Bring them back, broadcast their tearful accounts of rape by unwashed bearded men on the telly, then give them a few hundred hours of laborious community service.

Kids make mistakes. Everyone deserves a second chance. That’s the difference between us and them.

Is probably the most reasonable & forward thinking way forward. However, i’m ever the cynic & must admit that it had crossed my mind that some of these youngsters coming back with their tales of woe & depravity could actually be too far indoctrinated and coming back as clandestine heroes to some and will sow the seeds of future problems with extremism.

    Hang ’em

If your bike will take ’em – get some of those cheap 35c Vittoria Voyager Hypers from PX & just smash through them top speed :D

Best shifting I ever had was with a 9 speed Ultegra casette / 105 mech / XTR shifter (Shimano chain & those coated XTR cables), fast positive shifts & almost silent – could barely feel it… although it was also probably the last time an actual mechanic set the gears up as opposed to my ham fisted attempts :?

Still – at least a few of us plebs might make a couple of quid if we manage to snap up a few loose shares in the next round of cut price asset stripping for the benefit of old etonians :(

The more I read on whisky sites the more i’m leaning towards maybe 2 nice bottles rather than 1 slightly nicer one, few of the 18/21/25 yr old bottles i’ve looked at have good reviews but some stating the £30/£40 price difference up from the 15/17/18 bottles isn’t justified…

Didn’t make it into the pot still last night but having a low-key stag do on Saturday so might sneak a few cheeky numbers then (hopefully i won’t be paying) 8)

Wow, cheers guys – plenty to think about there – I may pop into the Pot Still tonight & see if they’ve any suggestions as i’ll be in town later… usually to fully energize my whisky tastebuds I need several pints of fighting strength lager first so we’ll see if I can go straight in & pick a winner starting from cold :D

mcj, does different salt actually taste different?

Aye, as much as it pains me to say it, not so long ago i’d have scoffed at the suggestion

The fancy pink stuff isn’t quite as salty as regular sea salt flakes & the smoked stuff definitely tastes smoky… coincidentally yesterday I found some lemon salt crystals we were harangued into buying in Istanbul a while back by Del Boy in a fez & rubbed it into some chicken, tasted bloody great.

President is good – very creamy (mmm, creamy) however I like to jazz it up a bit with some sea salt flakes, those fancy arse pink himalayan ones are a good bet as they’re a bit milder than the normal Maldon stuff, although the Maldon smoked stuff is very nice but maybe slightly overpowering on a mild creamy butter.

    I can’t believe i’m critiquing butter & salt on a bike forum… :|

I’ve just got a frame back from a local powdercoaters – finish is really good & although they only had the standard “alloy wheel refurb palette” in stock, they offered to wet paint then clear powder over that for durability if I wanted a specific colour.

Cinque Terre is nice, however pretty touristy (plus a constant stream of folk getting on & off that train for an hour in each village along the coast) – much of the Amalfi coast is the same, Positano etc. are lovely but you’ll be paying tourist prices for the views.

If you like the sound of Italy, an hour on the ferry from Naples is Ischia which is great & full of Italians on holiday – been a few times & going back next month – nice & chilled. October might be starting to cool down a bit though – season usually runs from June to September.

I can see me going the distance or a big KO after ten 1 pint rounds and 5 espressos sends me flailing head first through the garden fence.

Of all the big hype bouts of the last 20 years, screened at ungodly hours, i’ve slept through most of them. Usually in a room full of similarly unconscious snoring drunk folk crashed out on couches / floors etc. wearing the remnants of a kebab, one or two sporting slight facial bruises from the early evening sparring whilst the excitement was still fresh… by 5am everyone’s out cold & best anyone can hope for is a highlights reel replayed ad nauseum after the main event finishes. Good times.

Not the blackest bike on here by any stretch, but it might have been a few years ago – age has to count for something right?

That also has a certain, “je ne sais WTF!” 8)

Not strictly a bike carrier but I used to have a cracking shitey old merc 230ce – doors didn’t lock, tyres were completely bald & the shocks were humped, used to bounce down the road like it was on hydraulics with the door panels flapping in the breeze as they were rusted so badly – a whole bike would fit in the boot if you took the front wheel off though & the back seat fit 5 allegedly.

There’s an ’03 Element in green very close to where I work in Glasgow. I quite like the look of it.

It was actually on Kelvin Way I seen one this morning – it was red/orange though so maybe they’re not as thin on the ground as I initially thought!

I’d have one if economy wasn’t a concern. A K24 will run on long after the vehicle it was bolted into has expired.

Yeah that’s the only downside really – probably be lucky to get 30mpg out of one… if does have a whole lot of awesome otherwise though.

I like the current crop of Giro shoes – the Alpineduro look good as you can obviously use them off road too but they’re not too “mx boot” looking…

I’m hankering after a pair of these (despite having a pair of dromarti ones I hardly wear as they’re too “nice” for commuting…)

Never had any mechanical stuff done at Clarkston (does seem more roadie oriented) however I had some rust on an old steel road frame repaired by Alex Cross(?) there recently – he used to build frames (Rattray’s?) & is apparently well regarded in that sense – it’s now freshly powdercoated & looks like new, so if anyone needs any metalwork done I can defo recommend them for that.

