jeremy.. from what ive gathered in the past i would guess that you keep on top of your brakes by keeping the pistons clean and always keep them running freely with no drag. unfortunately the amount of folk that have brakes running poorly (when they think they are running perfectly well) is quite high. Ive gathered this from the shops ive worked in and one other thing.. if folk bedded a number of sets of pads in and took them to the races they would get better life from them.as for folk boasting/complaining about going through dozens of pads in one event.. try asking any mechanic on here that can slip a set of worn out pads from a hydraulic brake and fit and forget a new set without having to clean and reset pistons. If they say they can do it with never having to do a little extra work then its lies.so how can the riders expect a set of pads to be running freely after they just slapped a new set in under the bloody moonlight at 3am with no extra fettling?! the amount of pads replaced at races will be suffering the premature wear through this lack of going the whole hog on getting things running spot on ..and thats acceptable seeing as how time is precious but some folk have got to learn that its not all about pad quality and how bad the conditions are.

has anyone gone to the likes of the puffer with half a dozen sets of avid pads for their BB7s and ran them with heaps of clearance either side to help prevent the crap from constantly wearing the material? you would have to accept a little more lever travel but surely this is the answer to a lot of probs some folk are having.

I notice groups of foreign bikers passing and not bothering to wave. maybe they just get sick of it and see it as a distraction that could cause an accident.I dont mind that too much as they have probably done over 1000miles and just want to get on with it.

I remember returning from kyle of lochalsh earlier this year and it started to lash down.after eilan donan castle i saw a biker on a harley with a passenger.the driver had old gear on with an open face helmet and old style goggles.I didnt nod,i waved with my left hand and not a fookin flinch from him. His face was soaking and his nose was nearly the highest part of his body.If its a nice day i usually keep waving so they see it in the mirror. not a great thing to do but by **** some folk are unreal.

Its like riding out of the carpark onto the trails at Glentress as folk come down the hill.blinker-central.

    Hi Keith
    got a cyclocross bike yet?

good find. that looks good. one bit of singletrack in the pics looks familiar. possibly up from the bothy near coulags.could be wrong though. daniel mentioned getting choppered into torridon but i thought it was ages away.peat will think its the best thing ever up there.they need to descend into achnasheen before heading home.. start the heli back up!

    where did you read that?

Heres what one company wrote in their warranty section:

"Crash replacement program – because enough people do lay down their carbon bikes in a variety of ways (racing, driving into garages with the bike on the car, others…) that would not be covered under the warranty policy"

I like that one. If i crashed one of their bikes i would probably tell them over the phone that i laid it down during a race.on second thoughts, i wouldnt want a silly phone bill so i would probably opt for the just riding along story. :O)

It does seem to be the other way around.although some brands dont like to state anything in their websites.others do,and theres ones that are a bit vague.

1961,most of the big players have lifetime but theres some out there that will have less than their alu frames. some others offer trade ups to newer or revised versions instead of the usual warranty they offer on the alu hardtails.

i drove past coulags/torridon on the bike earlier this afternoon and further on i stopped to look back at the mountains. just stunning. sango, thats a nice pic. Arkle has got to be one of the most beautiful mountains in the country. the first time i saw it the sun was hitting it and my jaw hit the floor. luckily i had the slr at the time.

Petrol in a diesel car – really bad"

surfmats got it wrong way round. if he had got it right then my diesel car wouldnt have made a further 130k after doing this twice by mistake! it also ran better after making the mistake.

you plan to go to the alps? why? how on earth do you know its good for riding over there? oh yeah, youve seen pics other bikers have talked about/taken pics of/filmed over the years and taken a fancy to it! how dare they do such a bad thing.;O)

some folk on here need to look at the big picture instead of moaning about some trails getting name dropped.without folk talking about trails around the world you would still be stuck riding yer local stuff.

good wee vid though, yorks. what camera was it?

loving the ideas folk are giving you! pre jumping it lol.take a look at the conditions he was racing in along with the bike fs.

the seat is at xc height so its probably a good bet to slow down a little and stick to the ground a bit.carry on doing that and you`ll stress yer bike out. fine if yer riding a heavy duty bike with the seat down but its a bit on the edge by the looks of it. last thing you want to do is end up completely out of the race so i would slow it down a tad!

I slid off the edge of the seat there.pedrosa looked like his bike was on the limit every time they showed clips of him.. was amazing that jorge caught up and passed him. he was gagging for it.

martinxyz why not simply have them made with the right grease fill and seals in the fasctory?

its you that mentioned filling the bloody things up with grease, not me! make a bit of money out of this by quitting the pissin about filling bearings and fit the ones yer on about in the first place. or is it those high end ones that you are eventually filling up at a later stage?

The pain i had using my mtb spds/mtb shoes was awful. moving onto a road shoe and pedal is well worth it.

    martinxyz

If a bearing firm choose to use certain percentage of grease to each bearing for whatever reasons, why do you pop them open and over fill them? why not replace the seals with better quality ones?

dont bed all pads in with a series of stops to roast them. some brands want you to take it easy to begin with so beware and read yer manuals! as usual.. dont go by everything you read on the net.

aye but the bbb ones fit nice and snug with a dusting of volcanic ash. you dont need any of this fancy blue park stuff.

sometimes i finish off a ride on the zx9r on a dry roundabout real late at night and have a ride around a few dozen times.i dont hang off but just never seem to get that far over (judging by the 3mm of chicken strip left) I sometimes blame the sports tourer style but deep down i know that someone that can corner could do it on a zx9r with ease. i could bank over on a bmx fine enough and on a brand new street triple R i took more of the chicken strips off on a few roundabouts than ive ever done on my own bike.i noticed this looking at the tyre when i arrived back and mentioned it to the sales guy.. it didnt even feel over at all. its just a diffrent bike.
like ti29er says, if i go out for a relaxed easy ride down loch ness i could flow around corners in a sit up and beg position and feel confident in dropping/pushing the bar a bit and finding that ive been over not that far off what i achieved on the roundabout the night before!

calling rad a stroker and saying some folk talk utter crap on this forum with the orange 5 comment over the 5 spot is a bit harsh.. especially when you look at the number of ex 5 owners that have ridden and switched to a 5 spot (also a certain other horst link 5 inch travel bike that caught the attention of a lot of people over the past 3 or so years)

theres about 4 on this forum that seem relieved to have made the switch and a few others where i used to work that have all said the same. NEVER has there been anyone that went from an orange 5 and been let down.not my words.. just folk that have owned both.

if you had a bike with a good weight in it and picked a good mountain to descend down then you might get the knee down.. but who cares. just buy a motorbike and aim to do this!
