I did it with two mates this year: fantastic experience despite the bloody awful weather. You can take it as seriously (or not) as you like; be as competitive (or not) as you like. You can push on hard and be completely self-sufficient or *coughs* stop off in the chippy in Mach for lunch. It’s a great event with a really good atmosphere. Highly recommended. All being well I’ll be back next year.

With a more waterproof bivvy bag.

I’m a university lecturer and can confirm that that ism is most definitely NOT acceptable.

Thanks for all the details: it’s really helpful! I’m 5′ 11″ so a medium sounds about right. Whereabouts are you?

Well said Sue: I agree with you completely that the drip-drip of sexism (and homophobia) on the forum can be very alienating indeed. I’m sorry that you feel the need to walk away from the forum though.

They all seemed to know the words though.. is that language a widely spoken one then? Do Maoris understand it all without having to learn it?

In the same way you didn’t have to learn English?

I have just had “Dewali” explained to me (light banishing evil and so forth) and have been wished a happy one. When asked what I thought, I said: “Well, I’m English, so I like to reserve my fireworks for November the 5th, when we celebrate THE BURNING OF THE CATHOLIC”!!

So someone who is ‘English’ can’t celebrate Diwali? And ‘we’ are all Protestant?

I hate to say it but I’m with Elfin on this one.

The stuff to the left of Phoenix Parkway as you head up the hill is still there I think–it links up to the old works sections towards Flixborough.

Last time I was back I noticed a lot of new MX stuff down the escarpment on Burton Hills. As you head north from Burton you pass under a row of electricity pylons: there’s a gate on the left that the bikers use on a weekend and which seems to drop down into some singletrack. Not had chance to try it out yet though.

Cheers Dave. My regular route heads down from Winterton through the mines, through the back of Normanby Park then Flixborough and down / back up to Burton and down to the bottom before climbing back up past the caravan park and onto the hills. From Alkborough there’s a decent BW to Coleby and then back up. If I’m on the cross bike it’s good to head along the Humber bank to Wintringham as well.

Forest Pines golf course? I think I know where you’re talking about. We used to ride a bit in Broughton woods but it sounds like I need to do a bit more exploring when I’m back at Christmas!

Where did you end up? I’m from Winterton originally and my parents still live there so I get back a fair bit. There’s some decent stuff on that side of town but I’ve never ridden closer to the works.

Really sorry to hear that chipsngravy: hope the operation goes well and you can get back on the bike and get your life back. I’m still sore – sometimes worse than others and occasionally in a way that limits my mobility. Still working at the stretches and some basic core exercises. I’ll see the osteopath again next month and see what he says. I have to take it very easy off road but on road and on the turbo trainer is going pretty well. Slow and steady…

    @ kudos

Oh jesus another know it all.
How many of you have actually manipulated your bodyfat, while preserving muscle and vice versa?
Probably only the few on here who have been into weight training and bodybuilding and understand the difference between losing ‘weight’ and losing ‘fat’

Or alternatively someone that does this kind of thing for a living…

I am sure a medical professional will be along shortly to tell you the facts

This is getting kind of old. Not that it was very funny before it aged.

I guess the cut and paste saves the need for independent thought. Seems like borderline bullying to me though.

You might want to revise down what ‘to be fast’ is. A decent marathon time, sustained over 26.5 miles, would be, what, 8 mins 20 secs or so per mile?

Maybe if you were going to start commenting on what somebody else calls fast you should have been a bit more ambitious in your definition so as to not look quite so silly!

Or perhaps you should just read what he said in the post: ‘decent’ rather than ‘fast’. 8 20 pace will take you around in under four hours which counts as decent in my book. Or were you just looking for an opportunity to willy wave?

I need to re-iterate – it’ll be WAY easier and more fun if you are doing it right.. Read up and watch some videos on youtube.

…or don’t overanalyse everything and just get out there and see how it goes.

I was in the kitchen at the time
    Then..
I was at my boyfriends flat at the time
    Then..
My boss at the winebar where I worked did it

Whilst in for questioning at the station she decided to do cartwheels. Yeah, if she was normally-minded wouldn’t she be shell-shocked and ‘oh a housemate has just been murdered’/****/crying etc.

Do you know how you would respond if your flat mate had been killed and you had been arrested for murder? You might be better off leaving your assumptions about the ‘normally-minded’ at home.

Berlin is supposed to be excellent: flat and fast. I’ve done Florence (good course; fantastic city; painful cobbled streets at the end) and Dublin (great atmosphere; bigger hills and some boring stuff around the Stillorgan Road). I don’t think I’d fancy London at all.

Piss off back to Germany Ed.

I’m sorry but I think you’ll have to explain this to me. Surely you’re not suggesting that Ed isn’t British? Because the last time I checked he was. And if you were trying to make an oh-so-clever reference to Ralph Miliband being a Jewish refugee in the 1940s… well then it might be worth knowing that he was born in Belgium.

    Ignorant and stupid.
