TheGrifterSound™ isn't necessarily a sign of impending failure. Have had them develop that almost immediately, then last for ages.

There was a freewheel reviewed in ST about this time last year, whose name escapes me. Believe that's still going strong.

Freehubs for the win (except when they fail too).

    Fer shure.

Cap when it's cool. Buff when it's cold. Woolly hat when it's freezing.

if anyone fancies a stylish Scottish Cyclocross cap, then see the SCX shop for details.

    Bon!

big weekend of racing in the Scottish Cyclocross series. Racing both days at Glenmore Lodge, near Aviemore. Going to be great.

knowing scotland it will be either bloody freezing or warm and you will be eaten alive by the midges!!!
if the first couple of words are correct then you'd know the last few aren't at this time of year. 🙂

we were up in Carron Valley installing trail counters a couple of years ago and had an entertaining conversation with a forestry contractor who was in working adjacent to the trail. let us know the safe distance to be near on of the badass harvesting machines and it was a long, long way away.

we also had some contractors in doing trail work at the time, so had blocked off cannonball run top and bottom with logs and an old section of chainlink fence in a frame (building site gates?) – all signed & website up-to-date. imagine our surprise when a rider emerged from the trail and claimed not to have realised that the trail was shut…

is it really not possible to pedal up some how and then ride it?
you could ride up forest roads to about 250m, then it's only another 400m (vertical) of bog trotting to get you to the top gondola station.

    piece of cake. 🙂

they're a bit keener on closing the bridge to bikes these days. guff here.

smart riders avoid the shitty A90 cyclepath by heading towards Kirkliston after Cramond Brig and then up and over via Wester Craigie Farm or heading further west and up and over to Dalmeny past the hollowed out bing.

there's a pedestrian/cycle lane on both sides of the FRB, but only eastern one is open at the moment.

No worries – thought it must have been a typo – or booze :).

WHW north of Crianlarich(e). Yup, that's probably the best bit on a bike. There's been some work done on the path between Bridge of Orchy and Inveroran, so that section is pretty weatherproof these days. Devils Staircase likewise (since the mid-80s).

you said clockwise is the best
anti-clockwise is best IMHO. the day i tried it clockwise was pretty horrific weather-wise, but i still wouldn't do it that way round on a sunny day…

is it all rideable (I'd like to go with a friend but he's fairly new to this) ?
nothing particularly technical, but it's a good sized ride with no easy escape routes, so not sure i'd recommend for a newbie.

The problem with planky stuff is that the raw materials work out a lot more expensive than conventional trails, even if you get volunteers to do the actual building.[/i]
depends where you're building it. build that far up a (proper) hill and it becomes very expensive to helicopter in enough rocks to build a sustainable trail across a boggy hillside. as was pointed out a while back, boardwalk like that is a lot easier/cheaper to remove in future too.

nope. that's not the line they're planning on re-opening. closest stations will be c. 20 miles away. get pedaling! 🙂
