Quick look at New Granite Quiver Tool Roll

My uncle popped by and mentioned that he spotted a group of bikers earlier today while he was walking the dogs.He did say that most of them were licking their own eyebrows at the time.Sounded a bit weird. It all adds up now!
martinxyzFree MemberSquare wheels have handful’s of them.
Gold, black, red. Not sure what other colours.
martinxyzFree MemberUrgh, easy Mrspoddy. That’s the last thing he wanted to hear on here. Doing any of that right now would benefit you but probably end it all by midnight for Warton!
martinxyzFree MemberTry the rear pads in there for starters. It won’t cost anything so worth a try.
martinxyzFree MemberBut we don’t wannit to stick like crap to a blanket.
Purple extreme and Prolink chain lube.
martinxyzFree MemberAye it looks dark enough for testing for sure!
Thanks for the offer but I’ll be working sat. I’m also up in Inverness so it’s quite a bit away to MM!
martinxyzFree MemberWe were riding til about twenty to eleven in the hills. Where are you to find such darkness?!
martinxyzFree MemberThere was an industry quote somewhere that said design-wise vans like transits had a 7yr working life
Ahh,thanks for that. I have been looking for a van the past few days and transit connects along with the next smallest transits or thereabouts were on my shortlist. Having scoped 2005-2007 models on the way to work earlier I was amazed at how thrashed they looked, which is fine being a workvan, but the rust on these Fords is a joke, and its not through knocks and scrapes. It’s coming through everywhere. It seems I need to steer clear of most 2003 or older models (the age that seemed to be around the pricepoint/mileage I was aiming for)
Some folk are advertising some nice looking older connects that have been with them from new but obviously well over my budget.
Interesting to see at least 2 of them with higher miles. One with 250k and another with 260k on it.
martinxyzFree MemberSay goodbye to Tabletennisitis with a pervert.. i ii i mean a reverb.
martinxyzFree MemberNo idea. Just have to put up with it! Have you ever had them at the knuckles? I have had it twice where they go in deep enough to stop the movement of the finger ever so slightly. I thought it was arthritis kicking in the first time then I noticed it going red before it popped out nice and easy.. leading to a free flowing finger. What a joy.
martinxyzFree MemberCables attatched to the correct side of the pinch bolts on both mechs?
martinxyzFree MemberThat’s One million, thirty eight thousand, five hundred miles with lots and lots of tlc. ;O)
martinxyzFree MemberAfter passing my cbt I wanted to get a 125cc for getting used to bikes before the big test. I fancied a honda cbr and after searching around I decided to have a look at one up north. Can’t remember if it was Wick or Thurso. I managed to get a shot of a transit that I could take it home in so I filled it up and off I went from south of Inverness. It’s a long drive up there and if anyone knows the road before and beyond Berrydale Brae’s then they’ll have a good idea of what it’d be like in a transit on a windy night. This endless drive with a big roof rack made me want to take this bike home even more so.Even if it was the wrong freekin colour I would have probably still considered it. After arriving at the town I called the guy and like your experience,peter.. he sounded like he couldn’t be arsed telling me where he stayed, let alone about the bike! Big pauses on the phone and giving me next to useless directions to the ‘house’..I arrived and knocked on his door. The guy looked and sounded like Andy Pipkin, the wheelchair guy played by M.Lucas/little britain (mind you,he probably thought the same about me :O)) I knew it was going to be tough. He led me through the corridor sporting the filthiest skirting boards I have ever seen to the back door. Never have I nearly suffocated myself by holding my breath walking through someone’s house but that night tested my lungs like a pro free diver. God knows what he was trying to cook (or eat)
Anyway, the bike stood there at the back door with a cover over it. He muttered something about it like ‘i told you it was a honda replica on the phone’ if I remember right. I think I got a bit confused at this point and angry at the same time as the ‘Honda’ was revealed. I think I remember spotting the corroded wheels and then the brown chain to begin with.. and before I knew it I could witness the furry bolt heads elsewhere. Not to mention not a sight of the word ‘Honda’ anywhere on the bike.. just Hyosung (pretty sure it was one of those)
I was shocked and said something along the lines of ‘its not even a Honda..and its nowhere near good condition.. right, what a waste of time that was’ as I walked back through his corridor of doom without saying another word.
Raging. Effin’ raging all the way back to home!
martinxyzFree MemberGet the rear mech off and check the alignment of the hanger. Align it if it needs it and refit the mech. Sight the mech from the back of the bike closely in a selection of sprockets at the rear. Check if anything looks odd alignment-wise in different gears and if the jockey wheels seem to run further and further out of alignment with each gear change then you may have a tweaked mech. Also check how the cages of the rear mech line up with the sprockets in (vertically,if you follow me) different gears as well. Are they running fairly parallel to the largest sprocket as well as at the other end of the cassette? Have a sight of it in as many different ways as you can and make your mind up on how its all looking.
