I use a Camelbak Delaney Fit if I know I’ll be out for over 1.5hrs. It comes with a Podium bottle, which is the best bottle I have used (bike/run/tri etc).

Carries the bottle, plus has a small pocket for keys, gels, phone etc.

Using water stations is fine in a race, but I keep running and end up with a plastic cup full of water up my nose. A bottle means I get to drink rather than snort.

I just use a double layer of tubigrip at night on my calves. less than a fiver will do both sides.

And if you wanna be a real cheapskate, use it for running too. And if you don’t want to look like your nan, just put your old slack calf guards over the tubigrip when you run :-)

There are plenty of rabbits around

Rabbit has little if any nutritional value.

I don’t rate combis, had one in old house, had to wait ages for hot water in the kitchen if the heating was off i.e. all summer. And had to run electric cold only shower.

Current house has normal gas boiler feeding CH and HW tank, feeding two H&C power showers, and it’s bloody ace.

HW tank also has electric heater as a failsafe if a gas problem.

Biketart tape for me. Bought a couple of metres, thought it was expensive at the time, but still have half left and have done all rub and bash points on 3 bikes, including an Orange 5 swingarm.

As above really, I get them quite severely if I increase mileage/intensity too quickly. I take a couple of weeks off running (does my cycling and swimming training the world of good anyway) and they go away, but it does interrupt my progress, and I have to start a little way back again.

I went to a sports physio who showed me how to self massage the area to break down the adhesions, and I do lots of stretching of calves and shins too.

I did a Duathlon on Saturday with a 12k run, 40k bike, 4k run and have had no pain whatsover from them either during or after. So treat them right and you will get over them.

I would say stop running now, do lots of stretching, and a bit of other low impact cardio if you want/can. You won’t lose any fitness, and could actually be very well rested and fresh for the day.

    And good luck.

    And post up your time.

    Just do it carefully!

I’ve done mine a few times. You might need to remove the fitting from the end of the hose too. Make sure you don’t squeeze the lever or push in the pistons, and you should be alright.

But bleeding really isn’t that hard if it all goes wrong anyway.

As an idea, you could get a cheapo Garmin GPS watch and use that for running/cycling etc, and then use the cheapest waterproof watch you can find i.e. under a fiver, for timing your swim.

For a tri, have the GPS mounted on the bike ready for coming out of the swim. You could get one with a QR mount to swap from bike to run for the tri.

GPS doesn’t track open water swims very well at all, some folk put their GPS in the swim cap to get a better fix, but I’d be worried about getting my cap knocked off in the biff and losing 300 quids worth of technology.

I use a Garmin 310xt. Now that the 910 is out, 310 price is falling. An you can set it to multisport mode with transition time your full event.

    +1 fro DC Rainmaker’s site.

    I use Tracklogs 1:50,000.

Also use Garmin and MapMyRun/Ride from time to time but the detail is not as good as the OS mapping on Tracklogs when plotting off road routes.

I stayed at Callow Top just outside Ashbourne a few times, but many years ago.

Not sure what they have now but was good and convenient back then.

Close to Tissington Trail for family bike rides too.

I use Tracklogs[/url] to draw up routes on the laptop, and save them to an ancient Garmin Etrex on a RAM mount with a home-made bar clamp.

Just follow the line. Hardly ever need to get a map out.

Also great for checking grid refs if you get completely lost.

I print the route out and lamnate it with a cheap home laminator so it’s waterproof for reference and future use.

If I go anywhere new, GPS is the primary nav method.

I use Michelin Trekkers for on off road commuting. Dead cheap too. Not race fast, but seem a good compromise.

Did 80k on the bike and 7k run earlier in the week, and just did a PB 45:00 10k race this morning.

So yup, nice sore legs here too.

    Swim club at 8:30 – 10:00 tonight :-)

Sounds like you had a tough day iDave, nice one? Dare I ask your HM time? My best so far (out of only 2) is 1:49:34.

Apparently we’ll be £310 better off.

But then our pension contributions go up in April, and no pay rise for 3 years so far, means that we will actually worse off than we were 3 years ago :-(

    It’s all bollox really.

CX tyres will wear out pretty quick if you do lots of road miles.

If it’s hard pack and not much mud, stick to the Marathons, or even road slicks.

I do a 50/50 0n/off road commute with farm tracks and bridleways and towpaths as well as back lanes. I use Michelin Trekkers, which are probably similar to (actually likely to be worse than!) Marathons. Slow and heavy. But they last ages, and are fine as I don’t get many sections of proper mud.

A Conti CX tyre (Race King?) lasted about 3 months on the rear.

Take her up the Oxo Tower.
    is that a mumsnet reference?

With a name like yours I’m surprised no-one has suggested you take her up the Arsenal

My 310xt does all of that. Plotted and followed a 60+k bike route yesterday no probs.

DCRainmaker should be able to point you in the right direction between 310 and 910.

I’m about to go the opposite way!

Started with CX tyres, moved on to “treaded” Michelin Trekkers, anow looking at 28mm Slicks.

Commute is 50% road back lanes, 50% farm track, loose gravel tracks, smoothish bridleway, country park hardpack tracks. Just under 20 miles each way.

From experience I don’t think you need knobblies unless you have long sections of mud.

    Learned!

I blame my mother for my squeamishness.

I have over the past 10 or so years “un-learned” most of it. Mainly through a severe broken wrist requiring external fixator, and just “getting on with it”, along with a few ops like tennis elbow surgery via local anaesthetic etc. Most things don’t bother me now, unless I over think about it.

I remember when my son was about 8yo, I took him to the dentist to have some teeth out. I had to be helped out of the waiting room and into the fresh air. He just stood and watched, and walked proudly into the surgery!

The new Sherlock is good, if you like Pirates of the Carribean type films.

I’m not a film watcher, but went to the Odeon to watch it after I’d seen the first one on the telly. Really enjoyed it.

Previous cinema visit was Last King of Scotland. Had to go with SWMBO as she had spent time in Uganda. Actually was really good.

Before that I went to see Toy Story when my lad was about 6yo, so about 16 years ago!

I just switched from BT to Sky. Very easy to do.

Speed is equally as good, and no monthly limit. Very easy Sky set up.

Family of 3 here (with xbox boy!) normally 18 – 22GB per month.

Jase – Sort your spelling out mate ;-)

My brain works in a way that focusses on spelling and grammar (did some of those personality tests that confirm it!).

    Feb 14th
    “site” = sight
    “assent” = ascent

In the first couple of paras.

Sorry to be picky, but it makes it difficult for me to read.

[goes off to research the word “anal”]

Am thinking of doing a blog myself, so I’ll open myself up to STW at some point :-)
