Marty, I think the work at Carron Valley started with volunteers
Yup, but the trail in use now was designed by Paul (with the input of the volunteers) and built by Grieves (with volunteers doing prep and snagging).

and then was picked up by the FC
    er, no.

not entirely sure what happened to be honest although I understand there was a bit of a kerfuffle about it
    read all about it[/url]

I’m sure the organisers would love to be able to do away with it all and not worry about it.
exactly. all the brave talk about guerilla races is fine until it’s your arse on the line.

Saw a nice film about this at the Edinburgh Bicycle Film Festival last year. Looks a great idea, but cannae see it catching on here (sadly).

You going to be there then Marty? Just fail to see how 50 per entry is justified
Yup. Entered earlier. £50 is fine for me for an event like this.

Once you start organising races (I’ve been part of putting on two), you realise why they cost what they do. Looked at doing a biggish “backcountry” loop (c 35 miles) for the 2nd of these, but costs and logistics put us off.

There’s a lot more to it than photocopying some entry forms and buying a roll of hazard tape.

    Insurance
    Permission (Forestry / landowner)
    First aid
    Toilet hire
    Marshalling
    HQ (hire / easy-ups / marquees)
    Catering
    Course markings (tape / signs)
    Goodies
    Prizes

    Get the drift?

Back on topic – 100% road at the mo’ (unless you count the Forth Road Bridge cyclepath as off-road).

Best ever commute was Cramond to Edinburgh Park along the River Almond. Riverside path or v. quiet roads. Lovely.

    Are you in Burntisland?
Yup. Sorry, only know the roads in that neck of the woods.

have you tried magic.gov.uk for route finding? bit of a PITA to use, but good for detail.

time for a south central fife ride?
