alpin knows what he is talking about as he has a number of bikes and sees it for himself.. the majority of people working in bike shops would agree.

shimano and sram both offer diffrent functions here and there at the higher end of the groupsets but shimano is a diffrent ball game when it comes to quality.

matt, you said you cant see shimano making anything to compete with xx.. the way i see it ,sram would have to go up another level of groupset above xx to equal the lifespan, the consistent function along with the qualities of xtr as it is.

i love the feel of new sram stuff compared to the stuff from the early days but its still got a lot of catching up to do with the real big S in other area`s besides how they work*.

*like how they work when nice and fresh and new and erm…non sloppy ;O)

ahh i know that last spot/pic. its amazing there eh? folk would argue you photoshopped that to hell but the scenery really is that amazing.. and the film ..aye, you canna beat it!

well you cant remove a dent. and if the rim decides to travel towards the hub the spoke tension drops.

i didnt quite follow what you were saying there, sorry.

This thread seems to be going into a lot of detail without considering the obvious.

I thought someone would mention that rims take a beating.ok, a flow might be tough but hey ho, so is a 321 disc rim and look what folk have done to those in the past!

you say you rode them for a few months and found the spokes loose.dont doubt the build, you probably made a brilliant job of it but remember wheels dont stay round.flat spots not visible to the eye could be the problem.they might be running over a distance of 2 or 3 inches (or more) and although small enough not to see out of a wheel jig, big enough to lose you the tension you once had in the spokes around that area.

Its not always the quality of the parts or the build of the wheel thats going to cause spoke tension to drop off.

The costs of helmets have gone up recently. i paid about 200 for a raid 2 last year and it now retails about 280. I tried on a few shoeis and arais in aberdeen and found the arai feeling the best fit.. once i tried more of the same on in edinburgh i found that the raid2 was the better fitting which confused me as i was planning the arai.my lids a bit tight but it doesnt hurt.the next size up was moving around too much so i went with the smaller size and suffered it for the first week or so.its now spot on.

Reading about stoner and how he`s probably the only guy that can ride that bike adds to the thrill when you see rossi coming back at him. after reading that stoner was taking seconds out of them all each lap a few weeks ago with all the riders saying things like “we just cant touch that bike, its a diffrent league”.. and to watch sundays race to prove its not just the bike.. just makes it really good to watch.ok, he did talk of the tyres going off or being the wrong choice, maybe they will get it right next time :O)

knowing a lot more about the ins and outs of the bikes, the riders etc would make us realize what all is happening. i dont really know a thing about it but to know stoner would have gone into the race knowing how good his bike is,then seeing timeboards later on in the race showing him that rossi is 10 seconds,9 secs,5 secs,1 sec, behind him,lol.. must have been a rite ring twitching experience without the mirrors to prove it!

My 1999 seat ibiza diesel is still giving me around 550-600 odd miles to a tank and its on 186,000 miles. a decade ago its mpg was one of the highest of all the cars i looked at,supposedly topping about 74mpg when driven steady and its not even a small car with a small engine.you can put the foot down, get upto speed in an acceptable time and still get amazing miles to a tank.i never expected to get 74mpg but with the claims of it being one of the best,i had to be onto a winner.I had a 1.5 diesel before it that had a similar upper end of the fuel economy that used about the same amount of fuel on longer journeys, probably because it was labouring more to get upto speed etc.

10 years on i wonder why even the smallest of cars with small engines struggle to equal the 1.9tdi 90bhp.

I always seen him as the coolest of the bunch back then and always think about what would have been if he didnt have the accident as far as what all the top racers of today have achieved. I recon he`d have been ahead of some of the big names we know of today.

I went up last year and parked at Chisolms? bridge. rode up the track and did a counter clockwise loop that descended down to the lodge at the lochs..then a short ride back to the car.Its a bit of a hikey bikey ride in places but i dont mind that. Theres also a few high fences to get over but the scenery before you drop back down to the lochs is unreal. To find the point where you have to cross the river and link up to the track that takes you back over is quite tricky to see.I was lucky enough to see 2 walkers traversing up from the river. a map would no doubt help but i didnt have one, i was on one of my dodgy tourventures.

I blew on lactate ladder last year LOL.

I laid the bike down.. splayed myself over a big slab and unclipped the helmet until things went back to normal and set off again. I`m so unfit.

I had the mid weight hein gerike? leather gloves that retailed about 65 quid last year and the wristwrap tore off at the seam.i upgraded and now pull my gloves on a bit more carefully! if the leather was tougher and stitched better/designed better it probably wouldnt have torn while wrapping it around my wrist.. but it did.

