I had a similar dilemma recently when a garage quoted £2k for a clutch replacement. My van is only worth £3.5k tops. The fact that we had the cam belt done, air con re-gas, new starter motor, brakes in the last year weighed my decision more towards getting the work done.  I’m of the opinion of if you’ve spent money on it and it is good sold vehicle that you know, then it may be worth getting it back on the road. I don’t like throwing stuff away. Luckily spoke to another garage who quoted £650 and said it wasn’t a dual mass clutch.

All depends though on the replacement engine costs labour etc. Can the garage source a second hand engine from a breakers yard. Anything new from the dealer is going to be crazy money. Also it’s not worth the labour stripping the current engine down to for example replace the block. And there’s the added cost of putting it back together stretch bolts, head gaskets, belts, etc. will escalate.

I loved D&T or CDT as it was called then. We did all sorts of dangerous stuff, Brass and alu casting, lathe work etc. I got an A*.

Sadly the way things are going we will end up with the teacher demonstrating down the front of the class without the kids having a hands on experience.

Unfortunately were dealing with young persons who are less experienced, need more instruction, training and supervision and are likely to arse about.

Fingers and nails will grow back and I guess the ops son will now be well aware of the hazards of the sander.

So plenty of space for air circulation under the shed floor.

I wouldn’t have thought a wooden shed like that would be sealed enough to get condensation.  Condensation doesn’t tend to form on wood only metal sheds. Likely to be some ventilation through the albeit small gaps around the door, between the panels etc. Unless you have insulation and or a membrane lining the inside and the roof.

But no harm in putting in ventilation and seeing how it impacts the moisture levels. My money is on water getting in there. Get in there with a torch and have someone spray a hose pipe over the top.

    Does the shed have guttering?

What’s the shed made of? has it got a box profile steel sheet roof? or is it a standard garden shed. If so I would say there’s a leak.

I have, it’s great, as above swapped the stock fork for a carbon. Geo is good and I don’t find it overly heavy, tubing is butted and it has the steel frame compliance. Frame is nicely made. Simple work horse bike for touring, commuting, winter rides etc.

I’ve tried things you stick up your nose, stick on nose strips, sleeping on my side, nose decongestant spray but still snore. Don’t like the idea of those mouth things. my snoring comes from the back of the mouth/ throat, don’t think those mouth things go back that far. Next thing for me is to try and loose some weight I guess, i’m  over the average weight for my height. I occasionally sleep in the spare room it gets unbearable for the OH.

I’ve had issues recently with water in the diesel filter and sensor. 1.6hdi Peugeot so same engine.

I kept resetting the fault code, draining the filter but it would re appear and stop the engine starting.

Changed the filter but didn’t screw the sensor in full so it won’t detect. Seems to have cured it.

May be the same on yours

I have this also, diagnosed as seborrhoeic dermatitis. Steroid cream from the GP and Double Base cream helps a lot.

I would go with Cotic, the Solaris Max. In my opinion they have the geometry dialled in. I have a Bfe Max and a First gen rocket Max both great bikes. BFe took a bit of getting used to with the longer wheelbase but now I love it. Solaris would be great. I had a first gen solaris 29 before which was a great ride.

Light sanding with wire wheel attachment on an angle grinder should sort that in no time. This will get into the nooks and crannies of the wheels as well.

Primer with red oxide and some hammerite or other silver spray to make it look tidy. Job done.

As said looks like there some galvanising on there. Just paint over or treat just the rusted area. Galv is worn enough to allow primer to stick to it. Could always cut a sheet of ply to line the base of the trailer as a sacrificial layer to protect the bed and prevent paint being scraped off

Pallets are the way forward, there are loads of them around FOC, just need a van or roof rack to collect them. I’ve just built a shed from them used for base, walls and roof. They need to be checked for squareness as none are. Measure corner to corner and adjust then add some screws to firm up. I did spend some cash on angle brackets, deck screws 100mm and 150mm length some structural timber to make a frame for the base and for door frame. All in has probably cost me about £300 for fixings and timber, a UPVC door and frame which was £100, around £40 for a roll of breathable roofing material, plus I need to factor in the corrugated roof sheets which I haven’t bought yet. It’s a proper sturdy a 3.25 x 1.8m shed that would be hard to break into. Used pallet strips for the cladding. Will also need to buy some timber treatment / stain. Call it £600.

Just spent £2k on a replacement rubber over Osb board roof for my garage. Originally roof tiles and felt.

I’d get the asbestos corrugated removed by a suitable contractor. Make sure they don’t dump it in a local layby.

