No need to use “classic” in thread title. The new things are just small BWMs not Minis. 😉

Briefly had a Mini Mary Quant. Bought for £1000, sold for £500 a year later after £750 of work. Doh! Still wish I hadn’t sold it, but GF needed a reliable car for work and the Mini wasn’t it…

    hubba hubba!

nice! been keen to try something like that since seeing a GoPro promo vid – that one had camera very close rider’s (Ryan Nyquist) face.

would be interested to see how you made it – your last link isn’t working for me.

if you’re running horizontal drops you can use the double bolt style of chain tensioner – just need to break out the grinder.

Great to have a set of trails like this right in a town centre.

For the navigationally challenged, KY1 3LR will take you to the parking opposite the YOU ARE HERE on the map.

if I can face crossing the bridge.
Come on over neebs, Fife is lovely. 🙂

Not sure if what went on at CV has anything to do with this discussion tbh…
    Having said that…

Just had a quick scan of some of the funding applications on http://www.carronvalley.org.uk and from our application for Waste Recycling Environmental funding (i.e. from Landfill Tax) back in 2006:

Q15 Please provide details of charges for use and also detail any income generated by the project
Income may be from charges for entry / hire fees etc.

Access to the forest is free of charge, including free car parking facilities, and there is no income obtained from those using the trails.
There is a potential for Forestry Commission Scotland to obtain income from implementing car parking charges, from hiring the venue for mountain bike races, demonstrations days etc. or from making other facilities available for lease, e.g. café. However, there is no potential for the Carron Valley Development Group to make income from the project and it is understood that any income generated by the project for Forestry Commission Scotland would be used for trail maintenance and further trail construction in Carron Valley forest.

So clearly charges for use of interest for funding bodies and presumably a change from free > charged might be an issue for some projects?

Right, off to flagellate myself with a Kelpie’s tail for bringing CV up again. Really meant not to mention that place again after handing over all my papers on it…

the saga of Carron Valley to rear it’s head
Not sure if what went on at CV has anything to do with this discussion tbh…

Would be interested to know if the funding supplied by bodies for the various mtb trail projects (and particularly the one that kicked this off) came on the proviso that they were free to use. Anyone know?

Also, anyone know what the %age of the total path network on the Scottish National Forest Estate are purpose built mtb trails?

Just to confirm that there’s no requirement for a full race licence for any of the Scottish events except the Scottish Championships where Scottish Cycling’s championship rules apply (see The Little Blue Book).

If you’re not a British Cycling member, then you have to pay a day licence of (£3 for seniors).

Anyone racing will be eligible for the The Tri Centre Scottish Cyclocross league, but only licence holders will accrue British Cycling ranking points.

    Cracking event.

Pleased with how I got on, but definitely needed to think a wee bit harder. Pee break and separate stop to sort out clothing on stage 2 and moronically stopped immediately after dibbing on stage 4 to fish out a couple of gels and fanny about with my pack.

All things to be sorted for next year…

Rode the FW-KLL section on Saturday during the Tour de Ben Nevis – had forgotten how tough even the “easy” bits were. Mad props to keep at it for 28 hours.

Double knocked off at end of August, not sure on time:
    http://w90joe.blogspot.com/2011/08/west-highland-way-doubledone.html

Fastest time for a single that I’ve heard of was 11:29.

12-14 miles e/w would be around perfect for me.

Used to have a 14 mile one which was great – even with a big headwind it was less than an hour.

Moved house which meant a lumpier 18 miles e/w and that was too much and a job move means it’s 20 e/w now. Can catch train 1/2 way in the mornings which makes it a much more pleasant 30 mile day, which I’m trying to get back to regularly.

Return trip tonight currently looking a bit pish…

No right or ability to charge for access to the countryside except in a few peculiar cases
    Peculiar like golf courses?

If by “sparkel” you mean sun, then yes that was definitely lacking. 😉

Big crowds at the start in Peebles today and pretty decent crowds despite the weather. Would be great if the ToB could get a wee kick up the calendar (or get some decent weather).

Few bits that could catch you out, assuming he fell on the descent into Kenmore. Rode it a few weekends ago, headwind kept the speeds down, but at can think of at least one corner that tightened on itself.

I’m no expert on riding with a trailer, but I’d imagine that bit of LL from a wee bit south of Invernsaid to the top of the loch would be deeply unpleasant with one.

I’ve only ever taken the higher forest road route north of Ptarmigan Lodge, assume it’s the lower one that produces the sob stories.

Still a fair few off/on moments N of Rowchoish, but OK.

Certainly a better jump than the one we built at MM07. Very few people did that with/without the person lying on the other side – Hans Rey gave it a very wide steer.

Took us 7 hours to do Leuchars to Methil (based on photos). Was a pub lunch stop in Crail in there though. Ultimately bailed in Kirkcaldy.

11.5 hours from Tay Bridge to Forth Bridge on a later successful attempt.

Some bits are very hard going – mainly carries along beaches.

We were across it a couple of times in the middle of that spell of good weather in April and it was just shy of knee level by the old bridge and a little lower by the ford (that we didn’t spot the first time).

It’s the bridge at Carnachuin that’s gone in Feshie. Easy enough ford just downstream (depending on how much water is in the river, natch).

Carnachuin Bridge, Glen Feshie, swept away

Anyone recommend me a guidebook for the region?
There are some good books (Kenny Wilson, McCandlish/Moore) out there, but they tend to cover huge chunks of Scotland so will only have ever have a few routes in your immediate area. This plus the local route guides that Bothy Bikes sell will sort you with a load of options.

Had a few days in Bend a couple of years ago and we’re off back for two weeks more later in the autumn.

Two great days riding – Phil’s Trails are just out of town and has lots of fantastic singletrack. Next day we rode in the Ochoco’s (east of Prineville) and I’d probably rate it as my favourite ever route – finished with an 8 mile swoopy, dusty descent back to the cars. Hopefully the weather will still allow trips to the river trails.

We stayed in a house in town, so not able to comment on camping. Try http://www.visitbend.com/

there’s no way it was just a “call in”!
    Ach, you’d be suprised.

When we did the Carron Valley Bike Fest, food standards turned out to inspect the caterering firm (hog roast) and the police turned up to inspect the booze licence of the local brewery. Am sure that they were both just passing…
