I agree that some of the best fish and chips come from Yorkshire, but you can’t get decent mushy peas to save your life.

On a slight aside, I’m originally from St Helens (and no I’m not a scouser). If you want chips and peas, it’s called a ‘Split’. I was in a chippy in Milton Keynes and one of my mates in a drunker haze asked for a split and a fish. The shout of LARGE or SMALL came from the back of the shop to everyone’s surprise. The owner was originally from St Helens and said he hadn’t heard the expression for nearly 15 years. We got free chips that night!

Anyone come across Yorkshire Curd Tart? Can’t begin to describe what it tastes like but I think it’s yummy. My GF lives in Skipton, I’m from tuther side o’pennines but hoping to become an honorary Yorkshireman soon if they accept my visa application. It’s a pain having to get the words to Ilkley Moor tattooed on my arse though!

jackthedog Thought you might like to know that the best Black Pudding supposedly comes from Bury in LANCASHIRE. Can’t stand the stuff myself but Lancashire pride and all that!

, great news. Sorry to have put the cat amongst the pigeons, but I couldn’t believe that On One would stop making such a great, highly though of product; which is why I posted on GetSatisfaction.

I love my Inbred 29er (with Carbon Forks) and am seriously thinking of getting the Ti version when my budget will allow it. I’d hate to think that I’d have to build it with someone else’s forks.

@mavisto – hmmm… mailed On-One this morning and the response I got was “we are no longer stocking the carbon 29er fork” and a link to the Nuke Proof @ crc.

That’s really bad news if they are stopping the carbon forks as they always got rave reviews. They must have been one of the best sellers too.

What is going to be next I wonder?

The On One side of things does seem to have gone a little quiet now that Brant isn’t there.

According to this LINK, the on one 29er Carbon Forks should be due in, in 2 or 3 weeks.

I started a PGCE to teach ICT in a Secondary school. I lasted 3 weeks into my first teaching practice.

It wasn’t so much teaching as crowd control. Kids were awful and it struck me how little there was to actually teach with the restrictions of the National Curriculum.

I’d come from a background as a Software Engineer and naively thought that I’d teach proper computing. Not a bit of it.

Some of the GCSE students couldn’t even use the SUM() function in a spreadsheet.

As rhysboy1 suggested, if you have some free time, see if you can get into a few schools and see what they’re like. Don’t just go into one as you might get a particularly good or bad one.

My GF, on the other hand, teaches FE in a college. She loves it even though some of them are little sh1ts. The majority of them want to be there, and the ones that don’t, you can at least blackmail them into behaving by not signing their attendance sheet that gives them the cash.

Did anyone ever see some of the original proposals for Lee Quarry?

There were talking about moving the Ski slope there and having a branch of Ellis Brigham. It was also going to be used as an outdoor venue for music and theatre with restaurants and a bar.

The way I read the original Rossendale Leisure Trust web pages, it sounded like they had major plans for the whole of the quarry area.

Anybody know if this is still the case or has it been shelved due to the credit crunch. I’d be interested to know if anyone is close to the council and can confirm any other plans they may have.

Do it at the airport, or use cash machines when you go into a city/town. Pay for as much as you can by debit or credit card so you do not need so much cash

There was an article on the BBC a couple of weeks ago. They bought $500 and €500. There was nearly £50 difference between the best and the worst (for each currency). The worst were the airports!!!!!

Using a debit card is fine as long as you don’t mind paying up to £3 per transaction. Not bad if you’re getting a couple of hundred £’s out, but not worth it for a meal.

If you have time, get an Abbey or Post office credit card. They don’t charge for using them abroad.

Read Martins web site, it explains it all!

It’s got a pages that give up to date exchange rates plus how much commission they charge.

Lezyne Road Drive gets my vote if you are after really high pressures.

There is also the Pressure Drive (the one I’ve got on my 29er). Has a max pressure of 120psi but reaches 100 with ease.

Depends what you are hiding in them!!!

On a more serious note, unfortunately, it can take a couple of weeks to clear customs, but usually doesn’t.

I’ve had things in about 4 days in the past. A couple of days for them to check it out (I’ve had parcels opened before now) and a few extra days postage time once it has been released.

If you are going to use public transport forget the Rossendale area. I live in Helmshore (which is Ok) and work in Manchester. NO trains. Closest station in Accrington (can’t stand the place) but that line only gets you to Manchester if you go via Preston. Nearest Tram station is Bury, but the car park is full by 7 in the morning so forget that. Next closest is Radcliffe (horrible place) or Whitefield.

My GF lives in Skipton. Guess where I’m looking to go when I can find a job over there.

Join MAG and then get either their 2 wheel or 6 wheel Recovery Rescue. Covers you for Europe too.

You might have to pay a surcharge for classic bikes (didn’t want to say old), but service is great.

    Follow the MAG LINK

I emailed the the UK distributor of the ASCI guide and they don’t think that they will be producing a paper version of the DVD for the UK. Lidl might but that is up to the Lidl management.

The distributors did sugest the following guide, but say it’s not quite as good as the ASCI one as they don’t visit the sites every year.

According to the website, they do a smaller guide with less campsites in.

I agree with you though, how do you view a DVD while you are travelling?

I think I might email them and see if they are doing another book.

I bought an ASCI camping guide from Lidl about 3 years ago and have used it regularly on motorbike trips to Europe and Scandinavia. I don’t know if the book is still available, but you can order a DVD and look at the following website Eurocamping[/url].

