That’s a fairly unique business. Which “side” do you work for, upstairs or downstairs?

Go and see a physio! You can get a referral on the NHS from your doctor, I get in to see mine that way within 3 days :-). Yours might be a bit slower so you might need to go private.

I have allsorts of sporting ailments being an old giffer who started sport in my mid forties.

Currently having a knee issue which is caused by my hip, and got some exercises to strengthen and balance up my muscles.

Seeing a great difference within 2 weeks, and I have been running and cycling during that period.

On the subject of shoes – I got some running shoes from a proper shop, after they did a gait analysis. Those shoes always give me shin splints, so that was £70 wasted!

I went in to a another running shop a couple of months later and bought some shoes that felt like they fitted perfectly from their sale rack, no gait analysis, but a bit of fit and feel advice from the shop owner, and hey presto no more shin splints! I do all distances up to half mara and lots of triathlons and duathlons as well as 3 runs a week.

I think fit and feel is more important IMHO.

Amber Gas based in Belper have always been ok for me. Don’t know anyone nearer Derby though.

My new Endura MT500 are suiting me at the moment, both on and off road.

Also still like my 3+ year old Gore Bike Wear shorts.

The BB was fitted to a complete bike, so I got no instructions, although I’m a competent mech I didn’t get any info on the BB size tolerance, so will be digging the verniers out.

There is a pdf HERE that shows the tolerances, if anyone needs to check theirs.

I still don’t like the “tighten ’til it stops” of the RF cranks.

    Cheers for the replies.

stevied – are you using Race Face cranks, or Shimano?

Orange Crush – I agree, tightening the raceface crank I’m sure squeezes the bearings together a touch, and that causes the rapid wear and annoying noises.

Hmmm….might be time to switch to a Shimano HT11 so that the bearings aren’t over loaded.

More spendy even than a Hope BB! :D

6’4″ ride a 20″ and had to put a longer stem on as I feel too perched on top.

You’d probably be ok with either 18″ or 20″ and fiddle the reach with stem and saddle tweaks.

I’d change the shifters, having the up/down control in one place is better as you can shift both ways from drops and tops. Might be worth going for 9 speed and cassette/chain.

Whether it will make you faster is another question.

Run your current wheels through the winter and either get them rebuilt or new wheels in the spring :-)

I had elbow release surgery a couple of years ago. Worked a treat. Not quite totally pain free, not quite as strong as before, but pretty much there.

    Best decision I made.

Not funny, but hope it helps.

Th funny bit was when the surgeons were waving an arm around at the other side of the screen and I thought they were operating on someone else at the same time!

Thanks for the suggestions, had a great weekend.

Drove to Premier Inn at ExCel for 9:15am, got a Travelcard and DLR to Royal Victoria to pick up the Emirates Airline cablecar across the Thames to O2.

Picked up a Clipper, which went like the clappers, up to the London Eye, Tube to Kensington, early lunch in a Tapas bar (ouch spendy! cafe at NHM would have been better), then on to Natural History Museum, then V&A, then a walk through Knightsbridge, past Buck Palace etc back to tube and boat and DLR to Hotel.

The missis loved it, and I got loads of brownie points.

An I had a good triathlon on the Sunday too, in abysmal weather conditions, that made it all the more fun!

    Cheers

I’ve got a long sleeve Icebreaker and love it. I wear it as a normal t-shirt under day clothes during the winter as well, it’s that comfy.

And only wash it once a week, it works better that way, honestly.

I found the BaaBaa too itchy.

Also got a Moon brand merino t-shirt which is soft and thin, plus had a Craghoppers which was fine but went badly out of shape after a couple of washes.

Will be looking at Embers this winter, as their factory shop is only down the road.

I do also wear Skins 360 baselayers too (not wool), but only on the bike/run.

Argos are very careful to say “jump style” bike. So that if you do jump on it and it breaks…….

I’ve got some bits of steel conduit in the shed, might get the welder out this weekend

Road width rims, CX tough, disc hubs, and rim brake compatible for swapping around a bit!

I’m gonna be a Grandad in September.

    Scans say it’s a girl.

We’ve started calling her Shimano Crankshaft

Mum to be is not best pleased

They are deciding on the name after they see her, but us granpys are sticking with Shimano. Has a nice “Chardonnay” ring to it :P

Ended up at the White Lion in Great Longstone. Very nice, good food. Started to fill up around 7:30pm, so good job we got there early.

