The First Women’s Red Bull Rampage Is Underway

Got them on my Enduro, ridden a variety of stuff with them from regular Surrey rides, Golfie/Tweed valley and the Alps.
I’m 90kg kitted up.
Power and modulation are great, the feel at the lever is very good, the word that comes to mind is rich.
Overall, the number 1 benefit is that they make riding the bike easier. General trail riding they are just a nice brake to use, on steeps the feedback and control is superb and on long Alpine descents the fatigue levels drop right off. The Freeride at Pila is a long old punt down the hill, I rode it quicker, felt much more relaxed and while certainly not fresh at the bottom I was not having to stare at my hands to see if I was actually braking by the end, actually felt like another 5 minutes would have been ok.
I used a couple of different after market pads, one being Nukeproof, forget the other. Neither were bad though not as good as the semi sintered that came with them.
Uberbike are going to be doing them in the Race Matrix, they are currently in the testing phase so no firm time frame regarding when they will come to market.
MbnutFree MemberIf destroying Schwalbe SG on more than a random basis then it is possibly down to riding style.
I imagine sliding the rear, great for tearing nobs off and slashing tyres.
I run SG Rock Razor on the back for sliding around switchbacks, if away for 3 to 4 weeks in the Alps that will be upwards of 65000m of descent at pace with a 14st non finesse rider aboard. they will then go the rest of the year at home plus Scotland, Wales and Lakes etc.
A normal Majic Mary up front.Run high end inserts too.
I know my lad (19) tends destroy tyres and loves drifting the back around, when following I see pound notes flying out of my pocket.
Good luck but SG are pretty robust so not sure where I’d go after that.

Why rides better?
Why not rides differently and then give examples of how you feel it differs?
Interesting to hear that you feel it has the steel feel, makes me wonder how some frames have it and others do not.
Have you back to backed the Vibrocore bars with others? Do you feel a difference? I have found discernable differences between different carbon bars.
I am running 2.6 tyres and like then on a HT, with an insert and careful attention to pressure they feel good and the undamped nature of the suspension they offer is not to harsh in terms of rebound.

Have you since tried a DMR Trailstar and found it less suited to you than the Pace?
I find the DMR an ugly thing, the Pace is a little easier on the eye imho.
Loving my HT and very pleased I went ahead and put it together.
MbnutFree MemberI have just sorted the same sort of trip.
Fly into Lyon, then bus to Bourg.
Don’t know regards getting up the valley to Tignes, probably a bus but Bourg is better so why bother.
MbnutFree MemberHi all
Thanks for your replies.
I’ve ended up arranging to meet friends in Grenoble on the lunchtime so it’s a flight to Lyon and a bus to Grenoble.
Excited now.
MbnutFree MemberLush… and in my favourite colour scheme too.
A mate ordered some too, think I’ll pop round for a cuppa at the weekend!
Enjoy.
MbnutFree MemberHello Lee
No, no Debonair spring.
I think I’m going to go Smashpot, had a play on a mates coil fork today and I like the grip, felt good.
Will then see if the bike feels unbalanced.
Lardman, you don’t have an issue with the linear nature of the Enduro leveraged ratio with a coil? My concern would be that avoiding bottom outs might negate the plushness and grip that the coil is there for.
MbnutFree MemberSaw this thread resurrection and was all excited about seeing what it said….
I second ‘you what mate?’
By the way, it’s still a great destination and the cafe is awesome.
MbnutFree MemberAbsolutely, to be alive is nothing short of wondrous.
That said if you gave me a button that would eliminate all humans in an instant…. I’d press it.
MbnutFree MemberHad a feeling this might end up as an open ended wait.
Better to get a good set eventually than a bad set sooner I reckon.
Hayes went on the bike this week…. fingers are crossed that they feel good and don’t let me down.
Scotland in the wet next week, should be z good modulation test!
MbnutFree MemberLittle bit of a thread resurrection.
In the area early next week, any news on how things are looking at Mabie and tips on a good loop including plenty of off piste.
Many thanks.
MbnutFree MemberThe Rallon…. for my son, he needs an xl.
He’d rather have the Tues, which is a bargain but the wrong size.
I’d get the carbon Sonder for my mate…. needs a few changes but he’d love it.
Me, I’m happy with my current bikes…. mostly.
MbnutFree MemberLovely new stuff… great, love innovation.
Electronic shifting is a long way up the road for me, major trickle down required.