The more I look the more I like – they seem pretty thin on the ground though, i’ll probably end up with a Berlingo / Partner, not quite as handsome but still unconventionally attractive vehicles none the less…

Elements seem to have a bit of a cult following:

BINGO! other godawful looking cars I find attractive include the Pontiac Aztec (before Walter White made them cool) and that Chinese one that looks like a Rolls Royce melted onto a Lada Riva :D

From Wikipedia: In 2007, the Element won the Dogcars.com “Dog (ugly) Car of the Year” 8) … & it has a 2.4l petrol lump with no B-pillars – probably handles like a FXX – what could possibly go wrong?!

    I love it

    Edit: PHWOOAAAAAR!

Gear for me too – I do most of the stuff on my bikes myself but whenever I don’t want to spend a fortune on specific tools for certain jobs (or admit defeat with others) I happily hand it over to them.

I like their stuff – have an older Shutt l/s cross jersey which has lasted well with no issues, pretty similar in size & fit to a Rapha cross jersey I have, both in medium (i’m 5’7″ / 70kg / 39″ chest / 32″ waist) – not sure if the other styles of jerseys they do are cut different though

Yep – some absolute crackers in there, Field & Saffron are faves of mine but there area good few builders i’d never heard of there that have knocked out some crackers!

I’m off to phone the powdercoaters that have had an old steel frame of mine for a while – if it looks like anything in there i’ll eat my commuting shoes

Don’t know the exact system, but a cottage I stayed in up north a couple of years ago had one which pumped water from a nearby stream then through a few filters & uv treatment, eventually stored in a big tank somewhere – this was fit to drink so it is possible.

This entire system was new & was pretty much sealed from the when it left the stream, main concern from an old water tank would be nasties like legionella etc lingering around – might be better long term if the whole system was replaced to provide “clean” water rather than sticking a few filters on to an old system, no idea of cost on any of this though – someone on here will likely have done it & be better able to advise you on the technical ins & outs.

^ this, you should be protected via paypal whichever payment method you used (my personal example was very much a grey area), might take a few weeks to resolve fully though.

If you don’t get any joy through paypal it might be easier trying your card company if you used a credit card. I got stung for tickets (when ebay still listed them) a while back & paypal were next to useless as it was over their time limit for claiming, but as i’d used my credit card for the transaction I was still able to raise a chargeback & got the money back pretty quickly after filling in a couple of forms & emailing all the related correspondence over… the fact the guy claimed (in an email) his house had burned down destroying the tickets & he was waiting on the insurance payout to refund me did the case no harm though…

Random wildlife does it for me too – i’ve got 9 miles of rural cycletrack first thing in the morning before joining the road, if i leave early enough (before the joggers & dogwalkers rise) there’s allsorts on the path – loads of deer, rabbits, foxes & the occasional bird of prey – last week I went past big **** off buzzard sitting on a fencepost about 10 feet away which was impressive, I stopped to take a photo of it & the bugger actually waited patiently until I got my phone out, then flew away.

Also, I enjoy the fact that the first stint on the cyclepath takes a bit of energy out of me leaving me less inclined to go weaving in & out of traffic at top speed, sprinting to get through amber lights etc. and more likely to just plod along at a steady pace, which means I get to work less harassed than I used to.

Plus I just found a left over christmas cake in a filing cabinet & all the energy I burn off cycling allows me to eat pretty much whatever I like, whenever I like – so that’s got a big dent in it now. :D

Shimano have implied that the 42-11 cassette is 1x only (with HG-X11 specific tooth profile), reserving the 40-11 cassette for 2x and 3x applications.

I read it as the 42t max cassette was 1x only, unless they’ve edited it?

    edit: simultaneous repetition fail!

    Looks good though

I’ve had these 32mm Zaffiros on the commuting bike for a few weeks now & for the price they’re a decent option to try something slightly wider – 500 miles in & no issues – bought another set in fact, at that price even if I get 1500 miles out of them it’ll do : Zaffiro 3

And these on another set of wheels, wider again in either 35 or 37mm flavour Voyager Hyper

I have no connection to Planet X – i’m just cheap, like their tyres :D

I do ~37 mile round trip usually 4 days per week – half rural cyclepath, half main roads, determined to do it every day at least once this year but usually bad weather / headwind induced fatigue has caught up with me by Friday! Having Wednesday as a rest day works well for me just now, used to do 3 days per week & take Tuesday & Thursday off which was good to start with – this was coming from a 18 mile round trip before we moved & to be honest I was surprised at how quickly I got used to it – the good weather last summer helped massively.

Give it a bash & don’t beat yourself up if you simply can’t be arsed some mornings, likewise if the weather is horrible – i’ve tried doing it through heavy wind & rain but it’s really no fun being cold & wet for an hour + first thing in the morning, then putting wet gear back on at night to do the same & you end up burst the next day.

Yeah Coatesy – that’s them, decent enough wheelset, wide rims & surprisingly light too, were over £300 when new apparently… I picked them up cheap on ebay a while back though so don’t mind spending money on bearings / pawls etc. if that’s all it is. If the freehub is only held together by the cassette like rsl1’s experience it may be another matter…

    Cheers,

Hmmm – never actually thought of anything like that tbh, it still pedalled fine, albeit a bit crunchily – I’ll pull it tonight & get a proper look at it in case it’s humped & about to collapse on me altogether

I’ve had good results with Nigella’s flour-less ones, they use ground almonds though so if the nut omission is allergy related maybe try the hairy bikers ones instead – their luxury cookie recipe is great too, just add whatever you fancy… dark chocolate chunks & cherries work well. Removing the hash is a sensible thought too – it’s much easier to mix in some finely ground electric cabbage instead, allegedly
