    Great magazine as always btw.

Good idea Stoo. I've been struggling to find 685 bars (which are what I have on other bikes and prefer) in standard diameter but will have another look.

    5' 11" and 32" inside leg and I ride a medium.

And with apologies for the slight hijack: I was thinking about switching to a shorter stem and wider bars (currently 90 mm stem and 610 mm carbon bars) to sharpen up the tight handling. Is this something that other people have done? Just wondering how the bike will ride with something like a 70 mm stem and c. 685 mm bars before I do anything foolish.

Fantastic bikes btw: just back from a fortnight of some of the toughest / best riding I've ever done in Oregon and the SL soaked it all up. It's done big days out all over the UK and most of the north Wales trail centres without any problems

    Good points from Crispedwheel there.

When we did Fruita and Moab I was on my Superlight. To be honest, we didn't do many trails that I wouldn't have been equally happy doing on my Simple–and the stuff in Fruita would be fantastic on a singlespeed. Both there and in Moab there were a fair few locals riding singlespeed with no problems at all. Some of the real steep slickrock stuff in Utah might be tricky but you can always stick a lower ratio on there if you're worried about it.

I have the top of a bottle of Sam Smith's as the top cap on my Simple–nice white rose on that

Is there any chance this thread could get back on track rather than degenerating into a clash-of-the-egos? It was starting to get interesting until it became all about SFB et al

Extracts from the report taken from the Guardian website:

This is paragraph 3.102 from the "principal conclusions" report:

As to the further shooting in Rossville Street, which caused the deaths of William Nash, John Young and Michael McDaid, Corporal P claimed that he fired at a man with a pistol; Lance Corporal J claimed that he fired at a nail bomber; and Corporal E claimed that he fired at a man with a pistol in the Rossville Flats. We reject each of these claims as knowingly untrue. We are sure that these soldiers fired either in the belief that no one in the areas towards which they respectively fired was posing a threat of causing death or serious injury, or not caring whether or not anyone there was posing such a threat. In their cases we consider that they did not fire in a state of fear or panic.

    And this is paragraph 3.113:

We have no doubt that Lance Corporal F shot Patrick Doherty and Bernard McGuigan, and it is highly probable that he also shot Patrick Campbell and Daniel McGowan. In 1972 Lance Corporal F initially said nothing about firing along the pedestrianised area on the southern side of Block 2 of the Rossville Flats, but later admitted that he had done so. No other soldier claimed or admitted to firing into this area. Lance Corporal F's claim that he had fired at a man who had (or, in one account, was firing) a pistol was to his knowledge false. Lance Corporal F did not fire in a state of fear or panic. We are sure that he fired either in the belief that no one in the area into which he fired was posing a threat of causing death or serious injury, or not caring whether or not anyone there was posing such a threat.

Dont nobody tell me they were not shot at that day. When i joined my Battalion there were still guys in the unit who had been there.

Why did no one bother to tell the Saville inquiry then?

At that time the Army were engaged in an armed conflict much like they are now and it worries me that actions taken "under fire" could be scrutinised so far down the line.

    They weren't "under fire"

A large number of those shot were running away and were shot in the back

    @ Andy RT

If Greenpeace and friends of the earth and all those middle class pointy wagging finger type organisations supported technical development for realistic alternatives, rather than ill conceived hijacks of oil platforms and other stupidity, then we would be in a better place right now.

Sierras Nevada Fat Tire is great post ride beer (ahem, if you're of that inclination, I'm not encouraging it or owt)

    .

Fat Tire isn't a Sierra Nevada beer–made by the New Belgium Brewing Co. in Colorado.

It's great after a long day finishing up with Joe's Ridge in Fruita under the hot desert sun.

That would be great–thanks Mark. I've fancied giving these a try for a while. Once it dries out a bit out here I think they might be pretty good.

The only "difficult" moments are when your geared mates slow down at the bottom of a climb causing you to lose momentum, which is a pain. The answer to that therefore is to always be in front.

Too true. Though I find shouting 'elite single-speeder coming through' normally clears them out of the way sharpish. And makes them even more aware of your superiority.

Another case of 'political correctness gone mad' as the last refuge of someone incapable of critical thought…

The case is about far more than sexism and grading female students for their attractiveness. It's about the capacity of a group of privileged male students to create an atmosphere in a small college in which women feel uncomfortable and excluded. The email list is the tip of the iceberg–they've been sexually predatory, abusive and often aggressive in their behaviour towards women. These places are really small communities and even a few idiots like these lot can make a hell of a difference.

Yeah Tuesday night on the east side of Oxford with a 7.30 start. It's vaguely meant to be an exploring ride so you might have to put up with the odd wrong turn and dodgy bit as well as the usual muddy singletrack in the woods.

Email in profile if you want to get in touch.

@ MetalHeart Is that Joe's Ridge in Fruita? Amazing stuff…

I'd go for the Sovereign trails in Moab. Intense and full-on fun for as long as you can stay out there. Hmmmmmm………………

Sorry. My mind wandered off there.

only bmx trail riding available locally. well you can ride a mtb but its a bit crap going round in circles on the flat.

Have you actually been to Oxford Van Halen? I guess you've spent too much time on that tour bus to actually look around you…

Munque-chick's your best bet for the inside knowledge on local neighbourhoods!

Cowley Road is getting more and more studentified at the moment. It's better the further out you go — east of Magdalen Road for example — or if you go up the hill slightly on Divinity / Southfield / Hilltop Roads. The area between Iffley Road and the river is really nice but might be expensive. Once you get past the 30s identikit stuff there are also some really nice pockets like Florence Park and parts of Temple Cowley (around Crescent Road and Temple Road).

And like Munque-chick says, we ride every Tuesday night and most weekends. Tuesdays alternate between Shotover and Boars / Cumnor Hill on the west side of town. Anyone that says there's bugger all riding just hasn't taken the time to look properly.

Email in profile–more than happy to offer any more thoughts if it would be helpful.

    Cheers

gay man calls another gay man a queen your fine with it, straight man does it and he's a homophobe.
    get a grip.
bet you used to be the one at school that would tell teacher.

Or to put it slightly differently: black man calls another black man a '****' and you're fine with it, white man does it and he's a racist.

    Yes.