I have a Peugeot Expert ex-mobility. Low mileage for age. No additional insurance cost. So far it has worked out a good buy. Depends on which ramp conversion system the vehicle has. Some systems are less intrusive on the rear load space, exhaust and chassis. On mine ramp and conversion is confined to the rear quarter of the space. No change to the seating layout, fuel tank etc. When folded up has no impact. Ramp and straps are handy for loading and securing bikes.

Pallets could be used for the base and walls. Loads can be found around industrial estates.

I did an NVQ evening class at a local college around 15 years ago. Welds aren’t pretty all the time but as above I don’t do it often so don’t keep the practice up. Have an arc from Lidl and a Sealey gasless mig. Do the job for most projects that I need to do.

If it has sliding side doors turn it into a crew van get some seats off ebay and you can buy a window kits with the glue. Measure 20 times and cut once when cutting out the metal for the windows. That’s what I did to my Citroen Dispatch. I picked up the factory seats which matched up with the reinforcement in the floor. A few large bolts and some carpet sorted it. Had to remove the bulkhead behind the driver. Need to fit seat belts which came with the seats.

Vans can be expensive mine is having an engine replacement at present after it seized before christmas. Oil rarely needed topping up approx every 8 months and I had topped it up the day before but hadn’t changed it for a while. Cambelt had been changed. Will probably end up with a bill for £2.5K. The power steering pump went on my old van luckily when we had got to our camp site in Lake Garda. The replacement Pumpi Libre cost around £1200. I’ve had two EGR valve failures (old van) leaving me stranded on the side of the motorway. I’m contemplating returning to a people carrier but the van is handy.

I’ve been looking at roller doors for my garage. Had a quote from Action doors. They’re doing deals for under 2.5m width. I’ve used Industrial Door Services in the past with no issues. I’m in the Caerphilly area. They were reasonably priced for the size of the door 01633 853335 There’s also Gorilla Doors. Plug in using a 3 pin plug and socket.

I found them a little low with a flattish 35mm stem. I’ve just altered my set up to a short but high rise stem. 60mm with around a 35 degree rise. Transformed the handling. I can now pop the front end up and wheelie making the ride livelier.

Just built mine up with a non boost. Chain ring is very close but not touching. Plan to put a spacer in the chain ring side of the bb to increase clearance a little.

Presumably went from 26″ wheels to 27.5″ as well as going from FS to HT. 27.5 will take longer to get up to speed but will carry it for longer. 29er will be different again.

My Solaris (not the current version) is a great bike. It’s nimble yet has a long enough reach to be stable.

How about gabions. No need to worry about mixing loads of cement just face front with stone and fill the rest with rubble bricks blocks what ever you have available. No need to worry about foundation either. Looks like your ground is well compacted. They come in all shapes and sizes. I used 1m height x 2m length x 0.5m depth.

I’ve had a few over the years and used on various builds. All have been sturdy and have not broken or cracked. Currently using a Toseek (or something like that) branded pair on my bootzipper. I’ve ridden down a few rocky descents and touch wood they haven’t broken. I’m not light so would say that I’m a good tester.

I’m loving my Bootzipper at the moment. Geometry is great, reach / top tube length is just right. Reminds me of a Kona Unit. Picked up my large at the right time more due in this month I think.

That’s definitely a rat. Used to be able to get the rat man in FOC (but not mice) through the local authority. With cuts in funding not sure that they provide this service any more but worth checking with your LA.

Reach wise my 19″ Payoff is similar to my 20″ Titus Fireline but not quite as long as the Cotic Solaris (version before current so not longshot). Top tube length 590mm for Payoff and Titus, 600 for the solaris. None of which are modern geometry long shot. Would argue that for bike packing or less gnarr trails you wouldn’t want longshot type geometry although the Payoff copes with the gnarr well in my opinion. I’m 6ft and the 19inch fits me fine with a 50mm stem its not cramped. Yes 27.2 post is limiting but the choice for 27.2 dropper posts is getting better.

I rode full speed into a dog poo bin while riding back from the pub a few years back. Had forgotten my lights and that the bin was there. Front wheel hit the bin and I went flying over the bars landing a few meters down the track. Dusted myself off, checked no one saw me and got back on the bike.

Chain tensioner works for me. Had to cut a notch out to clear the drop outs on my Titus fire line. I’ve run this set up for a couple of years now without issues.

Love riding ss in the winter mud. Low maintenance don’t have to worry about mech getting torn off etc. Need to maintain fitness to get up the steeper hills around here but great for messing around in the woods.

Tried an ebb on a payoff and didnt have much luck. It kept slipping so I switched to a modified tensioner. There are no bolts on the shell to clamp it in place. I get the best results from the gusset tensioners.
