what fun we had on those. and the other mags that were fun to bring within an inch of their life was acorn mags. they only cost £19.99 a pair so it was no big deal if you popped them!

question: acs and odi.. who calls acs rims “acks”? its a.c.s. yeah?

now why do mtbers pronounce odi grips like bill oddies sirname? grrr.

the alloy hubs changed to molded kind of style up front/alloy hub rear. not sure if and when they got rid of the alloy hubs completely. hoffman used them in his early days as they withstood 10ft+ hookups that no other wheel could.i knew a guy that had TW1s around 81-82. i havent seen a pair since.

I might even have a better quality pic from strathy on a cd somewhere. its deffo sharper than yesterdays pics. its got that same look about it. a bit like a painting with the sun on the land.

mat, when you wrote “thats a shame”.. i thought you meant the “being a sponger” part to begin with. lol

I do feel a bit alien turning up at thurso east.it looked spot on, not too scary for my ability (but i would have still got a good pummeling)but i always feel like surfers would turn their noses up if you got in.boarding alone with slabs covered in kelp is a bit scary. ive spoken to a few guys that have surfed there for years and they say its just the occasional brushing over the kelp that you feel. who knows. I wouldnt like to face plant in a foot of water with nobody there! having said that, a kayaker was paddling with the surfers at melvich.. who knows if he got out alive or not. heh.

I would love to have the skill to surf/survive at brims ness but as you can see,the rocks are a bit crazy. the last time i was there i stood out at the point and noticed some rocks jutting out of the water around 60ft out.i pictured it being quite deep out that far but i was wrong.

i ended up at strathy and it nearly went flat. so i didnt even go in after getting changed.

besides.. i was sponging. not a real surfer.

    Ive had both.
turner geometry is a better ride when you start riding to yer max.
the 70 degree head angle on the epiphany is super pinpoint but when you want to start taking it as far as you had taken the turner.. it gets a bit skittish up front at speed (with same fork).
a horst turner wont flow as freely on its bushings (remove the shock and feel the diff between them) as well as the bearings in the epiph.ive had a good few turners apart and know how sticky some can be even from new. the ellsworth, like just about any bearing setup in any frame, has virtually no stiction.nothing fighting against yer shocks function – a good thang.
unlike the turner, the ellsworth will not develop wear in the stays/pivot points. a turner should always be stripped and checked for wear even when theres no play in the bushes. quite often you will come across a set of stays with wear from the top-hats that has gouged into the non-replaceable contact points.it takes no time at all to check this every so often so no excuses.. but for those that like to just pump grease in and only strip it when play develops, you might be in for a shock.it can happen.some more so than others.you wont get that with the epiphany.

both bikes descend well but the turner beats the epiph. it gives you confidence like you have just had 6 months of techy downhill training handed to you in an instant! depending on what bike you will be coming from.. it could easily be the same for you.there wont be many frames out there much better, if at all.

climbing.. the epiphany is a better climber.it might not be as stiff at the rear end but the way it functions seems to make it a livelier feeling bike on the ups (even with the same shocks)

the 5 spot is a stiffer frame but where you would expect this to be an advantage.. its no always the case.it might all help in keeping the turner rock solid whilst descending but ellsworth have the bike dialled in to still make it a better climber.

the build and finish of the epiphany beats* the turner.. the welds, the rockers machining, the etching instead of stickers, the hardware used for the pivots.turners headtube badge is nicer mind you.

*The build of the frame isnt always about what it looks like on the outside. the amount of failures with ellsworth isis and truth frames compared to turner failures was a big diff.truths were failing quite often. you asked about a horst 5 spot and going back to that era, they were as strong as they get.hardly any problems at all.
you asked about the epiphany though, and my one was/is spot on with no cracks. compared to the build of earlier ellsworths its looking good. I have never gone on a search to find out how epiphany owners have been getting on crack-wise so i wouldnt know. know one or two people with them and so far,i havent heard of or seen a failure.

it would be good to know if anyone else has had any issues with them.

just replaced pads, discs ans springs all round on the 106 last night. (£130 quid all round!)

some pistons wind in so dont try pushing them if this is the case.i could turn the rear ones in using an allen key across the slot. it was nearly possible to turn it by hand.

pairs of pads are the same shape but one might have dimples on the backing plate. just take note of the setup you have before stripping it down. take pics to look back at for the way the springs are fitted etc.

buy a wire brush, find a few cloths, get some quality grease along with a dollop of coppaslip.

seen this on a few bikes. its a fixed rotor but theres movement in some of them. it can feel like the pads moving in the caliper but a bit more extreme.nothing as far as i know, has been reported and sorted out as yet.

just dont stumble upon that vx220 that was rolled at a track and put back together! it was a few years ago now, but the guy selling it on some forum was found out and they saw what had happened to the car in its previous life.not sure if he knew about what happened to it but the thread must have been 20 odd pages long!