Meadowhall first, bought her a couple of tops and some warpaint, then a nice surprise unplanned meal in a proper country pub. Oh I’m getting good at this

Good to get the other recommendations too, for picking up future brownie points

If they’ve found Higgs it’s potentially massive.

Or very small. It’s taken some finding.

All this has given me a hardon too, and that’ll take some finding as well :-(

    Good suggestions guys, thanks.

Will be (cough)shopping(cough) in Meadowhell this afto, then travelling back through the Peak to Belper, and we like the scenic routes. thought it would be nice to stop off for dinner.

Scotsmans Pack or Lion at Longstone are sounding good so far.

I had a Retul bike fit done last year, and as part of the deal, I bought a 2nd seatpost and saddle, and some tri-bars from them, and they did a TT/Tri fit free.

I simply bolt on the tri bars and swap seatpost and saddle as a unit and I’m good to go.

The position is noticeably different. I started with the handlebars at the road height when first using it in TT mode, and have slowly been dropping/flipping the stem to get a lower front. Still a way to go, but one step at a time.

The hip angle change is better for running off the bike in a tri.

    DrP – Don’t use a rimstrip!

A few wraps of electrical tape and a tubeless valve is all you need. And swapping tyres also becomes much easier.

I’ve done it on 4.2 and 5.1 DT rims with no problems. Maxxis, Spesh, Conti and Bonty tyres, so not that finicky either.

And I run under 25psi on the front and no probs in years of use.

If you are doing a straight swap, just undo the union at the levers and swap them over. Make sure you don’t squeeze the levers while you are doing it, and you shouldn’t lose any fluid, and no bleeding necessary.

So how much is it to hire a AQR bike, and how much to put it on a plane?

If there’s not much in it, hire one from AQR. You will get a decent spec bike (not a “holiday” rental) that is suited to the terrain, and will not be wearing out your tyres and drivetrain and brakepads, so that covers a bit extra too. Yhen you have no packing hassle, and no worries about changing T&Cs.

I rented from JoyRiders a while back. Worked for me.

I have a Kona Jake 62cm frame and Kona Project 2 straight leg steel fork for sale. £65 for the lot posted. You can then play around with frames and forks and see for yourself :-)

It is a bit too big for me, hence selling. I now have a PX Kaffenback, with tapered PX steel fork.

The Kona frame and fork are definitely both stiffer than the PX.

I’m in the slow process of converting my Kaffenback to discs.

Got a pair of Avid BB5s from CRC a couple of months ago for £13 each :-) Using Tiagra STIs.

Just trying to work out the best way to get the wheels sorted. THESE are looking about the cheapest. It’s only my commuter, but I’m doing a bit of bike camping this summer, plus my current rims are getting pretty worn, so might as well go for disc wheel replacements.

Or could go for some Deore hubs with Mavic A114 rims or similar. About £140 built by LBS.

she might be better off using the middle ring occasionally
Missed this first time round. You dirty, dirty boy.

I was thinking more along the lines of finding a girl who prefers it in the little ring

For a bit more comfort go for a frame that will take bigger tyres, so a CX “style” would work.

I am really happy with my PX Kaffenback (steel) as a commuter, mudguards/rack/panniers etc. Rides really nice.

And I have a PX SL Pro Carbon for triathlons and Sunday group rides. That was an absolute bargain at £1k.

Not particularly a PX/OnOne fanboi, but you can’t beat the value.

I was tempted with the Genesis steel bikes too, though.

Aye, less than 3 years to go! Took up triathlons last year too. Will be doing an Ironman for my 50th (well, the Outlaw, but iron distance).

Obviously got something to prove to myself.

Fitter than I’ve ever been. And even the young girls at work (those in their early 40’s  ) say I’m lookin lean

By pure coincidence I’m currently tucking in to hummus with carrot and cucumber sticks, smoked mackerel, and some basil and pine nut farfalle.

    All leftover from yesterday’s lunch.

And I’m not even on a diet.

Cheers Dave, will start looking over that route to see if I can work out the ground.

I think some Sustrans round here goes through a country park, and old railway, and some back roads and a bit of cycle route, so should be ideal.

Might try and cut a few corners with a bit of proper off road too, which will be a laff on the Kaff’