I have 661 kyle straits under my textiles and evo elbows under both my leather jacket and textile jacket no matter what the weather.Ive also just trimmed down some oval pieces of high density kayak padding/foam to fit into my hip pad pouches on my leathers.
on the odd occasion i go out for a careful cruise with no elbow pads for that non restricted feel but only on short rides.i feel naked without them.i`m talking 3 rides this year with no pads.i just dont fancy falling onto bare elbows, knees or hips.

Ive watched daniel progress for years during my lunch breaks and stuff and i never got bored of watching what he had learnt the night before. The list of new tricks came every day and he still keeps adding to the list.yes, theres some bmx stuff thrown in here and there but who in the the world of bmx can throw in trials riding like he can throw bmx into trials? nobody. and before you go off on one about what should and shouldnt be, theres no rules. Its a free style.

    Freestyle.

Its similar to a dj mixing 2 records and coming up with something that sounds better than the original records sounded in the first place.. but some folk seem to be viewing his riding style through their old school bmx spectacles with that “this has been done before” attitude and coming from there myself,i can see the tricks of 20 odd years ago filtering through in his runs but coupled with the height he does stuff at,the narrowness of things he rides on etc.. its a diffrent kettle of fish.
fakie manual to tailwhip with 26″ wheels weighing that amount? comee onnn! Its bonkers.just amazing to watch. maybe its this whole new combo of riding at such an intense level that intrigues us all.

(well, most of us.. :::puts on an early 2hip video to keep Mr agreeable happy::: ;OP)

I found sowerbys filming and daniels riding as enjoyable,or possibly more enjoyable than when i watched van homans section in a certain vid.that was amazing back in the day for me.

The best 24/26 inch wheeled street rider in the world today.

    no?

    ok,who is?

I dont know what she was doing or listening to when jokes were cracked on stage but every time the camera went back to the lounge it showed the others laughing.. but not a chirp from her.shes either thick as mince, too bothered about what she looks like when the camera turns to her, or couldnt understand what they were saying. she chuckled when ross said something about being fat in the cardboard coffin i think but ..aye, shes a rite gonk.

on a medium i had an inline thomson post with the saddle flung fairly forward on the rails with a 32″ inside leg. If i rode it with the saddle lower,i felt i could ride stuff a bit easier. strange i know.. but thats how i got on with it.although my leg extention wasnt what i was after, if i lowered it i found i could climb steeper stuff a bit better in some ways.

    funnily enough.

    hijack! sorry.

Ive got a pair that are in veryyyy good condition. Not a mark on them.not dents/flat spots. They look like they are a month old.

I am running another set of wheels on the bike right now so i cant afford to have another pair of wheels hanging around.Theres unused valves, skewers and axle options for the front hub all bagged and unused.

    mail me if interested.

Oh and beware of the wire in tyres if you go fingering the glue around the hole after rasping it.unlike a bicycle tyre, theres metal throughout the tyre in the treaded area.

For a bit of extra weight i might look into it as its never noticed on the motorbike.

Jeremy, im just back from this eves ride. I rode to loch maree and back to Inverness.. that road is just amazing. wish i took the camera as the sunset over Loch Maree from the viewpoint at the top (where some cyclist was camping) was a picture.

    * and i`m still alive! Ive got out of that bad habit of sticking in 5th and 6th gear and cruising along.starting to enjoy the confidence of the new BT014 at the rear in the dry (after trying to learn thru the winter)

lots of chicken strips left but using a bit more of the revs compared to when i got the bike.. so far ive had no dodgy moments. fingers crossed.

I rode up to Dunvegan on Skye a few months ago and rode past Dunvegan castle. The road gets rough up there and im not sure if i picked up a sharp stone up there, or closer to Invermorriston on the way home.. but i punctured in the dark.Joy!
I had a tiny electron led to see what i was doing so i held it in my teeth as i picked out the embedded stone. After removing it i roughed up the hole with a top top rasping tool, hooked on the plug and slapped glue everywhere inc inside the hole and only managed to get the plug 2/3rds of the way in as the hole was quite small.I trimmed the plug down and i rode at 50mph back to Inverness but it had a slow puncture after that. I used a tiptop kit that comes with 3 co2s but i would recommend taking around 6 of the same size for a big tour with extra glue. I also had a can of foam but didnt want to fill it up if i could help it.. bike shops hate it.

Fill the inside of bike tyres with some mtb specific ust goo? I might take a cup of milk down to the bike shop next time i get a new tyre!