for under 10k you have so much choice.caterhams or westfields are options.. but dont get caught up in the idea of the likes of civic type rs, mini cooper s and mark 1 elises as being fast.nippy but a bit out of depth compared to what you could have.

you are willing to spend money that can buy you a car that can do so much more than the likes of those.

    supercar territory.not hot hatch territory.

well thats it sorted. i went to mcncompare dot com and they couldnt come up with a better quote. i called the guys i am currently using and they came down from £189 to £162 ish. i mentioned that its been over 5 years since i had points on my licence and that the bike was worth a grand less than when i bought it.

she said the value wouldnt change things much but she still managed to knock it down to £160.

aquote is the company. they even search around nearer the time of renewal to find better deals for you.. then post them to you in the mail.all you have to do is check to see that they offer all you need and its done. no messing about calling so many insurers. They even end up cheaper than price comparison sites.

so from £495 when i passed.. to £380ish, down to £160 fully comp in 2 years.

try a pair of levi 47 rodeo hero jeans.washed and shrunk quality denim.you will pay a lot more than next denim but it might be the answer.
ive got a few pairs of next jeans and the last pair have ripped open at the groin within a month (denim seemed to just fail and shred in a big way) and the fit wasnt great either. but thats my problem, i shouldnt have bought them!

what can the golf r32 do 0-62 in? 1/4 mile? 30-50 in third? ,50-70mph in 3rd and 4th?

with a few hundred quid spent on a decat, airbox, qep flywheel, it could do 7 seconds dead consistently 0-62 even with my fat ass in it.even hitting the stopwatch just before it hit 65mph on the clock you would get these times.it didnt cost thousands.

A racing puma would be a nice buy these days but i dont like the driving position along with the view out of it.

If “involving” means noisy, falls to bits, a chav’s dream, easy to break into/nick, lacking in almost any safety kit, rattly, etc, etc then yes your car is way better than an R32, RS4, whatever.

No,be nice, thats not the definition of involving and you know it ;O)

Once again, go watch the clips of it up against cars from the same era.

    martinxyz

    “bollocks?”
1)my car is only 0.6 seconds 0-60 behind the times you just posted if you want to go into silly time comparisons.
    2) its got less than half the bhp of the cars you just posted about.
    3) the cars you mentioned could do possibly do 180mph.. but around the track it doesnt mean shit.

yes surf.. we know how amazing the rs4 is in many ways, but when you get into another car and ask yourself the big question “just how much do you enjoy driving this car compared to the other?”

The fact that you even end up asking yourself that question gets a bit confusing. it sounds on paper (or a forum) a diffrent league.

    and it is.

but like i said, its not about power,bhp..

    Involving is the word.

One day you will realize that some of the best fun you have had on 4 wheels was hitting 30mph in a go cart. It doesnt have to have power to have fun, surf.

    part 1 for surfmat: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zjwCApxxDRc
    part 2:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R_0QtSdx-6g&feature=related

have a look at the cars, the times and the overall results matt.. then get back to me with your arguement on what is so spectacular about having 240+ hp. If you look at my previous post i mentioned a few things why someone would buy a car. My choice out of that list would be “involving”

    whats yours? :D

Ive never tried a golf r32 but when folk say that they dont feel quick off the mark to begin with.. is that not the point where you should call it a day and get something that IS quick off the mark and keeps on pulling if you are buying a car that has to have performance in it? what else is so special about a golf R32 for you to buy one and sacrifice the instand grunt and pull that other cars have lots of? it looks nice, but why not get a diesel version instead of wasting money on something that dissapoints in other areas? because it looks and sounds nice?

Ive had a shot of an RS4 2008? model and its unreal but like ive said before.. enjoyed the drive of my pug 106 on the way home over the backroads better. its a diffrent class (if any class at all lol) but what is the aim in buying a car? you buy a car for a reason.it might be for the size of it to carry stuff, the mpg,the handling, how easy and cheap it is to repair, how involving it is,the power..

The R32 might have some of those in its favour but for a car with a performance badge, why would someone choose an r32 for this so called performance when the performance (as described by the owners themselves as not too quick off the mark)isnt that great? Do people buy cars for the sound? surely you could alter a diesel version for a lot less money to make it look as nice as an R32 and save a lot of money? for less money you could have an evo 8. as roomy as the golf and 4 door.

Is it the original inner cable?

maybe you or someone else has fitted a 1.2mm inner.fit the correct cable along with new outer casing/ferrules. 1.2mm shimano cables can cause problems inside sram shifters. It might only be 0.1mm but you can see and feel what can go wrong by fitting the wrong cable.

    sram inners – £3.99

squirt some rock n roll cable lube down the outers as you fit them.. unless they are pre lubed.dont spray gt85 down them.

GHP (yep, greg hill!) race frames etc will be distributed out of scotland, gw.how cool is that!

