For years i have noticed that when i sit still i often find myself moving ever so slightly to align things up around me.

right now i have just moved to align the edge of a seat up with the edge of a cardboard box behind it.

Ive also just moved a mug beside me so that its edge sits spot on next to the edging around it. (it was half over it so i moved it – dont ask why)

    …but do tell me why.

oh,i served my time as a joiner and quite often i would be sighting stuff so maybe this has something to do with it.

Allen. ive got a pair of T keys from 1989 (when i got them free with a chainset i bought)and although they dont get used as much as the ones at work.. they dont look like they have aged at the tips at all.

I bought around 12 pairs of smartwool ones last year. some are mid thickness in a low cut which are good for summer riding and theres diffrent lengths and thicknesses of the others. some seem to be more tightly woven than others and are a diff sock. i cant remember which ones are which but they have done wonders for my dodgy feet.i had been getting flaky skin on my feet since i was a kid whenever i got my feet wet and its always been a mare to sort it out. with merino they help quite a bit and they feel bone dry after a days use when i kick off my shoes. I would often have have damp feet after wearing trainers at work with cotton socks but those days have gone.

They were selling for something like £4-6 quid a pair in sports direct.

A funeral on wednesday probably didnt help either.

yeah and they kept getting harled with snow and grit each day to top it up.. then it froze! they couldnt even hack it off to get into them. i think there was a bmw on daviot hill that got out after a few weeks but what a nightmare. then there was the new overtaking lanes.. the L200 and the x5. people putting the foot down and spinning off into the ditch in their 4x4s ha! those composite chains look good. only 2 sets left in my wheels size.

re: you shouldnt be pushing it in grim conditions..

you dont need to be pushing it for the car to turn into something similar to a curling stone. A few years ago now at the north junction of aviemore, a guy hit a lorry nearly head on right next to me as i was turning off the A9. he split his head open badly and his L200 was a write off. He was o.k. but the next thing i was worried about was the northbound cars about to pile into the accident in near whiteout conditions.I started walking south to wave down the cars heading north so they wouldnt pile into the lorry and the cop and fireman told me to “not bother”. i said that its just going to end up with more accidents and they didnt bother warning anyone. about 2 mins later a three or four car pile up happened behind the lorry. I raised both arms, grinned at them and walked off back to the car.
The cars werent going fast but the slid like curling stones.

sweepy i missed one day going to aviemore too! the police were pretty much going to crack down on folk leaving Inverness one morning it was that bad with drifts across the A9. how well did your car survive with all the clean snow for, what? 6 weeks of snow snow snow?! my car didnt take much of a hammering with all the snow last year. i hope its the same this year.

snow tomorrow on the peaks. I have my battery charger set up for the camera to get snowy wyvis pics tomorrow morning.

i think i had gislaved norfrost 2s last year and what a diff. the guy at work got them on his mondeo too and they made a huge diffrence. really worth it.

i have managed fine over the past 12 years going to Aviemore each day on normal tyres but under braking, the compound and pattern of the winter tyres are worth their weight in gold when they are really needed.

to spend crazy amounts on the bike but run the wrong tyres on the car is so stupid.we all get away with it but when you really need them, and you dont have them.. you will be sorry. Its fun falling off the bike through poor tyre choice.. you can laugh about it. but dont think its a laughing matter when you slide off the road!

i had a look at chains and winter socks earlier. still not sure what to go for yet.i dont know who makes the toughest socks.

i put 266mm brakes on my car.it had 247mm as standard. its got better callipers too and the braking with the standard brakes was crap compared to whats on it now. still not brilliant but with a a bit more power than when i first got it, and more importantly, eibach springs and bilsteins.. it corners better and feels more planted. so you just want to go faster in it. this is where you need to start upgrading brakes. brakes should be first in all cases!

I agree with mat about the silly hikes in bhp with just a measly chip. what you need to do is get YOUR OWN car on a rolling road to see what it can put out as standard. THEN dyno it again after then chip fitting.you might even find that the 130bhp tdi that you had was only kicking out 115 in the first place. when the golf with the tdi 150bhp engines came out they reconed they were closer to 180bhp as standard.so a lot of folk paying superchips for the chip thought they were getting this instant 30bhp from a chip that wasnt even mapped for their car in the first place.