Also check that yer LBS sold you 1.1mm inner cables, not 1.2mm. They can jam up in the shifters amongst other things.
martinxyzFree MemberThe organizers of these events always get folk asking the same thing leading up to these endurance events. I don’t know off the top of my head the figures for marquee hire/erecting/dismantling,the amount the forestry might ask back per rider, first aid,the insurance, fuel for generators, generator hire, paying Sportident to come up and do the timing.. all the way down to giving the marshall`s a little something for their efforts.
Are you thinking along the lines of 200 riders @ £21 with ease or a case of struggling to get 100 riders @ £42? I don’t know what all would happen if they had 300 riders as opposed to 100 riders cost-wise.Obviously a charge for a further 200 riders from the land owners would crop up but I’m not sure what else.
When you look back to us racing there 20 years ago for 2 hours,it cost us about 12 quid. £6 an hour.
So another arguement (not mine!) would be that these sort of endurance events are working out @ under £4 an hour.
martinxyzFree MemberLoving Hora’s double post there. 15 minutes to edit it but it was left. Possibly all innocent but I can’t help comparing it to walking into a sports shop and noticing two of the same shoe on the wall.. Just in case we missed it the first time. ;O)
martinxyzFree MemberDon’t reply to him. It’ll do his head in wondering if you ever got the message. If he believes that you must have got the message then you’ll be messing with his poor head even more so as he still won’t know what you’re thinking.
Don’t stoop to his level – play mind games!
martinxyzFree MemberI would fill the lever syringe full and flush through until its looking clean. Do this top to bottom, lever to calliper,as the calliper end will no doubt be holding more crap so there’s no point in flushing more of it up through the lever seals.
Once flushed through I would then half fill the syringes and start working back and forth to try and dislodge any dirt that could be blocking any of the ports.Don’t bother de-gassing. It won’t help what you are aiming for so it’s a waste of time at this stage. Once everything is flowing freely and you have a good bit of pressure in there.. remove the pistons with the pressure you now have by pumping them out equally to enable easy removal.Split the calliper and clean the bores and lube the pistons with silicone lube.
Refit pistons and start bleeding. This might sound like a heap of extra work but in the long run,it’s not. After messing around with quick-fix bleeds you soon learn to clean things out at the calliper to enable the best possible return of the pistons. Also remember to fully fit the pistons into the bores (don’t start the bleed if they are at all proud) and block them off in that position with a block and some paper layered up to keep them hard into the bores. The avid bleed block allows the pistons to move slightly,I don’t use them.
Worth buying a new seal for the calliper once you split it.
martinxyzFree MemberIs it an avid bleed kit or just a pair of syringes with suitable connections?
martinxyzFree MemberHe spent the money for a camera he had his eye on.. on the spokes ;O)
martinxyzFree MemberTorridon,or more a case of Coulags/achnashellach,is only about 1 hour 10 mins from Inverness. It’s not 1/2 a day to get there. Basically an extra 15 mins or so more than driving from Inverness to Golspie..
Take yer pic.;O)
martinxyzFree MemberProto front ends for mavericks,Mmmm! I would rather try this than anything on the market right now.
Funny you mentioned about going up to a large. I typed out something along the lines of going onto a large with a shorter stem earlier on but I deleted it. I went over to the maverick site and noticed the size large seat tube was around an inch longer than the medium but I couldnt think straight (what with getting this computer/internet sorted out) and convinced myself that even with a longer seat tube,it wouldnt sort my problem out.. and 5 foot 8 on a large was just being a bit silly, even with a short stem.
When the durance came out I think I remember craig from Extra taking one up to Laggan demo day years ago. I never took note of the seat tube (never knew they had changed it) but wouldnt mind trying one out sometime if I ever spot one out on the trails.
martinxyzFree MemberBeen keeping an eye on them over the past few months and had a look on their site last night. The cut is all wrong for what I’d be looking for in cycling jeans. Had a look at the jacket but the back of it looks crap.
Check out Fred Perrys old school cycling gear that just came out over the past few days. The jacket is like a bin bag but I quite like it. Shoes on the other hand..
martinxyzFree MemberThanks Cougar. I had a look under it and tried a few times with upper and lower case but no joy. I now have a list beside me of about 15 different possible passwords from back then and I managed to fluke it. ‘connected!’ Its taken a while but after starting fresh its all running super sweet. At one point I updated a heap of windows stuff and it ran poor after doing so. Someone mentioned to me that some of the updates might have been more useful to vista, and more of a problem for xp.. I’m not sure at all.
It’s nice to have a fresh xp up and running though. Wish I done this ages ago. Thanks for the hints cougar,it put me on the right track to finding the key!
Cheers all.
martinxyzFree MemberThanks folks. I downloaded malwarebytes and it picked up about 5 trojans. AVG also found stuff along with spybot. Still lurking though! At one point when I was on facebook avg popped up and notified me of around 6 trojans. I dumped them and tried to sort it out but for a few minutes they were popping up as fast as I was deleting them! Only on facebook and no other sites. Using facebook through aol was o.k. but google chrome didn’t want to know about it.
Anyway,I bought a portable storage device for my pics and movies incase I lost them. I have since reinstalled xp and everything is lightning fast again. (like it was 2 years ago!)
