I’m not a big reader, but currently reading “The Hundred Year Old Man Who Climbed Out Of The Window And Disappeared”

    Amusing and quirky.

Sainsbury’s at Ripley open at 6am tomorrow Wrightyson. See you there ;-)

Will be done and dusted by 8am, then off for a quick swim, before baking Xmas biscuits with wifey (aaaah) then a quick run before beer with friends in the evening.

    Sorted.

Not been fiddling with anything that I shouldn’t!

Most of time all is fine and it works perfectly, hence the “random” reference.

So I know the system is all good. Only thing that works is a re-boot.

Just been looking at mid position valve issues. That might be it. Could be getting sticky or something. The reset will power it off and reset it too.

Hopefully someone will come along and tell me where to squirt some WD40 and save me needing to buy a new valve, which will inevitably be a newer non-compatible with my existing valve and need a system drain….blah….blah….!

    It’s not a combi boiler.

When it does this random thing, the hot water is still being heated, it just doesn’t feed the rads.

There’s a motorised valve in the airing cupboard. Currently researching that!

A few years ago I bought something via ebay.

Was a normal ebay style transaction. No issues.

    Why?

Cool, looks like no horror stories with aftermarket ones, so will now just wade through the millions of variations to find the one I need.

I’d go, and my missis keeps dropping hints.

Have been to Sat Bains in Nottingham and had the “chefs table” where Sat and his team bring out each of 13 courses and explain where the produce is from, and how it is prepared.

Also had the wine package with our own sommelier who brought a different wine to match each course. Sounds a bit poncy, but it was incredible how tasting a wine before the food, and then after, really brought out complementary flavour.

I still reckon that at just shy of £200 a head it was actually the best value meal I’ve ever had. It surprises me to say that, but it’s true.

So, if you can afford the trip, and don’t mind the journey, go for it.

I set off from Edale on Saturday for a ride around Jacobs. Didn’t even make it up to Hollins Cross before turning round as it was all ice. That was saturday though, and it looked like snow had melted a bit and froze into ice overnight.

Did a ride around Chatsworth instead, but still found lots of ice on Beeley Moor.

Mine was similar until 3 months ago when he got to 23 and now has a baby and a house and a job at the council.

Drove me mad for years. His mother is a bit less aggressive than me with him, and that was very wise of her (she is the wise one in the house).

He is a talented, “kind of sponsored” rider (gets frames and parts, shoes and clothes and comp entries, but no money) and was only focussed on getting paid for riding. He is skilled enough, but it was never really gonna happen, but we didn’t want to take that dream away just in case it could happen.

Basically he just needed the time to sort himself out (at my expense!!!) and that is what he’s done.

You just need to suck it up and try to give him stability and support, not confrontation.

Not easy, but they are a different breed these days.

I blame the advent of the dishwasher.

Cut out milk – drink black coffee, peppermint tea etc, orange juice on yer muesli

    Cut out bread.

My missis has been struggling to shift a stone that she put on following an accident that has left her unable to do any vigorous exercise. 2 months ago she stopped bread and milk and is now a stone lighter, with practically no other change to diet and no exercise.

Be sensible with your food, but cut out bread and milk.

I just got some Spesh Defrosters after having numb feet for 3 and a half hours on the MTB on Saturday.

Used them for the first time on my on/off road almost 2 hour each way commute yesterday.

Feet got cool but not numb.

I also got a bigger size so I can put decent socks on when it gets really cold.

On the road I also wear overshoes, but on the MTB the toe bit gets pulled off when you dab or push, so not so good.

I cut mine down with a hacksaw no probs, and tidied it up with a file.

Your plan will result in a very wobbly ‘guard. You will need the stays. Just spray them black and they’ll practically disappear.

If I was you I’d stick with the Defender BTW :-)

I disagree with the going and getting fancy trainers – just go and get some basic “neutral” running shoes. There is a good body of evidence to show that stability and motion control shoes lead to more injuries even in people who they are designed for.

Going to agree with the internets again

That’s what I mean by just buying some cheapish normal running trainers as a start point, before splashing loads of dosh.

I went to a proper running shop and they sold me some trainers that gave me shin splints (and still do if I try them out for a change) so I have little faith.

I now wear Brooks which I bought in the sales coz they felt comfy and fit nice, and all is now well, doing up to half mara and lots of tri’s and 10ks.

The Asics I got were fine for getting me up and err…running.

As it happens I’m now moving over to Newtons, but lets not go there.

Get some comfy running shoes and go for some easy runs.

Remains of last nights spag bol, probably a bit more than a large portion just to finish it off. Plus 2 sainsbury’s extra butter mince pies.

I’ve lost a stone in weight with no effort over the last 10 months.