Theres so many folk on forums that will tell you they had a superchip or whatever on its own and they actually ended up with less after spending £300. So many peugeot tuners will do cams and something like an emerald ecu and get the likes of wayne at chipwizards or sandy down south to sort it out as well as possible on the rolling road.. but there is NO WAY they go there expecting a chip/map to give them 30% increases in bhp and torque without a bit of engine work.

druid, did you do the loop counter clockwise from chisolms bridge to get to that point?Did you do it on a bike? I took some pics from that exact spot and they too came out like paintings. its just the area thats so nice. i love the view at the top of that track above the lodge.

Ive fancied a triumph street triple for the past year now. I loved the position but with knowing next to nothing about bikes i put the clunky gear change down to it being brand new.. guessing that it would probably smooth out with age.

The other night i was talking to a guy that rebuilds engines and after asking him about what he thought on them.. he didnt seem that impressed with the triumphs. he said he has to rebuild some guys race engine each year and the camchain wasnt a pretty sight once removed either. he reconed compared to the guts of my zx9, the triumph build/materials are lacking.

well although the new xt 32t rings cant be fitted to the old.. the old can be fitted to the new.

seals ive never had to replace. ive never even had to clean up a set of shimano pistons. they really are so much better than some of the other big names out there.

ok thanks folks. Thanks for the offer, zed. The wheels are off right now so i was planning on doing a few other little things to it over the next week so i might have a look at what could be done in the bar dept.i cant picture it right now but i seem to remember it being a bit different compared to some.maybe a completely new crown with non kawa bars would be the best starting point.

Marky, the E1 model i have is probably similar to the zx6 you had. i think its still a 2000 model but on a 2002 plate. having sat on a 2008 R1 like yours, its like a 3rd narrower in width! considering its a sports bike and not a sports tourery type of thing.. i recon the reach of the R1 would be better for longer rides (even with the lower bars and higher pegs) It goes to show that whatever you read in the mags about the pegs being high and the bars low down on many sports bikes.. they can still be comfortable if the reach is good for the rider.

I had a wee shot of someones 600 on sunday. felt like i could ride it forever. my own is a bit of a reach.. this is only noticeable when i get a bit overdressed for the colder weather. i feel fine moving about on it on hot days when i have little on but as soon as i have a few extra layers its not quite the same. Its mainly the extra layers around the neck so its noticeable when i lean forward but have the bulk behind\under the helmet.

I thought of getting those heli bars but they are silly money to fit to my bike and i think they deffo have to be fitted along with new hoses. My model hasnt got enough hose length to lift them enough. the ones i was thinking about were £275 and only lift the bars about an inch!

Just noticed this thread and how long it is..

Top tip: read threads backwards for entertainment on stw to help with depression! I couldnt be bothered starting from the start but its quite a good way to start by scanning the tags to get a jist on whose causing havoc/not got much else to do/having yet another easy day at work.. then work back for maximus chortleus.

yeah,cynic.. and that does my freekin head in. post to post with nowt inbetween. nightmare.

benz, like i posted above.. you shouldnt have to use shims if you use the tool correctly.

    but..

if you faced everything up and could say it was perfect.. then fitted a calliper over the disc and applied the brake, then you might find a diffrence between one of the tabs and the other when measuring each distance between calliper and tab. I dont know and have never heard of tabs on callipers being out of shape or anything.. but some lightweight callipers with long arms on them could possibly be a bit iffy.I doubt it though. If this was the case then facing as well as possible would be pointless. An out of shape calliper would be a bit random though.
magura marta sl callipers are a bit skimpy on their arms come to think of it.

one other thing. If you find that you spend ages setting up a calliper and it keeps rubbing and looking out of shape.. then no matter what sequence of shims you put in there, it will never be right. the moment you face up a disc mount and try refitting the calliper you will often find that set up is a doddle.well worth facing. it saves so much time and it keeps pad wear spot on.better for the workshop (time wise) and even better for the customer (power from a brake that doesnt have pistons squirming in their bores once the brake is applied due to a badly faced mount is obviously going to be more powerful and less likely to have problems later in life)

three fish, the tool takes off material from one of the mounts, then you set it up after finishing the first face so that it takes off enough material so that it will keep the calliper square to the rotor etc.
If the mounting points were perfect to begin with, the tool wont be removing the same amount of material top and bottom.i cant explain it very well.. not sure if you see what i mean!
