, you can start putting some weight on there.

    Best of luck with it!

Trailwagger – they’ve been around for a while, looks like they’re having a bit of a shuffle and are re-doing the website – the shoes used to be (maybe still are) made by an Italian company called Maressi and sold under the Dromarti name, used to do really nice mitts too (never got my hands on a pair of those – boom boom)

I picked mine up new on ebay about 5 years ago – but if I were to spend £200+ on a pair of shoes i’d buy another pair of these before some 100g spangly carbon fibre disco slippers, mine have probably done at least 5k miles – most of those commuting in the West of Scotland – & they’re still in perfect nick apart from some minor wear on the soles from walking (SPD sole so it’s pretty chunky – years left in it)

If you want old skool in a modern shoe, these look good.

    https://dromarti.com/pages/gallery

I’ve got a pair of those – done thousands of miles in them & they still look amazing & just keep getting comfier, wondering if i can replace the sole at some point as the uppers look like they will last forever!

Cheers, yeah had followed that guide the first time I rebuilt them – pretty handy, the only thing that appears to be available as a spare part from TRP is the pad adjuster & barrel adjuster, I might just pull them apart again & add fresh grease to see if the bearings feel any better after rolling around in that, the bike they’re going on is currently a work in progress so I have a bit of time to play about with them before I need them.

    Cheers!

Memory foam mattresses are overdamped, too much rebound so they pack down in vital situations

    I lold

We’ve got a Sealy something or other that has normal springs & shiz but a layer of memory foam on the top – can’t remember how thick the layer is but it’s darn comfy

Another thing to remember about memory foam is that it doesn’t breathe as well as a normal mattress – mmm, clammy…

+1 for a s/h Isla – there’s a facebook page for buying & selling them, I picked up a pretty much new one for half the rrp & if the ebay prices are anything to go by, i’ll get that back after a couple of years of abuse.

It’s really light & is a proper little bike – even has an actual headset instead of a plastic bushing that some seem to have… wish i’d had one when I was 2/3

That was partly what I was wondering. Uneven wear on tyres of unknown origin/vintage (although the age of the Tyre is on the sidewall the mileage is presumably unknown) could mean that they haven’t been cared for and rotated and balanced properly, so at that point is it worth doing all 4 at the correct size for peace of mind?

TBH they probably haven’t ever been rotated – certainly not since we’ve had it, but I know what you mean – had a proper look at the rears and they’re completely even wear-wise & still look quite new, if they were slightly more worn or cut up i’d replace all 4 and go back to the “normal” size but I don’t want to spend another £100-odd unless I have to

    It’ll be fine, drive on.

This is my preferred option ;)

I only say that as ours is a Skoda – the first one I refused to take back for the emissions-scandal software “upgrade” and the second one (identical car) already had it done when we bought it, felt like a completely different engine…

    mcj78

It could be the car had not the right size fitted at the factory. I bought my car at 1600 miles and the tyres come up the wrong size for my reg number (225/55/16) tyres actually fitted are 225/60/16 I assume the production line wasn’t stopped for the right sized tyres and these were fitted instead.

Why do only 2 tyres need replacing?

I’m not a fan of replacing one tyre at a time, even for the same type – it’s fronts or rears or everything.

My wife wrecked one front tyre on a huge pothole recently & just drove into the nearest tyre place and replaced it with the cheapest available – so currently the fronts are mismatched and I can feel a noticeable difference between them, I also noticed at the weekend the original front is worn on the inside edge – alignment out somewhere – so that needs replacing & I really don’t want 2 of the shitty plastic feeling efforts on there, so for the sake of an extra £50 for peace of mind that’s getting ditched too.

That’s more what i’m concerned about tbh – the manufacturer states 205/45 for that size wheel…

    mcj78
    Free Member

    I wouldn’t wonder too long 👍

No way you could “feel” the difference in those sizes.

Aye, it’s probably the fact the old one had about 70k on it and the newer one had 20 :D

On the price thing – the 205/50 seems to have much more choice so that’s probably why it ended up with them being fitted, probably by the original owner who traded it in…

    mcj78

The rears are totally fine, so if i’m staying with the same size – not specced by the manufacturer – it’s 2 I need, if there’s an possible issue with the bigger size (handling / speedo out etc etc) & I need 4 new tyres i’ll probably be asking the dealer why they sold us a car with the wrong size tyres.