Ive worked in a few shops that tried to do a bit of bmx over the years but i think you have to be bmx and bmx only for it to do well. If theres a race scene nearby and you are the closest shop.. then this will help a lot.

juan.. you asked what roads i ride on. you asked this:

“Martin you say 16000 milles. How much it is in real mileage AKA out of motor and dual carriage way. When I give my mileage, I take out the commute to work as it’s motorway and town.”

Juan, I read the above in a non threatening way, yet you come down on me like a ton of bricks. why post these comments regarding the pics i posted and the size of my fuel tank ..about congratulating me on the fact that i dont have to refill as soon as you would etc? Think about it. was i boasting? yet again,no. If you think about the comment then you could find something in it to take the piss out of me even more but you failed to spot it.

A sportsbike like that having done that mileage on one tank around the gorms? do you get my point now? or will i have to explain the type of riding i was doing that day? yes, not anything to brag about. It was slow and steady. If i said i got 100 miles on a tank then that would be bragging about the speed and time i managed it in.

I posted some pics.you seem to have gone off on one and taken it like i was showing you some of the best hairpins and straights to ride on in Scotland. Why? They were only pics from some bike rides. calm down and enjoy the scenery, or mock it if thats what you feel like doing because thats the impression i get with the “call that a hairpin” comment.

You and tj have a fascination with this 16000 mile figure. its a rough mileage i have done since getting the bike.I would never dream of questioning or mocking someone over a mileage. Its the type of riding they have done that matters to me. Anyone can go on cruise control and do big mileage. I want to feel awake on the bike with troublesome roads ahead… not braindead wasting my life on euro runways. like i said with the weather last winter, the bike sat there for months and i havent been as keen to use it as when i first passed.you both seem to read this as if i am making out that i have done heaps of miles in the short time ive had it (not the case – its pretty low really)
and if you scroll up juan, you can read that i mentioned it because i am happy that ive managed to stay on the bike over that mileage. Not some cocky boast. Maybe you are used to that kind of thing on here but not everyone is like that.

Like Epicyclo says about the roads up here. They are a bit of a handful in places. Its not all about cornering too, the roads are a mess in places and choice of which brake to use in a split second can often mean staying on the road or not.Up here you often finish a ride questioning why it took over six hours to do a certain distance.. this is the reason why. The roads are brilliant in their own way. a real handful in places.. and one of the reasons why i have no intentions of riding to Moscow or anywhere in Europe. I havent ridden half of the roads around here and although a lot of them might be very rough and slow for hours on end.. they will keep me happy for years to come until i ride all of them and get bored. But will i live long enough to see them all?

Its nothing to do with experience. how many times have you crashed Juan? and you, Jeremy? I was speaking to someone earlier about this Jeremy. Do you remember the story you told us last year about the group ride you once went on? you mentioned something like 100+ riders. You started near the back of the pack and ended up something like 6th from the front. Riding a group ride and ending up there makes me wonder what the whole day out might have ended like if everyone on the ride had the same attitude and goal.Didnt some young guy get pushed past the limit and go off into a hedge?

You see, its not about experience (no really, its not. listen up and ponder this before rolling your eyes at that comment! If you are happy with the level you ride at wether its cruising along at low revs ,briskly riding along at mid revs, or hitting it off the limiter to get the most from the bike… as long as you enjoy what you do, you dont annoy other road users, cause accidents or have accidents, keep to the rules and get no speeding tickets then this is what matters. As long as you can complete your biking life with a good memory of what you have done, have no injuries.. then surely if we could all end a life of biking with this under our belts, we have all ridden well.

I wont be posting anything else on this but to look at the big picture.. its starting to look like some forum motorbike thread that we hear about where folk are reeling off how good they are. Its time to stop for me. its enough to put the OP off biking. Sorry mate!

I came to the thread to mention that i never regretted having bought a big bike after being told not to. Yet it went arse over tit and ended up in true STW fashion with childish comments on silly little things like my fuel tank size and a picture i posted of a hairpin on the bealach na ba.

    Bonkers.

not going to get kids into the R26 though. unless they come along in another car, then you can let them inside the R26 and let them play on the climbing frame in the back!

claiming to have done 16 thousand miles? did you read that as if i was proud of that in the time ive done it? i mentioned it because i am grateful that i havent come off in that time. you misread it as something like a boast.

“You are an inexperienced rider. Just note that several people with ten or twenty times your experience have a very different view to you. Who is right – one inexperienced rider or several highly experienced ones?”

You really are one in a million with the way you speak to people on here.you are now talking to people about how they ride and judging themhaving never seen them ride. Not only is this pretty bad, but the fact that you have a moment to consider what you say to people.. and come back and edit.. you dont.

Its this that makes you one in a million when it comes to stw. (as well as the other forums you frequent when i am out and about on a motorbike)

    go have some breakfast.
