The skatepark that has been talked about for nigh on 10 years opened TODAY!
more like over 20! meetings about an edinburgh skatepark kicked off when i was skating at bristo c. 1990 and the closest we had to a park was the tollcross wastleland next to goldbergs. looking forward to having a nosey.

i did a trail inspection after a storm a couple of years ago (Carron Valley regulars might remember the storm that punched a hole in the forest on Pipedream).

**** terrifying – unstable trees are not to be **** with.

not unknown, but i like:

1. loch katrine system of dams and aqueducts – built to supply glasgow with water – http://www.hiddenglasgow.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=9427&start=0
2. cruachan power station – the scale of the main cavern is really impressive
3. the large scale hydro-electric dams built in scotland from 1930s onward. really should get round to buying one of the books written about the boom times post wwii.

Possibly the only "natural trail" in the country that has a section lined with catch netting
enduro motor bike trail IIRC.

Am I missing something here ?
dunno. jot down some figures on where you think the money goes. say for an average regional XC race – 300 riders, in a forest, no facilities on-site.

2. At that time, aluminium did not exist as a frame tube material for mountain bikes. It was Klein and Cannondale who first started using it, around '87-88.
are you sure about that?

mad props (as we say in fife) to the organisers and their helpers for getting this on.

just in case that sounds like a Scotrail love-in – they're still a bit shit at getting their trains to run on time. 🙂

travel most days with a bike on scotrail and never had a problem, even travelling late after a night ride. occasionally people will leave luggage/prams/golf clubs in the bike space, but as long as you ask nicely they will move them if needed. presuambly the bike watchers keep their wallets in their undercrackers and their house keys in their "special place". 😉

2 spaces per train IIRC
depends on the service (and type of train). the commuter train i get towards edinburgh in the morning normally has room for 8 officially on a 6 carriages. 3 carriage trains normally have 4 official spaces these days. guards are very good IME and unlikely to take action where more than 2 bikes unless the cyclists are being tits.

[]Even now, this isn't winter tyre weather, unless you live right up in the hills.
er, maybe in the south. LOTS of main road round here still sketchy on "normal tyres" (west lothian/fife) – particularly where untreated side streets/car parks have dragged stuff out on to main roads. probably still BBQ weather down there though…

bit of salt, bit of chilli, bit of honey and some lime juice. that way we can marinade the fish at source.

seem to recall taking samples on a fieldtrip to measure levels of airport antifreeze in local watercourses. do airports still do that?

am sure there'll be research on salt>watercourses. probably from the 1970s when we used to get proper winters. 🙂

cold weather is great. the snow can bugger off though – fine for walking, crap for riding.

The Drunkest Man in the Village can be seen at the start. I heard the wound was inflicted as he tried to take his undercrackers off *during* an Orcadian Strip the Willow. I think we all know how hard that is to do…

Brilliant event. If you haven't, you should.

just waiting for brew ii to mature – a belgian beer from kit. thinking off getting frisky with the brew iii.

how big is the step up to doing things "properly", rather than adding water and sugar to some stuff from a tin?

1000l – chapeau!

it's only the DH trails that shut for winter. was out in the central highlands yesterday – hills are very wet, but i've seen worse. trail centres will be fine (unless the wind has brought some trees down).

Its a PITA as you have to back off the screws that push the wheel back to get enough slack to get the chain off before removing the wheel
this is where a chaintug works better IMHO. could leave in the nds one to prevent any braking movement, but i've not experienced this yet.

i've had both.

wanga
io

both been fine bikes. i fell out with the wanga early on when i threaded one of the sliding drops snugging it up on a long ride. made it home OK, but it needed new sliders.

io's track ends + avid bb7 are no bother even with a qr in the hub (with chain tug on the d/s) – wheel removal doesn't need the caliper to be moved.

which one is the nicer colour? 🙂

So what's the biggest tyres / sks (or similar) guards combos anyone's managed?
700×45+mudguards according to the Surly website. Largest I've tried is 700×25+mudguards. 🙂

are there any differences in the road vs MTB model which would mean that I shouldn't buy the road version for mountain biking?
the soles on the road version won't have much of a tread (if any).

i've got a paul chain keeper on my cx bike. been flawless so far. bought through that website and service was also flawless.