I’ll phone the dealer & ask if I can use bigger tyres – if they say no i’ll ask whey they sold it like that then, before taking to the t’internet and besmirching their good name, as is the socially accepted norm these days.

We actually had another car the same before this (some buffoon crashed into it when it was parked & wrote it off) and I always felt the new one felt a bit different somehow, probably my imagination but now i’m wondering…

On the subject of “send ‘er back…”

From the Guardian article linked to earlier – she couldn’t be stripped of UK nationality if it left her stateless, however if her parents weren’t born in the UK she would be eligible for dual nationality in their country of birth & could take that instead.

Those who have had their citizenship removed include gunmen and “jihadi brides” who travelled to Syria, it added.

They are all dual nationals, including British-born people with parents of different nationalities, because ministers cannot take away citizenship if it would leave a suspect stateless.

Whether or not that would be the right thing to do is a bit of moral quandry, although it appears there’s slim chance she’ll make it to a consulate to plead her case anytime soon…

I’ve got a 11 speed tiagra rear mech and shifter in my parts bin so it should all work with an 11 spd cassette fitted to the turbontrainer.

Tiagra is 10 speed – so you’ll need a 10 speed cassette & wheel which increases the possibility of a bargain, rear road spacing has been the same width (130mm) for about 30 years – unless you pick up something really old you’ll be fine.

    Shimano 105 5800-> and Ultegra 6800-> are 11 speed

    j

Edit – the 10 speed tiagra might work ok on the 11 speed turbo cassette with a bit of screw twiddling but if you’re only gonna use the one bike ont he turbo i’d fit a cheap 10 speed cassette & keep the 11 speed spare for the good bike

she’s got a point though, she’s paid for a seat to sit on, so have the fatties next to her but they are ocupying more than a seat…

Is she fat-ist or is it possibly something else I wonder… the flight is half empty, not difficult to move seat for a bit more space without being a walloper about it, is it?

In saying that – if I was on flight sandwiched in-between two large folk spilling over onto my lap & had nowhere else to go, I would not be amused – i’d be taking it up with the airline though (in as polite a manner as possible)

That PT bloke up there has popped up in a few things i’ve seen – comes across as a bit arrogant but I find it difficult to disagree with most of what he says, he had a good rant on “cheat days” a while back, essentially if you need “cheat days” from your diet, it’s a shit diet & sitting on the couch stuffing 9 pizzas into your face will undo all the previous good work & then some.

Ultimately, you can’t out-train a bad diet – i’ve been trying for years & with a bit of self-control on the cake-front i’d easily be 10% lighter, during the summer I average about 100 miles per week commuting & winter it’s about 60-80 so there’s plenty of calories to spare in my diet. But my clothes still fit me & I like a beer and a pastry now and again so meh.

Not to mention who actually owns your DNA afterwards ….

    and

Nope and DNA testing is a back door to data harvesting as has already been shown.

No chance I would give that sort of info to some random company – next thing we have god knows who getting hold of the profiles & you start getting targeted marketing based on a genetic predisposition you knew nothing about… hang on, why are all those ads for cat aids? ->

But seriously, bugger that – same with police forces that retain your DNA sample if you ever have to give one unless you specifically request that it’s destroyed (if you’re innocent of course, lol). A friend some years ago bore a mild resemblance to some local lunatic who had left some form of DNA sample at a crime scene – they took a sample which proved it was nothing to do with him, however he later learned that they don’t automatically destroy the samples from innocent parties, they stay on the database, just in case…

I actually just popped on here to ask about best bang for buck s/h compact digital cameras – I bought the missus has a Canon s95 a while back & it’s been great – has been everywhere with us, I don’t really need the extra flexibility of an SLR so a compact with a better lens / sensor really would be perfect – don’t need changeable lenses either.

I’ve seen good reviews for the G5X but it’s still quite expensive s/h – have seen a few of the original G1X going for not much over a hundred quid – is that a good option or are some of the Fuji X100 a better bet – they seem to get great reviews but not sure the difference between the models & if any are worth spending more on?

I’ve had pretty good results with that Dettol stuff – I have a couple of old trusty base layers that get absolutely howling if not washed immediately after wearing & then transfer the stink to jerseys / jackets etc. might give the Tesco own brand stuff a whirl.

Also – I tend to throw caution to the wind & wash at 40, seems to help & nothing’s shrunk or disintegrated in the wash so far
