We did up our house a few years back – the hall has a 6′ long stretch of ‘door mat’ material wall to wall for exactly this event – if I ever do up a house again it will have the same, or some tiles/wood that can be mopped.

And one final thing on the topic………three folk died yesterday in a tragic accident doing something they love…………how many folk died yesterday in Britain because they’d spent a lifetime smoking, or drinking too much, or being junkies, or because they were fat slobs who never took any exercise? I’ve no idea, but let’s say it was 20. And 20 the day before, and 20 the day before that etc…….why isn’t it headline news in every paper?

I agree Kenny – I would not be out in the hills if it were not for an element of risk. Far rather a life lived than a life wasted on the sofa.

And as a sometime hillwalker I’d be mortally embarrassed if I had to be rescued by helicopter.

What a stupid statement! Guess you never called the parrafin budgie out then? I have, and trust me, its no embarrassment, its a relief – it saved my mates life and I and he are forever indebted.

I am waiting for someone more informed than BBC scaremongering reporter and wind up mtb forum before I judge. I am up there this week for a job interview with a respected outdoor center – they may well have a better informed view.

I used to have one of these – great bit of kit, waterproof, bosh proof and easy to use. Survived 3 years as an outdoor instructor, in rivers, mud, rocks etc.

I am surprised there is not a bigger market in waterproof/bosh proof phones.

    Good point, well made

He was an idiot for riding too close, your a **** danger for almost causing an accident!

I agree – locking back wheel with someone that close IS aggressive – a turn round and a chat about why that was not a great idea would have been better.

Awesome planes – I remember lying in long grass at the end of Waddington runway as a kid, visiting my grandad, and having Vulcans come in 30-50′ above us to land, or standing up on end to climb as they took off – what a noise…..

I agree with Hora on this – the VWs *are* good, but there is a certain snobbery/fashionista/overating going on with them – I have a few mates with them, one is upto 220k in his, but he paid a lot for it….

He could have had a van half the age and miles, built by Toyota or Ford or Mercedes…

Rob – my neighbor is looking to sell a Hi Ace in absolutely fantastic condition (55 plate diesel)he bought it as he finished as a builder, its been used mainly for shipping family around in, washed and polished weekly etc etc – its his pride and joy – he wants / needs a people carrier, he was bemoaning he was only offered £3k trade in…

    Shall I enquire?

Second Endura – I had Polaris for a few jackets previous, and the Endura Convert I now have is much better.

Generally I would say a mtb specific jacket would be better.

Tarps is where it is at – mine is huuuuge (used for open canoeing) but my mate has a smaller one. They are so adaptable for all sorts of weather, conditions and sites, and well worth the weight. Decathlon do them for £19.99.

Combined with a bivvibag, apart from proper ‘high ground’ camps, they rock!

I needed one for a Niner – same as most Orange’s are though – and tried three main Orange dealers, and Stif (Niner) and none hand any in :| – so an order to BETD was placed.

We have LG direct drive one – so far (5 years) not a wobble or complaint…family of 5 so on daily.

Looked closely at Mazda 5 (very nice, great doors, slightly small middle seat, what we wanted, bl**dy expensive second hand and no cruise control…), Verso – (great build, nice kit, good value, bland as a bland thing and didn’t drive quite as nicely I thought, but mrs_oab struggled to see over dash as she is only 5’….) and finally the Touran that we bought (boring, but well put together, practical and stonking good value second hand, but some annoyingly crap design with folding seats (rear and middle) that means it not *quite* as good as the others, and silly lack of rear speakers FFS! – we paid £7k for 3 year old 20k ex motability car…)

If I had the money, the Mazda (but it needs cruise…), sensible and boring Touran won – we now have 6 friends and neighbours with them and no complaints – ours has now done 20k since July, does 53-55mpg on a run with just me, but drops to 47/49 with family on board.

6’1" and on a Large – with an ickle stem (60mm I think) – fits nicely.

Drop an email to Niner about sizing – they are very helpful!

yes – and they were fine with it. Its vents that they are fussy over (so a loosing air tightness, and with it heat…..) – but ours was small enough not to need a vent.

Niner look lovely but the steel frames are sooo expensive now – £799!!

They are steep – but very well made…and worth it (says a man who paid half price….)

    What insulation?

The roof – you can see underside of the tiles and the battens across the roof that the tiles are on?

The issue here is not heating – but our atrocious UK insulation standards. I have just spoken to a self builder who use out stuff, and even in the recent -15 near Aviemore, they only turned the heating on for two hours each morning…and used a woodburner in the lounge. They have data-loggers, and the house averaged 19.4*c and it dropped to 16.1* on a cold night…

We all will need to start insulating old houses ASAP. Remember, insulation is (relative the future gas increases) very cheap at present. Draft proofing even more so.

We have done this on a few house – we used http://www.newton-membranes.co.uk/System500.htm every time (I have two and a half rolls and all fixings for sale if you want…). I would always use something like this, then finished how you want.

Min ht IIRC was 2m, with a lower ‘area’ allowed (but not clearly defined). You also need means of escape to fire regs – we ended up with fully opening escape windows (off the shelf sizing) and built permanent steps (or in one case as desk) as a way of climbing up and out.

As TT says – forks are mainly QR. I have Reba 29’s, but I do like the look of the Manitou’s on CRC. My older Reba’s do twang a fair old bit – stopping 14st of me on a rocky bit, its not surprising something flexes, but it is noticeable. A stiffer (As you suggest bolt through) would be a winner for me.

I got 18Bikes[/url] in Hope to make up some wheels – XT on DT Swiss, they did me a great deal, certainly only a few quid more than the On-One wheels, but seemingly lighter, tighter and some free truing should I need it. A year of Peak bashing on my EMD and they are tight.