What I really don’t get is the whole… ‘£700, £1000 even £500 on a derailleur and shifter is ok’.
How? I spend a lot of money on my biking but why oh why would it be a great idea to spend that kind of money on consumable, vulnerable parts that get battered.
Bought all 2 NX derailleurs when my second xo1 got battered, the first one has done 3000 miles of mtb, flops about like a dick in a top hat but still works thanks to much handy work with my adjustables.
That said, good luck to any that buy and enjoy.
MbnutFree MemberI’ve used Salt Stick, they seemed to work on long hard multi days.
If on a hard riding holiday or a big Sunday ride I tend to drink plenty of gin and tonic when out…. works a treat.
MbnutFree MemberNo Frontier but a very happy Transmitter owner.
Excellent attention to detail and usability evident in the frame design.
Alpkit/Sonder guys very helpful throughout.
As mentioned above, Stuart at Bearbones knows his stuff and he is a very honest guy.
I’d say go for it.
MbnutFree MemberSometimes it’s worth sucking it up and just paying out for the solution.
I’d rather ride than spend my time bleeding a bleeding hydraulic Reverb.
Hopefully you’ll get it sorted, I’d rather you had £85 than me be right.
MbnutFree MemberIt’s cold, it’ll damn near stop altogether if it gets colder.
Reverb with a Wolftooth conversion works very well, actually let’s the Reverb be the post it should be.
MbnutFree MemberI think you’ll like it Bagstard, if so you can thank me for my sound feedback.
If not, I blame that Carl for making you do it!
I was toying with a coil but the Enduro is a tough one to get right, even with the Ohlins, so the Tractive was a good option for me.
I’d be interested in how you find it.
MbnutFree MemberI take a fairly belt and braces outlook on tyres.
That said I do think that a different approach for front and back works well.
Your MM Orange up front with backer rod should be fine.
Out back a SG HD with a better insert, something mid range like the Nukeproof thingy is good.
Nothing I hate more than having to back off to protect my wheels and tyres.
Good trip that, enjoy.
MbnutFree MemberSounds like you are looking for some that have a bit of a platform.
I have found the old Shimano DXs last forever. Got a 15 year old set that get swapped from various bikes and are still good.
I tried the DMRs but was disappointed, now trying the Nukeproofs.
MbnutFree MemberI hear what you are saying, I just hate having to ‘ease off’ to protect any aspect of my bike build. Pre inserts I’d be nervous tearing into a big old rock garden, now I leap into them as fast as I can handle.
I bike pack on a rigid bike with carbon rims and Thunder Burts, I love picking lines to keep things safe, so very much horses for courses.
Ideal world it would be great to have a second wheelset for the Enduro, some extra zip on certain terrain would add another dimension.
Goes off to look at wheels and tyres.
MbnutFree MemberHad mine done a while back.
Spesh Enduro 29er 2017 model.
I’m 14st plus kit, the standard shock tune was ok but never great.
It would bottom out on landings and hold up on square edges, it generally lacked a mid range.
Got the Tratcive jobbie done and I’m happy.
The bottom outs are eradicated or at least not noticeable.
Support throughout the stroke is good, I can now push the rear into corners and it pushes back, feed back is good too.
Overall it stopped me thinking about a big spend, in combination with bunging a Luftkappe in the Lyric with a Fast damper it has lifted the suspension properties of the bike to a point where I’m happy to keep it for another year.
MbnutFree MemberWeight is a factor but I’ve always found rolling resistance is what makes a bike feel draggy.
My wheel system must weigh a flipping ton…
29er Spesh Enduro which weighs 35lbs total with tools in SWAT.
Hope hubs on Stans Flow Mk3
Cushcore rear, backerfoam front and lots of sealant.
Magic Mary Orange Apex front, Rock Razor Blue SG rear.
Sunrace 11 speed 11 to 46 cassette.I’ll be riding Swinley on it tomorrow ;-D
The set up won’t change for Wales at the end of the month, the Lakes in March, Alps in the summer or Finale in September. I hate changing tyres.
Does it feel draggy…. nah.
Possibly down to Rock Razor, my godlike fitness or the fact I’m simply used to it.
MbnutFree Memberhttps://ebike-mtb.com/en/best-affordable-emtb-2018-eleven-bikes-review/
I’m not currently in the market for an e bike but I found this article interesting.
Personally I’d go with a sprightly FS over a heavy HT….
