Iain we have the same surname, spelt the same way – that’s quite rare!

Thx all. I’m not too bothered about it feeling weird, it’s indoor stationary cycling after all, it is weird.

May well go for rollers, tho it does occur to me perhaps the other half is more likely to use a turbo.

cos you’ll sweat like a Geordie in a spelling test

lol I repeated that to mrs jg and got a slap. her being from Chester-le-Street and all.

ta, does resistance on a roller not increase with a change of gear?

There’s a problem with car drivers thinking they have superior rights to the road, and some being inconsiderate too and passing and cutting very close for no reason, so some cyclists ride 2 abreast to push back on this.

But we’re not going to solve that problem here.

Matt – put the keyboard down and go polish the 456 instead. This way lies madness, you know I’m right.

I’m looking at getting either a trainer or rollers … is it viable to ride out of the saddle on rollers?

I’m a bit torn, what’s the deciding factor between the 2 for most people?

Yeah these are both face-palm “why didn’t I think of that” products. I thought the same of Crud Catcher in its day, these guys trump Crud I think.

Did 3 hours last night, plenty of roots, mud and steps, with one of these on my Charge Spoon. It did the job it was designed for and was still there at the end.

It’s perhaps a little more tricky to fit the first time, but perhaps more secure too as it has 4 fixing points to the rails not two. Really we are talking 45 seconds vs 30 seconds, it’s no biggie.

    How was your ride guys?

We did GB and ISC yesterday, the only real clag was around the southern perimeter of the hill as we looped back towards the youth hostel, finished up with a cheeky 3 in the Kings Head. (Beer festival on this weekend, got to be a do!)

& if you can’t face a ride, take your trainers and run to the top of Holmbury Hill and back. You’ll have earned a pint if you do that!

ps feels ‘new’ to me too!

I think with all the people Youtubing, writing on forums, setting up segments on Strava and Tweeting about SH

    ‘& setting up bike shops’

is it the one (that seems new or improved to me) that runs parallel with the lower part of the track you refer to?

    This I think.

I rode it on Friday and it was great fun. The wet doesn’t diminish it for me.

As for erosion, I think with all the people Youtubing, writing on forums, setting up segments on Strava and Tweeting about SH, staying in on a rainy day isn’t going to make any difference.

(Are you my friend who is a Blurred architect?)

    mattjg

Yup you wouldn’t want to ride that if you want to stay dry. I was up there on Friday, that’s how it was. It’ll be the same today I think.

th: it’s the one that’s up to the right if you’re riding the big track uphill between the 2 car parks on Pitch. I dno the names either. But we have totally different names for BKB and ‘Yoghurt Pots’ too. Can’t get with these newfangled names….

Isn’t it best to leave these trails to dry out?

Not sure it makes much difference, though I do go through the puddles rather than around them.

Anyway to answer your question, it’s sodden and puddly but not what I’d call a mud-fest.

Yup I read. We start Westcott.

Personally I’d chuck my bike in the car and see what happens. It’s daylight to 9ish and even when it’s bad around here it’s never that bad.

The Greensands drain well, they’re sandy rather than claggy clay. Take your bike, get wet, have fun.

We do a night ride Weds, mail me for info.

Glad to you have you with us Martin.

I’ve broken both wrists (separately) off my bike. If it’s any consolation, the physio hurts more than the break!

Do anything you can to keep the fingers moving – curl/uncurl etc.

My hunch is that looking at deaths only won’t be much benefit, they are probably very rare and won’t tell us much about how ‘dangerous’ MTBing is.

When I was in East Surrey ortho ward being treated for a broken wrist, that I broke MTBing, the surgeon told me that MTbers were their third most frequent patient source for trauma injuries, after motorcyclists and footballers.

My hunch is that, in terms of serious injuries, it’s pretty dangerous.

    Trousers: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/British-Army-Surplus-GORETEX-Trousers-DPM-Camo-/160778498561

I’m a 32 inch waist and bought 34, worked very well over Lycra shorts.

My mate had 90 quid-ish Endura full on waterproofs, they were heavier and he was no drier or comfier than me.

    HTH.

Wettest ride I can remember down here in Surrey, but lots of fun if one met it head on – ie went straight through the puddles (small ponds…) not around them.

I was dry and comfy in a Montane Velocity jacket, army surplus goretex trousers, and a half-buff under the helmet.

I bought the trousers after a tip I read on here and they are a huge win, only 20 quid-ish from ebay, light, cool, brilliantly waterproof and long enough to overlap the top of my boots to reduce boot-water ingress. Big win. Buy a size up from normal to allow for restriction-free leg movement.
