    I made mine!

Had some 5″ underground soil pipe left over from a job, cut it to about 24″ long. Wrapped in a single layer of foam sleeping mat fastened with a bit of gaffer tape.

Works perfectly. Was hard when I first started, but it really works as I can do 4 or 5 times more “rolls” now than I could 6 months ago.

No, no noise with chain off.

So it’s something to do with your chain then 🙂

Depends how much it’s bothering you, if it’s only a slight noise. A new chain isn’t that much £, so that would be a good start point.

Or wait to see what your new ring does.

Last thought, chain rubbing on the rear mech cage?

Take your chain off and spin the cranks, then spin the wheel. Does it still make the noise? It isolates those components.

Having had experience of a number of French cars, mainly Renaults, I avoid all french cars.

As you say 26k and some niggly problems!

@Spacemonkey – Thanks :-). It’s a diy creation. Was originally going to be a pergola type thing (christened the bus shelter), but the missis kept adding “wants”, so it’s morphed into a nice little garden room. I think the term is “scope creep”!

Got power in there, wifi signal is strong, so will be used as office, party HQ, post ride watering hole etc. Nice way of getting out of the house away from the telly even if the weather is crap.

Had a few beer sessions in there during the snow, couple of fan heaters, beer outside in 12″ of the white stuff. It will be real cosy once it’s insulated.

My green roof is now on….

It’s a sedum and wildflower mix.

A bit of regular watering for a couple of weeks to get it established and it will look after itself 🙂

Just got to finish insulating and boarding the inside, and few other finishing off bits.

Can’t wait for my ride in tomorrow. See if I can stop for long enough to take a couple of snaps.

I am steadily picking up parts for a 29er SS build for the winter, to mince around my local 1.5 – 2hr loop and not have to clean it very often.

Not got a frame lined up yet, hoping to get a go on a Stanton Sherpa when the samples come in later this year.

Otherwise it might just be a Scandal, or….oh I dunno.

Those Yelli’s look wrong with the bendy top tube, like it’s been run into a tree. However, it interests me from mattg’s pic above how far back they get the seat with the sloping seat tube. Looks almost right over the rear axle, compared to some other bikes. I wonder how that compares to other bikes.

I’ll be riding Belper to Sheffield week after next. Up through Higham, Clay Cross, Chesterfield. Then a few choices. For a longer route if the weather is good I might go via Chatsworth area – lots of routes on quiet lanes.

I also have a route planned from Chesterfield via the canal, but don’t know how muddy it might be. Not an issue for me on the crosser, but you specified road bike.

I do Belper to Nottm once a week. I wouldn’t want to do it more than twice a week as I’d be a bit sluggish on my weekend rides for a while. Depends if this will be your only riding time i.e. other commitments for recreational time.

Derby to Sheff is probably 40 miles, so you’d need to allow 2.5 – 3 hours.

If you can do a 40 mile road ride no problem, then you shouldn’t have too much difficulty doing the return journey. But you might want to start off at once a week and build from that after 6 weeks or so.

How many times a week are you planning?

EDIT: Just re read your post. How fit are you? Try doing a 20 mile then 30 then 40 ride, and see how it feels. You could drive/bike part way to start if you need to build up, or catch the train there and cycle home.

I’ve successfully un-dinged a Mavic UST rim in the past. Carried on using it tubeless.

Give it a go, you’ve nothing to lose really.

Just run in your normal shoes.

    Don’t fix what ain’t broke.

Currently in my 9th week of not running following injury caused by changing things!

Previously running 25-30 miles per week with no problems 🙁

I should have stuck to my Brooks Adrenaline “road” shoes. Used them on trails, rocks, roots, grass and even on road.

Also, do the Gore gilets have very small rear pockets?

Mine’s the Alp-X 2.0 SO Zip Off. It has a front chest zipped pocket. The rear has three pockets. The outer two are zipped, so good for keys, wallet etc plus gels, food whatever. The central pocket is a large pouch type which will easily take a bottle.

I’ve not run out of space with mine.

I took my arm warmers off halfway round a 50 miler on Sunday as the temperature increased. I stuffed them into my short sleeved jersey pocket which was under my gilet with no problems.

Not the cheapest, but being able to zip sleeves off gives it 3-4 season use.

I bought mine from Biketreks when I was in the Lakes, but these TGStore seem pretty good on price.

Old England Hotel in Bowness on Windermere. Get them to do you a deal on a lake view room. Got pool and spa and stuff too.

Right in town so plenty to do too.

I’ve got a Gore softshell jacket with zip off arms, Phantom SO I think. Great piece of kit and very versatile.

Cheers Joey, I’ve spotted that deal and can do TopCashBack too.

I think that might be the way to go.

My top tube tri bag does get in the way of my knees when out of saddle climbing (swinging the bike side to side).