At the money you are looking at, I’d wake up with cold sweats if I dropped that much on a HT unless I was a genuine racer.
MbnutFree MemberOverpriced…. as are the holidays linked to.
I enjoy very comfortable trips to the Alps every year that cost about the entry fee but i’m there for a month. Have put together a few trips that have cost the people on them £500 for the week, including travel.
That said i’m not particularly well off so place a high priority on getting value for money.
Good luck to the organisers but it’s not for me.
To be fair, at that price and the bulk of the accommodation being in tents, asking for volunteers is a bit cheeky.
I’ve done several week long events, have volunteered myself and my son, him a few times so not just talking without experience.
MbnutFree MemberThere can be no definative inventor of the mountain bike, it evolved.
That said, the guys involved in the whole Repack thing did go on to lead bikes in the direction of what many of us ride today.
I have ridge bikes I go out for days at a time on, a HT I rag around my local woods and a big old FS I tear down bloody great hills on.
I **** love every one of them and rarely ever don’t enjoy a ride.
So I’m grateful for the development of bikes in general, for any and every discipline.
Coming on here and pissing on people’s chips says more about you than them.
Sun’s out, I’m off for a ride.
MbnutFree MemberWhen I got my Enduro last May my immediate thought was to change out the Guide R brakes.
They are the only thing left on the bike that hasn’t been tuned or swapped out, they simply work.
I still don’t love them and now everything else has been sorted I’ve started to look at some Code RSC but am yet to press the button.
So in short, get them.
Uberbike Kevlar and Race Matrix pads are both good. If you want more, Trickstuff Power pads properly bedded in are a proper upgrade.
MbnutFree MemberAlpkit are outstanding, including the Sonder bikes side of the business.
Exposure are good.
Hope are good.
Nextday.bike aka nextdaytyres are good.
My local UK Cycles, have a good relationship with the guys down there, works well both ways. Maidstone branch.
MbnutFree MemberWhat kind of trails are you riding?
What is it that the bike is doing/not doing?
Is it the right size?
To reach the limit you are riding it on the wrong terrain, have it set up poorly, have the wrong size or be a **** full on rider.
MbnutFree MemberLove this thread…
Stans Race is the best sealant.
Leyzene pump is great but there is a knack.
Hope have never made a good rim…. but they do make great headsets etc so why would anyone go to Superstar… it’s like taking up smoking now that we know what it does.
Rock Shox Revs, sounds a lot like they were not equalised during adding air, mate had the same issue, 10 minutes setting up properly made a world of difference though as mentioned, Fox if a hard charger.
Endura 500 sprayproof buggies, 10 muddy rides and dead… annoying.
DMR Twins for me… did ok but I was expecting more with their track record.
Just finishing a HT build, fingers crossed I’ll have nothing to add.
MbnutFree MemberI guess one of the factors must be the distance, time it takes to transfer. If an hour you can build in flexibility, if 3 hours, less so.
Next up will be the main sell, are you going for a week long holiday as 80% of your business?
If so Saturday to Saturday for your own sanity.
As mentioned though, you are new, Norway is an unknown quantity, personally I’d be far more likely to book a shorter trip of discovery right now than risk a full week.
As such Poly’s suggestion above of a Monday to Friday, Friday to Monday works a treat.
That way you commit to 2 airport runs a week but cover both the above and any week long bookings, they just come on a Friday or Monday.
Change your user name, a teenage user name doesn’t suit someone setting out on an adult endeavor and yes, it would make me think twice about booking with you.
MbnutFree MemberHi all
Thanks TT for the original route.
As you say Martin, it’s not a technical route, found another one that takes in Lyn Cowlyd that looks a bit more tech but mostly on the flat etc.
I know there must be some great cheeky stuff there, just not had time to go and explore… I’m in Kent so a long way off.
I have managed to sort a decent route at Cord y Brenin over the years so I think we’ll aim for a big day there, taking in a bit of cheeky. The other 2 days will likely be just the Mawr and my favourite, Penmachno… I know, will likely need a pack raft but I still love it.
Qtip, thanks for the offer, if you are free and up for a spin shout.
MbnutFree MemberIs that the Signal? Nice, how you finding it.
First garden not to get torn apart on here I reckon…
MbnutFree MemberI’ve got it in my routes and on my laptop… So nearly there, thanks.
MbnutFree MemberThanks TT…. will have a dabble and try to get that onto a device.
I’m hopeless but hoping my mate can do something with it.
