Have you ruled out fixed wireless internet? This sort of thing: https://www.al-technical.co.uk/wisp
MatFull MemberCan’t say I care and I’ll wave them goodbye.
Eventually someone will replace them who’ll work (begrudgingly or not) under and fairer and more sensible
I don’t think they will, it will bring forward decomissioning dates, we’ll lose the infrastructure and then be wholly dependent on imports. We’ll lose the tax take on domestic production.
MatFull MemberWhen my wife and I did this we drove to Tyndrum and left the car there, we got the train from lower Tyndrum station to Oban, then ferry to Barra. We cycled up to Stornway then back to Tarbert, ferry back to Uig on Skye, then got the Mallaig ferry and took the train back to Upper Tyndrum station.
MatFull MemberI do find it uncanny how stw has a knack of throwing up questions I’ve been thinking about posting on but not getting around to! I’ve been meaning to ask about this for ages! Also a mildewey smell when the machine gets left when we go away for a week. It seems to have been remedied by doing more frequent 90degC washes (towels each week). But watching with interest. I’m mid-30s (and have been doing all my own washing since leaving home for uni before you say) and it seems like this has only started being an issue for me in the last couple of years. Not sure if it’s connected to using method washing liquid (that’s perhaps the only thing that’s changed).
MatFull MemberIt snowed today in NE Scotland, that’s all.
Just realised this thread hadn’t made an appearance today and that needed rectifying…
MatFull MemberI’m 5’11” on a Medium, I test rode a friends Large with a 35mm stem and decided it felt too big. Brant was suggesting the On One quoted sizing was off. Both that and my Edit are too small for me according to something I read in the magazine here though…
MatFull MemberThanks! I almost wrote paging scotroutes in the OP! The OS maps seem pretty out of date, the Coire Fhearnasdail gravel tracks were very nice but don’t feature at all on OS, they didnt look that new either!
MatFull MemberWent to check my briskers, I’d say I’m normally a M or L for gloves and I have a pair of M that fit fine.
MatFull MemberIf it’s not to bad weather wise take a walk round and look at the street art?
MatFull MemberThere seems to be a big push (and progress) on cold cases at the moment up here in Scotland:
I wonder what’s enabled it, detectives having less to do during Covid or something?
MatFull MemberTaaaaake meeee to the magic of the moment on a glory night…
I take it you’ve listened to the wind of change podcast? (Guy investigates whether winds of change was a CIA soft power operation)
MatFull MemberHuh! I thought JPG was dead too? I wonder how the rumour started?
Edit – I didn’t think it was a recent death either, I thought it was 10+ years ago! Happy to hear he’s still alive! Ahh Fond memories of early teenage years and Eurotrash on Friday. I think “Crossing Continents” on R4 is missing a trick not having regional UK accents to do the translations of non-English interviews and comments…
MatFull Member3rd-ing what the others have said…
I’d be wary of doing too much driving and getting a few of bits of not a lot across the country. The distances aren’t as far here but the volume of traffic can make it heavy going especially the further South into England you go.
MatFull MemberI’m fairly sold on getting an SSD, I’ll get that ordered!
Any thoughts on diagnostics for what’s causing the high usage though? I do fire up task manager when it seems particularly slow and look at what the big ticket items are in % terms for disk use. It generally seems to be windows processes I think (service host and that sort of thing – not exactly sure what they do). I was initially concerned but each time I’ve googled one it’s turned out to be a legit windows process. Not saying any of that definitively though so keen to hear any better suggestions on how to check! I’d like the peace of mind that I’ve not been compromised somehow even if I do plan on reformatting the drive (or doing a straight up swap with the SSD).
Also any tips on removing dust from the inside the machine? I had it open tonight to check out the slots and it was pretty dusty! Just hoover it out?
Thanks again for all your thoughts and advice!
MatFull MemberGreat! Thanks all!
I noticed a massive difference when I sorted out my laptop to boot from the SSD vs the HDD, I was just worried here that as its a lower spec machine I might just quickly hit the next bottle neck.
I don’t understand the drive standards, is it a given swapping out the HDD SATA with any SATA SSD will fit? or do i have to check the slot and how much physical space is available in the casing?
MatFull MemberI saw a WG1WGA sticker on a Fiat 500 in Aberdeen, I wondered if it was meant ironically/a troll.
MatFull MemberInevitably I get this done, feel dead pleased with myself, and *then* out comes the extra bag of random clobber, bag of food, couple of loose pairs of shoes, etc. It does my head in but there is no escape from it so I’m learning to be more zen about it as the years go by.
Yeah Mrs Mat always has to have a couple of bags in the passenger footwell (granted some of it is food and drink to pass over to me and the kids)
MatFull MemberYES!!! So much of of this I can relate to! We did our annual trip down to Devon at the start of July but it’s always down to me to load the car. I’ve certainly taken photos of the packed boot to know how I did it on the outbound journey (I also emptied the contents onto the drive and took a picture when we got back so I can remember what we took for next year…). My big frustration is having multiple bags 90% finished so I can’t start loading.
MatFull MemberThanks for sharing everyone , I think it was Ciprofloxacin they were offering but Dr suggested it’d be quite nasty so I avoided.
