Thanks for that – have to say not interested in ever employing (ie faffing with) the ‘convert to gilet’ part as I have a couple of gilets and a ‘pacamac’ type really thin jacket for other types of UK weather…

Nice, these have always been very handsome frames indeed.

Check the obvious first i.e. frame mounts clean and lubed, cables run freely including noodle, linkages clean/lubed and are moving nicely and pads are adjusted to hit the rim squarely and not lipped or catching under rim. XTR Vs are normally damn good.

I still miss the black and gold boxes circa 1990 – those were the days!

Maybe it’s an age thing but like most kids who grew up in the 70’s I never got ‘into’ bikes or ‘chose’ MTB’ing like say tennis, or kite surfing or whatever.  Riding bikes was 100% the norm – as kids we all rode bikes from day one – every evening and in the hols/weekends from morning till night as soon as you were old enough to venture out alone – about age 8 to10 in those days!  Bikes, playing in the woods, climbing trees.

BMX came along around ’79 and that became my life for the next five years.  Slight gap then as cars took over but got my first MTB in ’89 and still doing it nearly thirty years on.  Got all sorts of bikes but no full suspension and only one of the bikes has (two) gears, the Brompton.  Just a cyclist really with a preference for ‘MTBing’.  Been a singlespeeder for fifteen years now.  As noted by another oldie above – I like simple bikes too – no gears, no suspension (except for my main bike – a 20 year old Chameleon), fixed wheels.  And well remember building ‘trackers’ too – road frames, ‘cowhorn’ bars, CX tyres – happy days.

    @horatio….

You don’t redish the wheel with these kits as it remains in the centre.

It’s 3mm not 5mm and yes the rear mech will be fine.  Front is +5mm each side, rear is +3mm each side.

Sorry guys – forgot to say strictly 27.5″ only.  Sorry no steel.  Been on the same Chameleon for ten years now but not looking for a 29er version or the previous models.

I bought two pairs of Endura Singletrack shorts (and a third Endura short – the other one they used to sell mostly back then??)  over a two year period about ten years ago and still wearing them all today!  Everything else now seems silly expensive, poorer design (less pockets, faffing belts rather than side tensioner thingies) and naff colours.

Ahh, love to but totally man-flued up at present and just about got the energy to type let alone propel a bike! ;)

Guessing a few of us have never been there before – any link or brief synopsis or a good overview of what’s available/facilities/parking/local tips etc?

    @thegeneralist

It’s a bit rich when you’re talking about buying a blooming holiday house there! ;)

As most people are aware of what a Cali is I was just saying that it works well compared to say flying/hotel etc – obviously campsites are relatively cheap and the bikes are on the back so easy to transport up the valley.  When there are four of you and four bikes then Eurotunnel/drive/camp works great is super flexible and is affordable.

FWIW I don’t even own a Cali – we have one car – a twenty year old Disco.  But for summer we do the same every year, buy the best deal I can find on an early/older Cali  bought privately in July, use it for a long Euro trip and sell it in September.  Buy and sell right with a bit of ‘wheeler dealering’ and it can even end up making a little money to go towards the holiday.  You get the main use of a camper for the summer for free.  :)  Always stick to Calis as they lose virtually no money at a certain age (or have been appreciating) and are super easy to sell on.  The alternative of hiring costs thousands.

Lucky fellow Andy – what a great place to live!  I must admit we were there more for climbing/via ferrata than biking but as you say it’s an outdoor action sports paradise with pretty much everything catered for and a superb lift system.  I think you have part of the UCI world championships starting at Area 47 this summer too?

OP – this is a good place to start for info:

Been there last two summers – staying at awesome campsite down the valley in Umhausen in a VW Cali with the family. If you like climbing, hiking, on and off road biking in stunning scenery with one of the very best integrated tourist set ups I’ve come across in Europe (Google Otztal)  then I cannot recommend it enough. Super friendly people too. Tourist offices have loads of info that is online too I’m sure. IIRC the main bike track above Solden (Teare Line) was a £500k construction?!

    [puts on smug face]

Been out in the garage today – shiny new BB in the Brompton and a new freehub body in the wife’s Kona SS.  Can’t complain, the original freehub that was in there has lasted since we bought the wheel new in ’92!

Which model?  The latest Deore M6000 is asymmetric 96mm BCD, same as latest M7000 SLX and XT etc.  This is the only Deore chainset with this BCD.

Thanks, very useful.  TBH weight is still important to me and 130 is the absolute max travel I want so if I can get away with a lower/lighter and cheaper 32 Reba that would be preferred.

Useful to know – not too expensive and a 34mm stanchion with 110 is going to be super stiff.  Pretty easy to do yourself if you check the vid above.

Thanks – what was the spec with the 2017 then?  Did they do one that covered 120/130 rather than 100/120 *or* 130/40/50?

If you can drop down to 120 then you need the air shaft assembly too:

Bought the Fox 34s today too – just got the Halifax CC transaction (always buy in local currency) = £183 delivered. Mad cheap.

And bought.  Man, never made a decision so fast.  Thought I better jump in as these things have a habit of suddenly going and it’s too late and a brand new fork with that spec for 2 year old used fork money is hard to resist.  I reckon they could be sold on eBay for 50% more anyway if the worst happens and plans change.

Well, a bit more research and it seems a 29er fork might just be the ticket for the frames I was looking at after all.

Any catch with that first one linked (Fox 34 Float 29″ 130 Grip Rhythm 51 Boost)?  Seems too good to be true for a new fork of that spec??

    Anyone running one of these?

Ahh, should add looking at 27.5″ and not wanting 27.5+ or 29er capability.

Just to say have to be flats as the bike is shared frequently and I could swap pedals but prefer to keep it simple.

Well slightly hypothetical as I’m looking at a frame and wheel purchase but unsure whether it will be 142 or 148 and quite likely to change again hence I want the flexibility to chop and change easily.

Would rather stick with regular Hope Pro 4 hubs too in 142 than the Boost specific models.

So has Boost effectively just kicked everything 6mm >>> to the right?

Not been on STW for a while but WTF has happened to this forum – it looks terrible and is very un-user friendly.

Frankly it’s all been downhill since the good old days of the browny/reddy/greeny forum:

See, lovely and clear – all topics lumped in together.  Love(d) it.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Just back from Excel today as it happens (London Boat Show) – was pretty busy and pleased to see that a few small boats were still available for the common man alongside the obligatory £2m Sunseekers etc. Nothing like the good old days of Earls Court in the 80’s and Excel is a shi*e venue but worth a visit nonetheless and the kids blagged some nice souvenirs so they were happy at least. :)
