Phew I find the general sentiment of this thread quite refreshing, I’ve been quite annoyed by the recent kickings browns had, he doesn’t have self confidence etc, I want somme one who knows what to do not some smarmy git who’s only talent is spin. (not a very well articulated post but I’m busy packing for the alps!)

Hopefully going to make all 3, did 10utb and Moray last year, selling my T-the-park ticket so i can make 10 at K’Tree

as crazy legs says you decide how hard you want it to be (*ahem*),
good events to start off in, they’re really nice and laid back organisation wise.

I dunno how I’m going to fare in 10 utb this year, revision and course work have put paid to most serious riding over these past couple of months and my last exam is just a week before!

How far up deeside are you anyway?

I had this problem on my handjob recently, had tried countless times with WD40 sprayed round the post but it didn’t work,

In the end I got a load of ice cubes in a wet tea towel and rubbed the the seatpost (phnarrr phnarrr), did this for about 10 mins and then gave the saddle a good heave (took my ti rail saddle off and put an old one on to save me wrecking it)

Seemed to do the trick, aluminium is supposed to expand and contract quicker than steel, whether or not this principle was at work or if it was just fluke I don’t know. I guess it wouldn’t hurt to make sure the frame is at a reasonable temperature before you start (eg not been sat in a cold shed)

Not just the crew they are holding to ransom; vessel and cargo, too.

Yeah but a vessel is far easier to retake when you don’t have the threat of hostages being hurt

Someone in my year did a project on CO2 capture and then passing this through an algae solution, which then photo-synthesises the CO2. You then dry this algae and use it as combustible biomass, which can then be re-used in the original power generation process. Apparently MIT have it running at a decent capture efficiency on one of their buildings, can’t find any info on it just now though.

It’s effectively solar power I suppose, I don’t know precisely how it pans out against the likes of PV and solar steam generation in terms of capital/precious resources for unit/unit area per kW generated.

It would give more bang for your buck in terms of energy from fossil fuels though, eg use coal/oil/gas to generate power then make biomass for transport uses. I think electric cars will struggle due to the inhibitive costs of batteries and the scarcity of lithium, it’s fairly finite too so that fact that this process gives biomass is quite appealing.

I agree that we should look at the more easily achievable targets, heating/cooling uses a lot more energy than electricity. Improving the efficiency of these aspects would go a long way, more stringent building regs for housing would be a good step.

I’d taken into account fitting kit, sprocket and shifter, I just wasn’t too sure what exactly ‘fitting kit’ entailed

Ok just seen the DMR one, can’t find a diameter for the axles on the Alfine, any one know what will work with what?

I’m thinking I need one of these:

    Solid Axle Chain Tug

Edit – Didn’t work too well:
    On-one Chain Tugs

But they’re sold out, any alternatives?

i find a lot of the younger riders today are riding for radness.
not like the older end who ride for the joy of being out in the countryside, and enjoying the comradeship of cycling that a lot of older riders were brought up with, stemming from ctc and club rides.
they seem more interested in what they can ride down or clean, and the sight of someone falling infront of them would probably bring them a fix of sick humour.
all you can hope in life is that if one of these kind of people fall, it will be harder and from a graeter height, and hopefully someone will ride past them in their time of need.

Hope this is some brass-eye still piss take right?

Can’t really write us all off, i think I’m pretty polite, I say hi to most folk I meet in the hills, thank them when I pass them and certainly stop if someones spackered themselves across the trail, can happen to any of us.

Definately decided to steer of glentress this weekend, I hate bank holidays! Revision and a cold meant all I could manage was a quick spin in the pentlands on the cx.

the_lecht_rocks – I was riding at pitfichie last week and some ****t on a full suss, sun glasses (proper magazine photoshoot gettup) gave me some dirty look as he razzed down the fire road into the car park, I was riding up the side and he forced me out of the way so he could get the best line. Wish I had the skillz to ride a fire road like that :p noticed he had a tarty civic in the carpark, he was sooooo cool…

what world class stuff do you ride by the way?

(I don’t ride trail centres often, that was my first time at pitfichie, I just figured I should ride it living near by)

Pikes have oil seal, foam and dust seal as standard (non oem) so i would assume the rest of the range would…unless revelations use the fox/magura system and have a dust/oil seal in one and foam below?

yeah they seem to, although the original dust seals seem in no way different to the replacement kit to account for this.

Does the flat side sit in against the lowers then I take it? (i.e. flat facing downwards)

    Mat

    Ahh ok cheers, that figures

Why do they do this? They were OEM off merlin, is it some kind of cost saving?

Just to say somewhere different to Aviemore and Speyside maybe a look at Ballater Plenty of B&B’s and resteraunts, these are both cracking resteraunts and I think you can stay in both too:
    Auld Kirk[/url]
    Darroch Learg
not stayed in them with being just 12 miles down the road! prob’s both reasonably pricey
    there’s also the craigendarroch
Highland Hiltony type thing, with spa n’ all that

as for ‘attractions’ there’s Balmoral up the road and that’s about it, there’s quite a lot of pootly walks you could do that would all be quite nice (dunno how immobile pregnant ladies are); Loch Muick, Linn o’ dee just up past braemar, cambus o’ may, burn o’ vat (just realised most have an o’ in)

it’s not really quite as touristy as other places in the Highland’s but I think you could have a nice quiet weekend there, with gentle walks, decent scenery, tea rooms and resteraunts. Even better with a bike but I guess that’s out the picture.

bout 42 miles from aberdeen so about an hours drive.

edit: upon reading that I sound like a teenage oik (I’m not I’m 20) but I’ve got too much to be doing to dedicate much time to my coherence just now!

Olie – I wondered if it could be something like that, I’ll try tweaking the cleat a bit. If it’s hurting the outside of my foot I guess I should move them further to the right.

Anyone have any recommendations for fitting in the Burgh? How could I tell if my legs are significantly different lengths?

Keep thinking the new one sounds like pump it up by Elvis Costello so I ‘tubed it to check and found this:
    Pump it up
was disappointed to find it wasn’t a witty mix between the two.

They should be banned, people have to remember they breed for one thing and one thing only, eating rodents. I should be allowed to walk truffles, my hamster, in the knowledge that he is safe from badger attack :P
