Yeah I paint stripped my Raleigh night burner to leave the chrome finish underneath and it was hard work.

No, it sounds like you have recently read the big cat thread and its still lurking in the back of your mind?!

I read it the other day and on wed night’s ride I had a moment when I stopped to sort my music out. It wasn’t a problem in the past but the thread did not help one bit lol.

Last nights ride I had a moment going through a part of a wood just south of Inverness that I have heard a fox barking close by a few months ago and at the same place last night I had a thought of a big cat rugby tackling me from behind. The thought of it with the lights still on the bike and not having any vision started to play with my mind.

What I have learnt is that I need to stop reading bike forums and get out more in the middle of nowhere in deep dark forests. :O/

I can tell no difference between Campagnolo Record (sq taper) of 30 yrs ago and the modern carbon equivalent.

This is probably because its hidden due to the amount of flex in these old road frames. No matter what chainset and bb unit is in there, its going to be buckling around under load. On a stiff mtb frame ht2 is noticeably stiffer.

Infact its also noticeable in another way (without going by feel)
I have noticed many times on both road and mtb upgrades that the front mech set up can be adjusted easier as theres not as much chainring movement once you take the bike on a road test. It might shift fine on the workstand but sometimes you have to wind the mech out a tiny fraction more with an older set up as its unaceptable to ride (when under load on the drive side)
With HT2 you can adjust the mech on the workstand and its more than likely it’ll be stiff enough under load to also be rideable in the big ring. No extra fraction further out to keep the customer off yer back.. its stiff enough to set up as close to the chain as possible and you can be confident that the flex wont cause you problems.

I have noticed this on new bikes that might have had the upgrade,my own bike and numerous others over the years. Then you add a stiffer frame into it all with a fat downtube grasping the bb shell. HUGE difference compared to a steel frame with a square taper setup. Its all just moving along bit by bit.

To many.. the bike might appear a bit dull after seeing some of the bling that gets posted on here. You seem stoked on it and I think I can see why. I reckon that maestro system will put many suspension designs to shame 5,maybe 10 years from now. You obviously love riding it and came to a mountain bike forum to talk about it.

    The right place to come!

Its just a pity you didn’t realize that you might have got more positivity from a Hornby train collectors forum ;O)

Post pics next time yer out on it!

It wont be horrible as I have one with 140 pikes. I run it around 120 most of the time these days but for easy going in the saddle cruising through easy terrain I often wind it out further. I know 120 is the max but I enjoy having it fully wound out at times. I always keep in mind not to hammer it at 140 though. 140 can be so nice at the end of a long ride instead of down at 100mm in xc mode. Just flowing along flat swoopy singletrack in a slightly more upright position …ahh, cannae beat it!

Someone recently said to me when we were talking about changing the oil in the motorbike after it sitting there over the winter..

“why bother changing the oil, Its been sitting there in the ground for millions of years,4 month ain’t going to make it ‘go off’ is it?!”

Re: this car you are planning, there’s other areas where you could be throwing time and money at to see if its worth it or not.

Quick question for the engine heids: Would it be worth pouring a few hundred ml of oil in from the top before start up or will the pump be quick enough to prevent any excess wear?

If I took out everything I have read about them on the Internet and judged them on in-store experience.. I would be giving the local store around 8/10.

The only reason they will never score higher than that is because of the managers attitude to college kids going into halfords during the morning break here in Inverness.

In the early 90’s three of us were told to leave as we were a security risk. I think I remember going back down in the eve with my father and we both had a chat about it to the manager. I was well hacked off. It must have been years before I returned.

Times move on.. read about why many bikes will go to press fit in the future. Its not just for ease of fitting in the factory.

I have a carbon road frame that had the front wheel axle vibrating against it in transport wear/smash a hole through it. The repair cost about 80 quid and its about 10 times the size of that!

Once that hole gets a bit of epoxy/hardener in it.. I reckon it would be fine for life. Forget spending money on kits with woven sheets and just get the epoxy etc.

Ahh brilliant Zokes. Thanks a lot for that. I will keep this thread in mind when I need to refresh on that. I can only imagine how awkward these breech lock fittings would be when trying to fit them to anything else. You have just reminded me how different they are!

Its a shame as the lens quality is amazing. I was sifting through a crate full of pics I took on the A1 with these lenses i took about 10 years ago and the detail in the prints amazes me. This quality and compatibility would be nice to have on the 5 or 7D but if it means having to go for something else.. then so be it. Its quite a while away, though. So I suppose I need to look into what I want/need a bit more first.

    Cheers again.

It works best with an old fashion pump and closed end grips (with the wee hole in the rubber) You place the pump with no flexi connector against the hole, get someone to put their hand over the open end of the bars on the other side.. and pump it on.

Cheers! I use an old manual Tamron SP f/2.5 90mm macro with an adapter for my macro stuff. I don’t see the need for autofocus for macro work, and it was either 50 quid for s/hand, or more than 10x that for a new Canon L-series macro. For the amount of macro work I do, I’m happy with it.

Well it looks like its doing a pretty decent job for the money! I fancy buying a good body but the thought of which (as my one and only)lens frightens me. I would hate to buy a decent body with a poor lens because of funds.. but this use of old, cheap manual lenses makes things look a bit more promising for me!

edit: does anyone know if there’s adaptors to fit old Canon FD lenses onto A 5D body? Or would that be like putting a pair of deore hubs into an Indy Fab?!

    Polarisandy.. that’s a topper!

It wasn’t so much who is/were the best cut and paste kings. With what he was doing the other night on 4.. I just thought that Coldcut’s/Hxstc’s “timber” was not only way better and way ahead of it’s time.. but it had the visuals to boot as well. All in one package. I just couldn’t see Mark Ronson doing anything near that level, but as per usual.. the way things are in many circles in life.. the best at their game rarely get heard of because they get stomped on by the mainstream crap that J.Public get lured to.

I had a look a few years ago and was utterly shocked.

Shocked at how often folk from this forum were posting on it as well as how much they post on here! I left the computer and headed for the kitchen to put the kettle on in a state of shock. Mouth wide open, eyebrows raised.. waiting for answers.. but nothing came to me. ;O) I couldn’t understand where folk found the time to post and write so much. It baffles me to this day.