From the descriptions of a Varicocele and how people have described Epididymitis I’m thinking it sounds more like a varicocele but I suppose I need to wait and see!
33yo, I’ve not had the snip but do have two kids so thankfully the fertility side of things isn’t as concerning.
Trying to weigh up whether I should drop out of Ard Rock sport next weekend, will be the biggest enduro-esque ride I’ve done in a long while and my prep hasn’t been great what with Covid the other week!
MatFull MemberI know OP has already got something else lined up but just came here to say On One Scandal! I use mine for similar purposes (tarmac miles to local endoooro spots)
Surprised it took so long to pop up as a suggestion!
MatFull MemberThanks all!
Thinksta, thanks for the offer, I’m heading back up the road on Wednesday so I’ve not long left down here. I’ll likely get out when an opportunistic parental window opens up (that alligns with a cooler part of the day!).
MatFull MemberI’ve got one of these on my daughters Beinn 20s, it’s a bit snug getting a 500ml bottle out of it (she needs a hand) but it fits
MatFull MemberThanks yeah! The way I get colds always seems to run different to my wife (I’ll get a head cold, she’ll get a sore throat).
I guess not trying to get a solution or say its anything special as such, it’s just one of those weird things I’ve never been able to describe and I’m curious to see if anyone else can do a better job than me!
MatFull MemberThanks all, the duracell one is 4400mAh vs the 5180mAh i currently have. I guess it’s only 15% less, I probably should just go with that!
MatFull MemberIt sounds a bit like the air shafts are not bolted to the lowers (and the lowers could potentially fall off with your front wheel). I’d be concerned about riding them until you’d got it sorted. The brake side leg should have a nut that threads onto what looks like a metal schrader valve, the other side should have a bolt. If you’ve lost both of these there’s nothing mechanically holding the lowers on. Service kits should have replacements for these for not much but it depends on your fork which kit you need. Also if this has happened you’ll have lost the small amount of lubricating oil you have in each leg so it would be advisable to top this up first.
(My understanding as a home mechanic who has serviced various RS forks – please correct me if I’m wrong)
Put the fork serial number in here to find out the model details
MatFull MemberAre these special googles that help you deal with giving Boris a computer lesson?
MatFull MemberGreat excuse. Its OK for the UK to have pissed our money up the wall because there’s more of us who failed to give it any serious thought and plan ahead.
I guess my point was more it would be a significantly smaller percentage wise as a balance sheet surplus here. Whether the government put the revenue to good use is a different question.
MatFull MemberIf we’d used our oil & gas to benefit the country as Norway did….
Norway is a country an order of magnitude smaller than United Kingdom (5.4 vs. 67.2 million people) with roughly similar volumes of oil production to date (40+ bn bbl). So it’s not exactly a fair comparison.
MatFull MemberMy wife has a Patagonia Houdini as above, it seems to be exactly the same concept as the featherlite (light weight packable pertex jacket) Hers has a hood though, not sure I they make one without?
She’s very happy with it as a just in case jacket or for running/cycling (she runs hot).MatFull MemberUpdate with (sort of) positive news, I tried the “chkdsk /f” a few more times and could never get it to complete, even waiting hours (it would just hang on 100% complete). The laptop seemed pretty unstable and when I did manage to get into windows it would crash.
I decided sod it, a new SSD was £40 (256GB not the 500GB previously quoted). I was just going to take a punt and see if that fixes the issue. It arrived yesterday and this evening I’ve popped it in the laptop, in the meantime a prepared a windows 10 installation on a usb drive. I switched it on with the machine attached and it has booted up normally (as in actually working properly) without asking me to boot from the USB drive. Everything has loaded up as normal. I’m really doubting my understanding of the setup now…
Does this mean the machine hasn’t been booting from the SSD?
If it has been booting from the HD why has this resolved the boot issue?
Should I see two separate drives (my computer just shows 1 C-drive, before and after I replaced the SSD)The SSD and HD both show up in the listed hardware in the bios and in device manager
MatFull MemberI was bombarded with Rob Warner adverts on FB for months (if not years) and finally caved and bought some last summer. I’ve been really happy with them.
I got Red chrome, silver chrome and low light lenses. I’ve not used the silver chrome (really sunny day one) yet as most of my rides are in and out of the trees. The Red chrome has a darker tint at the top of the lens which is really handy in mixed light. The low light is great too, I’d say my usage has been 50:50 low light and red chrome.
I would agree with the comments about the frames clashing with helmets, definitely more of an issue with my enduro helmet (Montaro). For me this doesn’t affect fit/function of either helmet or glasses, it just means a bit of rattling, which I understand would be annoying for some.
MatFull MemberMy work is finally just about to launch a salary sacrifice scheme (through tusker as well). I’ve kind of convinced myself I want an iD3*, I want
– Golf sized that I can comfortably get a family of 4 in
– a towbar so I can put a bike rack on it
– heat pumpIs there anything else I should be considering? It’s weird, lots of the head to head reviews for the iD3 seem to pitch it with bigger more expensive cars.
*don’t laugh, I’ve heard it’s something like a 14 month lead time
MatFull MemberI was going to ask in a similar vein, has anyone with Tech 3 E4s tried the new pad compound with Tech 3s?