Unconnectedly I was looking at those Deuter bags on CRC last night.

Think I have a bit in the old PayPal account 🙂

These little bags are great on the commuter too as I can leave a couple of gels in there plus my padlock keys, swipe card for work etc.

Nice one Yorkshire 89, welcome to the commuter fold!

For the record I do 25 miles each way, 50/50 on/off road, fairly hilly. At least once a week, but try for twice, but need to keep a bit in reserve for weekend riding/triathlons etc. We have secure bike parking and showers too, which is great.

As before, get everything ready the night before, and don’t be swayed by weather forecast, it’s often wrong. I actually revel in the sense of achievement when the weather is foul 🙂

I’m home based so have to carry everything with me including laptop, papers, clothes, shoes, toiletries etc. I use a road/cross bike with panniers and full mudguards.

My missis works in the same office occasionally, she walks to the local station and takes the train. We set off about the same time, I get there about 20 mins before her :-). Similar result if she takes the car as there is no parking at the office.

When you change the fan power can you feel a difference in the amount of air coming out? If not, might be clogged pollen filters. Just take ’em out and bin ’em.

Alternatively, is the engine temp getting up to normal? If not maybe a thermostat change required.

    If neither, check coolant level.

It could be a clogged heater pipe too, depends on age of vehicle. Can normally flush through with a hosepipe if you know what you are doing.

310XT with QR and DCRainmaker are recommended by me too. You can drop routes onto the 310XT and follow the “pointer”, not as good as a map, but fine if you have a rough idea where you want to go and can carry a map as a backup.

If you want mapping for the bike then probably the 800 or 810.

I need a new handheld GPS for walking (to replace my ancient breadcrumb trail only etrex), and will probably get the 810 and use it for walking and cycling. 810 has the tracking facility which wifey wants me to get for my solo rides. (she fell for it 😈 )

I like the variety of the training in 3 the different disciplines. Plus learning all the various new skills ie how to swim “properly”.

Don’t know much about your background/age, but you have loads of room for improvement.

I’m currently edging towards 7 mins for 400m swim. 30 mins for 1500m open water. Under 40 mins for 20k bike is not a problem, did 1hr 10mins for 40k in atrocious conditions on Oly distance last year. Down to 22 mins for the finish 5k run, and 45 mins for the 10k at an Oly.

Not fast, but I’m still getting faster, my aim is to keep beating previous years times fr the same events, and “going longer”, and beating my much younger training buddies of course.

And I’m relative newcomer aged 48.

So yeah, keep at it 🙂

Mavic also do the 823 if you want wider.

I have one on front for bashing round the Peak District and it’s been perfect for the last couple of years.

Not had any Stans so can’t compare.

By “over tighten” I assume you mean “take out too much of the slack” so that the throttle is held open slightly.

Yes, you probably could manage to do that, but you really don’t want to 🙂

Leave a small amount of slack to ensure that it shuts off fully.

    Collaborative working innit!

Holds many notebooks that can be shared across network.

Updates on all other users copies (assuming they are connected). Can work offline (eg on train) and synch when you next connect.

    Good for dispersed teams.

I’m no “expert” but have been using it a fair bit for the last year or so.

    Mine’s a 2004 H-RV with 160k+ on it.

    No issues here.

If you have checked and lubed the cable the next thing is to disconnect it at the throttle end, leave it connected at the pedal end, and then try the pedal to see if it’s still stiff. That will identify which end you need to be looking at.

I’d reckon on it being the throttle/carb end and you probably need a bit of carb cleaner to give it a good flush through.

I’ve been using disposable contacts this year. Work really well, not had any problems with discomfort or “eye poking”.

So I can then wear my normal (non-prescription) riding glasses or sunglasses depending on the light.

And you don’t get that edge of frame thing that you can get with prescription specs, which I think might be the “pissed” thing mentioned above.

And Oakleys only go to a certain prescription and one of my eyes needs stronger than that.

Hmmmm…..doing 20 miles a day everyday might make me go off riding bikes for fun…..but would make me a very fit cyclist.

Doing it once or twice a week is lots of fun and is helping make me a stronger rider at the weekends, when it matters 😉

Just stop buying it, then there’ll be none in the house to tempt you. Try tonic or sparkling water. Or just make a cup of tea – peppermint tea is good too.

I have a beer now and again 😉 but I don’t sweat over how much or how often, and go without for weeks at a time without a thought.

Now biscuits and chocolate, that’s another matter. So we don’t buy any when we do the shopping, and buy fruit instead. <angel>

Done over 120 miles on road and MTB in the last 7 days.

Was out on MTB yesterday evening, and out on the roadie with a newbie friend tonight in strong gusty winds.

    Just get out there.

Only icy conditions cut down on my riding.