It has been great when riding the motorbike. When we get fed up or too tired of riding, out comes the campsite book and we look for the nearest one that is on (or close to) our route. If you check out the website, they have photos and descriptions of all the sites and a list of the facilities.

So far in 3 major trips, we have only been turned away from one site because it was too full and I can only think of one site (a huge one in Normandy) that was noisy and a bit grotty (although the facilities were great).

I can certainly recommend the ASCI campsites and there are over 200 of them listed on the website in Switzerland.

If you can get hold of it, try Bag Balm. It’s original use is for cows udders, but it is well thought of in the American Cycling community and a doctor actually recommended it to me. And yes that was a human doctor and not an animal one.

Google bag balm and cycling and see what results you get.

Got myself one these BRACKETS and one of these TORCHES from DealExtreme and picked up a charger and a couple of batteries from ebay, all for under £30.

Stick two on your helmet and you’ve got 460 lumens.

    Cheers Kelvin.

Unfortunately there’s not much more info.

Built by Lynskey usually means they’re made well and will be super light, just don’t like the look. Reminds me of my motocross bars with the bottom cut off.

Just been having a look at those bars on Twitpic.

    Why???????????????????????

Does that design make them stiffer, cheaper to make (weld vs bend), lighter?

Not sure I get it. Afraid I don’t like the look either, makes them appear unfinished.

Got one from Merlin a couple of years ago. Does a good job and doesn’t make my back ache.

Can be a bit fiddly to get the clamp jaws the right size whilst holding the bike in the air. Open them enough to get the seat pillar in easily and they don’t always hold the bike tight enough.

Might have changed the design a bit by now though.

Years ago when I was a roady, I had someone do this to me.

If any of you know the area around St Helens, I was travelling up the Rainford by-pass on my normal training run out to Formby and Southport. Passed a guy, said hello and without a word he jumped on my back wheel. Towed him for the next 10 miles to Ormskirk and he never said a single word for the whole 10 miles.

Got to Ormskirk and he pulls up along side me with a big smile on his face. He then proceeds to thank me for the tow and said he was absolutely shattered. I ask him where he has come from, he tells me he’s a student at Sheffield Uni and thought it might be a good idea to ride home to Ormskirk.

After that day, I don’t mind giving people a tow, it is more likely to be me hopping on his back wheel these days.

Stiffness is good when it is in the place you need it and bad when it is in the place you don’t.

Forks, cranks, rear triangle, do you want them all to be the same level of stiffness? I don’t think you’d get me on that bike!!!

I could make you a VERY stiff steel frame, just give me a welding rig and some scaffold bar.

I could also make you a very flexible ally one. Where did I put my bacofoil?

Got myself one these Brackets and one of these Torches. Picked up a charger and a couple of batteries from ebay, all for under £30.

The torch is surprisingly small, so much so I thought they’d sent the wrong one when I saw the packet it came in.

Makes a great helmet light, and hardly noticeable when riding. I’m thinking about getting another set so I can put both on the helmet.

My friend got a set of Ayup’s and they are great lights. The set is awesome with all the fittings and the extended battery life, but I can’t afford that sort of money for the amount of night riding I do.

If you feel like heating up your soldering iron, check out some of the extreme lights on Candlepower Forum.

Been quite impressed with J E James recently. Even their email system to tell you that an item is out of stock and that the order as been cancelled is pretty quick. At least you can then start looking somewhere else.

Also had good mail order response from All Terrain, although I don’t like the shop. Went in looking for some M15 Crank Bolts and was treated like an idiot by the teen behind the counter.

Nice route planning. Do you have more details, like how many miles that loop is?

    Is it from a GPS?

    mavisto

There’s some of the national cycle way that runs from Rammy towards haslingden on a disused railway line (can’t remember what number it is). You could then head towards Edenfield and over the tops past the new wind farm or via Sandbeds Lane (on google maps) and then pick up Rooley Moor Road.

    Or

Head through Summerseat up to the A56 then use some of the roads that are named on google maps, like Bury Old Road, Bamford Road etc, (they might be named roads but I wouldn’t want to drive my car down most of them) to get across to Rochdale/Edenfield Road. You could then drop down into Norden (I used to live there) and use some of the tracks/farm roads to get to Rooley Moor Road that way. The only problem with this routes is the climb out of Rochdale on Rooley Moor Road. It’s a B*tch!

You might not want to do any circuits of Lee Quarry by the time you get there!!!

    mavisto
    Free Member

It’s a tough one to try and think of an off road route to Lee Quarry from Bolton. There are quite a few rough/farm tracks from Rammy up to Rooley Moor Road via Edenfield but nothing really direct to Lee Quarry.

If you by-pass Rammy to the north and go via Edgworth, you get stuck having to ride (legally) on road pretty much from Haslingden to Bacup. There is an off road route from the back of the ski slope in Rawtenstall to Waterfoot, but it’s about 10 miles compared to 3 on the road.

I’ve also remembered that there is a bridleway from Edgworth to Rammy round Holcombe Hill. It goes round the back of the TA Training camp where they used to hold the original Krypton Factor assault course.

There are a couple of leaflets available free from Lancashire County Council that list a few routes round Rawtenstall and some in the forest of Bowland.

    Where is your house?

The Rossendale Way is a 47 mile circular walk so officially a lot of it is footpath and not bridleway (if not all of it????).

You might want to see if the Pennine Bridleway is near your house too as that would be totally legal.