The only thing is, the router and windows arent getting along anymore. Something to do with a network key. Its asking for a network key but I cant remember it. Anyone know how I could sort this problem out? Surely it must be fairly easy to sync them back together again.
My phone obviously still connects to the wireless connection but this change to the netbook has me baffled.
Argh!
cheers
Martin.
martinxyzFree MemberMboy,I know someone that used to own a Maverick and he was also told that by paul turner (or one of the other guys at Maverick) about reversing a thomson set-back. He binned it and bought something else.
My trouble was the height I ran the seat. I have a short upper body but 32″ inside leg/5’8″ so the amount of post I had out of the ML7/5 seemed more than I have seen on anyone elses maverick. It threw me right over the back. Not a problem at all on the flats and easy climbs but as soon as things got steep.. it was a joke. Even with a u-turn pike wound down.
I always fancied sourcing a few maverick rear ends and keeping them for a rainy day. The idea of making a front end to bolt onto that rear (if it was done right)could possibly be one of the finest bodges ever made in mountain biking. Another thing to look at is how possible it is to steepen the seat tube. Not by much but if you check the durance picture in the geometry page, you can see where things would be possible. Easier said than done but still possible.
If someone had a crack at it before it all ended then the reversing of set-back posts could have been a thing of the past. Or future.. who knows.
Oh well.
R.I.P.
martinxyzFree MemberGood job Stoner is packing it in next year then! Oh,wrong Stoner.
martinxyzFree MemberI bought the cd rom when it came out and found that if I clicked as fast as I could then I failed on every hazzard. At the end of the test each of my click points were too quick on the scale. So it was worth buying the cd rom as I learnt that I needed to wait a fraction of a second before clicking to pass the test.
You also get away with another click,so I would click approx 1 second (if that) after the first click.

Maverick mono link, for sure.Yep, if only they had the geometry sorted for steep climbs I’d still have mine.
I would have to disagree on a 29er being the most efficient climbing 120mm regardless of whatever brand. I reckon their 26″ wheel version on a climb would blow the 29er away from what I have found.
You can go on and on about how there’s going to be a bigger contact patch and how it’ll make rock gardens on the climbs easier all day long but after coming off the spearfish on all kinds of climbs, nothing beats a good 26 inch wheel for plugging away at slower speeds. I feel I can accelerate easier and keep the momentum going so much easier on my turner flux, also my zesty with 5lb extra weight!,over the lighter spearfish.I even went lightweight with non tubeless tyres on stans rims, pro 2 evo’s but it just doesn’t cut it on steep slow stuff. Like I guessed years ago with the hardtail 29er.. it really is the problem of accelerating the bigger wheel at slower speeds that makes them 2nd best for me.
so, maverick monolink (in any guise, even an ML8 would blow a lot of 29ers away if anyone would give them the chance),giant maestro, turner with the dw in its flux are my top 3.
martinxyzFree Member*and please don’t type the letters A,C or M (in that order or any other order)as it doesn’t help ;O)
martinxyzFree MemberWell what a topper of a day. Scenery was amazing. I did a clockwise loop from Corrie Hallie and shouldered the bike at the shenevall bothy up over the side of the mountain. Luckily it has been very dry but the thought of doing the traverse around the hill would be a mare if it had been raining. It was dry and fairly spongy most of the way with hardly any bogs so I got off lightly.
Really nice techy climb to begin with that takes you to a bridge crossing half way up. The sight beyond this is a climb up a rough track that zigzags up the hill. Its a bit of a kick in the teeth as you weren’t expecting to see an extra climb being so steep. I nearly blew on the way to the summit as I was expecting to clean it all from where I parked the car. The final bit at the top had me off (not bad going with bonty mud x’s and a pike that decided to lose all of its rebound control as soon as I started the climb!)and a fast walk helped me recover instead of laying down and feeling my heart explode. One day..One day.
The scenery kicks in at the top of this climb as the track flattens out before gradually descending then getting fairly steep, rough and loose before meeting up with the winding river at strath na sealga. Passing the first bothy (Achneigie)brings you on to a nice bit of singletrack all the way to Shenevall (bothy) The hike a bike must be around 1000ft up through the pass but didn’t seem like too much hassle.
13th, did you find out if you can link up easily to Gruinard bay along the loch from Shenevall at all? The track seems to stop on the map but it looks like it would be a great place for camping/biking sometime soon.
I only have phone pics of this trip so I might post some over the next few days if any look decent enough.
edit: this was a great trip as I’ve never seen pics of the scenery from walkers or bikers so it was all new to me. Bit of a risk not knowing what it was like but It all worked out fine and I got back with the sunset to finish off just at the right time.. even if it was nearing 10pm!
martinxyzFree Membercup of tea
shower
a whole chicken
bedI just tried this but I nearly choked on its claws. I didn’t have time tonight but I would usually have half a pint or so of milk with a banana, dollop of honey, a yogurt and a wee bit of brown sugar in a blender. I seem to feel back to normal a lot quicker after downing one of these.
martinxyzFree MemberWell the bonty mud x are still on the xc bike and I’m leaving now! If I get anywhere I’ll report back (with pics of course)
Yes,the circuit the walkers talk of sounds the same route.
