Given that we seem to be stuck in perma-autumn, we might as well start now…

    🙂

it’s been a loooong time since I rode that loop, seem to remember that section being a fairly wide (but less than LRT) track from where you cross the end of the loch.

THere’s an agreement between Forestry Commission and British / Scottish Cycling which sets out (some of) the fees involved. In the initial drafts of the Scottish one at least, the fees applied to anyone organising an event, even if organiser not going through British / Scottish Cycling. Can’t find my copy of the final agreement, but one of the parties involved could supply latest version.

    I’d suggest trying Lamberton
Yup, that was the folks that my friend tried. Very helpful.

the western part out to Stirling earlier this week

Haven’t ridden it since the extensions at north and south ends.

As folks above say the around Boarhills is a frustrating on a bike with significant portage sections on the rough stone steps, but I don’t recall if being horrific. Found the long beach sections more of a chore.

“Roughneck Earth Rammer” is an awesome name for a tool. 🙂

V1 trailfairy homemade McLeods at Glentress broke at the weld IIRC. V2 versions looked more robust.

For local trails at the moment, a power de-minger would be quite handy.

Friend of mine was looked at getting some sent over from the US and came out at $50 for shipping the heads only for two.

Asphalt rakes not too bad a substitute for the raking / shaping / tamping bit. Wonder if someone with welding skillz could add a sharp-ish edge plate to a heavy duty rake to make a FrankenMcLeod, rather than starting with a spade like Northwave mentioned?

All depends on what route you’re riding and whether you have time in schedule to ride at a trail centre on the way.

Ford just downstream from where bridge was (track forks down to it at cottages) and is rideable when water low. River a bit deeper at bridge remains (mid-thigh at bridge vs hub deep at ford).

Good quality estate road on W side.

Used the Spean Bridge one last time I was up (2008). No problems getting parked and bus stop pretty much outside Spean Bridge Hotel. 10 minutes or so and no delays.

First met Nick at Cheddar in 2000, although knew of him before that on Bikemagic and the predecessor to this site, GoFar-mtb.

Like a lot of folks I know in the mtb world, our paths would only actually cross at 24-hour, singlespeed races or the occasional gathering of the clans like Jockstock.

For someone I probably only met less than 20 times, I seem to have a lot of happy memories of Nick, like the comical collection of midge bites that he proudly picked up doing timing duties at the first Kielder 100.

Or watching the fireworks with Kirsty, Nick and their dogs at Eastnor in 2005.

Or even a shock blonde Nick stepping over us to be sick in a corner of a Bristol club before SSWC01. Happy days…

More generally, I’ll remember Nick as being someone I could bump into at a race in a corner of the camping field and be in good company.

You’ll be missed. Love to Kirsty, his family and friends.

it’s the openness that really upsets me. a website, location and dates months in advance, a simple entry process, places still available. gah! how dare they.

    f*ck them. f*ck them all.

I wonder if there is some ambiguity here. The actual Ciaran Path runs from the Blackwater Reservoir up to Loch Treig (along the Allt Féith Chiarain). However, the MTB community seems to have decided that the name applies to the section from the Blackwater Dam to Kinlochleven along the River Leven. It’s possible that this discussion is about two separate paths.

I thought it was as a result of the KW book until last summer, but there’s a sign marking the Ciaran Path in Kinlochmore. SRoWS have it running from Kinlochmore to a point not very far up the path up the N side of the River Leven towards the Blackwater Dam.

£68 with BA last October for Edinburgh > Seattle via LHR and back again.

Bike in a Planet X bag – rotors off / mech off / bars off. Only “special” addition was dropout spacers.

    I don’t have access to a photo/postcard printer

Exactly. Bloody elitists. Next they’ll be saying we need a special bike or a bike.

Had horrible problems getting Contis (for tubes) onto a Crests, changed rim tape to thinnest I could get and watched vids. Some Kenda SB8s fitted OK, but want to run X-Kings on these wheels. Operator Error – should have read up a bit more before ordering…

Crests coming off, Mavic XC717s going on. Seems a bit wasteful, but if I get a puncture in the arse end of beyond then Crests are a liability.

Anyone want a fairly new pair of 32h Crests? <100 miles.

Looking forward to it. Should be able to get a nice wee circuit – unlikely to be a a straight back and forth along the Esplanade – using High Street > Whytescauseway > Wemyssfield > Hunter Street > St Brycedale Ave > Kirk Wynd > High Street.

Hopefully there will be some support races on the circuit beforehand to drag folks in. Would be great if we could get something like Otley Crits up here.

Penny Farthing the obvious choice for pre/post race refreshments. 🙂

When I worked at Gyle I’d do bridge>B800>past Elizabeth Yards>Burnshot Road and then just A90 & Maybury Road rather than down through Kirkliston & dual carriageway – only a few hundred meters in it.

A90 cyclepath is a joke and A8 one isn’t much better.

UK launched in 2003 I thought?

Anyhoo, I was briefly the Scottish trailbuilding rep whilst I was involved in the trailfairies at Glentress. I think I was contacted once during that spell. Given that, our good position on access up here and a distinct lack of interest (IIRC Scottish membership was very low) I let my membership lapse…

Seems like more of a need from a trail advocacy POV south of the border.

Beecraigs took a tanking in the storms of 3rd January and a lot of stuff is still blocked – check out the parks website for more info. http://www.beecraigs.com/
Intriguingly there’s something on the Friends of Beecraigs Facebook page which suggests mtb trails are in early stages of development.

BeSpoke trails on Callendar Estate (admittedly over the WL border) are great – superb example of family friendly trails near a large centre of population. http://www.bespokefalkirk.co.uk/ Red is red in that it’s a little steeper than the blue, but not technical in any way (unless I’ve missed them…). More of this sort of thing!

life on hold for 5 yrs – it’s not the new forth road bridge. It’s a project with about the same complexity as building a shithouse in the woods
Based on your in depth knowledge of a something in this spehere I presume? Or just usual STW bolloxology? 😉

You’d be surprised how much time (and your own money) you can spend on a “minor” project as a volunteer. The one that broke me was (hopefully) a one off though...[/url]

if the chain was too tight to get off, then how did they get it on? did you remember to loosen off the little bolts that enter from the front of the track ends (if you have them of course)?

QRs fine with a chain tug, not so fine without.