Get yourself off to Decathlon for some Asics Blackhawk Gel trainers crica £30.

    Then do what Glupton1976 says.

I started running at 45 years old as I couldn’t cycle due to an elbow op. Started with an easy jog round the block, about 5km. But real easy.

Did that a couple of times a week for a few weeks, then add a km and repeat.

Then you can start looking at increasing speed distance, as you will have got your body ready to train.

    I like mine.

But I didn’t have another similar bike hanging around that would handle laden commuting duties.

Seeing as the Kaff is a cheap frame, perfectly good and enjoyable, but not a posh sophisticated replacement, I’d say probs not worth bothering if your current tourer still works and is the right size.

Unless you just want a change. Kaff also has swapouts so is versatile if you fancy SS or Alfine etc.

    Yes.

Just built my first full wheel from scratch, so am an amateur.

But I have trued, replaced spokes, replaced a full set of alloy nips that were crumbling away, straightened a full pringle at the side of the trail so that I could ride back to the car.

If nothing else, you have a few spares for when you spot a broken spoke on the Saturday night before a Sunday ride.

I didn’t rate mine at all.

Easy to cross thread, have to remove batteries to charge them so regular risk of cross threading.

Plus the front light is visible from all around, so when you are riding along you catch the light which affects your forward vision.

    And they are bloody expensive.

    MaryHinge

Why wire them up to operate separately? The more light the better.

I’ve got 6 tubes in my garage, all working through one switch. I really notice it when one tube is out.

It’s just a normal lighting circuit.

I have the new model Kaff, use it for commuting with full guards and 35mm tyres, but had to cut the rear guard to get the tyre in, so better with 32mm or less on the rear. I wanted 35mm coz I carry heavily loaded panniers off road on my 25 mile each way commute.

It handles fine on rough tracks.

I’m just converting mine to discs, built a new front wheel with disc hub.

It also makes a great winter trainer with guards etc. Really enjoy riding mine. Would be happy touring and cyclo crossing on it. Not the lightest, but not silly heavy, and I wanted the toughness.

Old England Hotel, Bowness on Windermere.

Superb. Spa, pool, gym etc. Great lounge overlooking the lake for afternoon tea. Restaurant is excellent.

Plus you are in town for shops and choice of bars/restaurants (try Jacksons Bistro).

Staff are super helpful. Can lock bikes up in underground car park.

We won’t stay anywhere else in the Lakes these days.

A few wraps of electrical tape and a mavic tubeless valve (other makes are available).

100mm of liquid latex, and a maxxis minion non-UST, or UST if you prefer.

@wwaswas – I like that, proper bit of kit. no need to clamp it to the table! Bet the postage was a bit high.

I spotted that plate, and I reckon it’s a sighting plate. Gives you a nice clean background to look “down” the wheel?

Ahem….nearly! Well, no, not really at all.

At the moment it looks like a bus shelter!

Been looking at a few stove today. reckon I might go for a small glass fronted multifuel, as I can put some coal in to keep it going for longer, and we can see the flames too.

    Will keep looking.

I use a Kaffenback for my 25 mile each way commute. Only do it once or twice a week max as I’m in hilly Derbyshire, and I also run and swim, as well as working from home and away.

Full mudguards and rack/panniers are essential. I have to carry everything so weight is over 10kg for panniers filled with stuff.

I made a bubblewrap liner for my laptop, so I can just slip it in and know it will be pretty well protected. Not had any issues with it caused by the commute in over 2 years of commuting 1 day per week. And my route is half on/half off road so it gets some abuse.

So I’d recommend a CX/tourer type bike. Flat bars wit bar ends if you like.

No reason to avoid 29er with slicks if you want versatility and an MTB after your 6 months is up. But I really noticed the difference switching from an Inbred to the Kaff. Maybe better aerodynamics and skinnier 90 psi tyres.

@IHN – Last time I did Cadair we did Bont Scethin in the morning and Cadair in the afternoon. Daylight lasted a bit longer then tho!

I think we went up the bridleway from Castell y Bere GRID ref SH672089 -ish. Via Hafotty Gwastadfryn then pick up the Pony Path.

We took a bit of a detour on the way back down, turned off through some bracken somewhere!

Was a good ride carry ride.

I’d been mtb-ing for a couple of years, then got into triathlons. Never had a road bike, so had no idea how a road bike position should feel.

So a Bike Science fit, as a half price offer with new bike etc was actually good value. And I’m a big sceptic/tightarse!

I also got a TT/Tri position done, so I can switch positions easily, and it really does make a difference.

But I guess if you are already sorted from years of tweaking and adaptation, then you would expect little change.

depends how far you are cycling and running, and indoor or out?
