Well that previous post was not hunting for anything, just being chatty. No need to get bitchy and bring up a whole heap of stuff and pile it on me when its others that are getting yer blood boiling.

Jeremy, when I bought that bike of mine I drove it home from Killin to Aberfeldy then on to the A9. The bike had approx 120bhp more than my previous bike and the roads were wet with leaves. I found out when I got it home that the tyres were around 20psi! A slow, scary and dangerous first ride. Not sure what the Loch Earn road is like (just looked on the map as I thought it might have been the road that I took the bike home on)

I have driven the Rannoch road a few years ago and although its a long empty straight I would never feel safe from deer at say,70mph +. Yes its a 170mph motorbike stretch but I would never feel safe even around 80-90mph.
In a modern car with lots more stopping power than a bike I still wouldn’t feel safe on that road at 80-90mph in daylight(with deer in mind). They appear from nowhere. A big stag will be more visible but the young deer can just come in to view at the last minute. Scanning around 50ft in off the road left and right is a mare once you get up to speed. The brain can’t cope with looking out for deer as well as looking at the road in front of you*. At speeds above the limit its impossible to keep an eye on everything as much as you need to (to be 100% safe from animals running out)
Infact.. why a freekin deer?! Hitting a badger that’s just been spooked by 13k revs on a motorbike will still take you out.

*but I have to admit that I often do night rides on the motorbike down Loch Ness, maybe head towards Skye and do a loop over to Glen Garry and back home again. Sometimes in the daylight I’ll ride a stretch slow and have a look out for deer before doubling back for another crack at it 8)

If you own a motorbike and have driven the road between Invermorriston and kyle of Lochalsh you’ll know what the road is like a few miles either side of the Cluanie Inn ;O) As far as deer are concerned I reckon I’d be the first one on STW to have one take me out on the bike so.. aye, nice knowing you’s and wish me luck on my night rides!

(didn’t come to this thread to preach or argue.. just tell the truth)

    edit: maybe I was preaching?!

Hi Junk,I think I found this pdf a few weeks ago when the problem first cropped up with my post. I might mail you later/tomorrow,cheers for that.

Hi mboy, yeah this blocks getting made up is what I need to look into. It sounds like the same chap as JY is talking about. Are you sure you want to get rid of them,Junkyard?! Maybe I should get them from you and send them to whoever. I take it the chap has a fresh set kicking about to copy.

It’s not desperate but something I’d be happy to sort out. I do like the lever operation without the cable.. and for most rides, its easy enough to grab it.

I haven’t really thought about the whole process until now. Its not like getting dropped off a heli with ski’s or a snowboard where you will often see the guys get sorted out with their kit before dropping in to a powder filled slope. Dangerous, yes.

Now picture the day when you first head up a mountain to fall face first off a ledge with no water, snow or whatever beneath you.I think,up until now, I have been thinking along the lines of it just like a mini hang glider on their backs.. kind of letting their speed pick up before the think starts working. But its a bit different with this. Their body is the framework and if they let their minds get a bit flustered before, during or after take-off.. they could easily lose it and chicken out of that flight mode position.

If they fall face first off a cliff and can hold their minds and body together for those few seconds to enable them to not flinch and spiral out of control to death below.. they are pretty incredible people.

    Definitely not dicks.

This is a sport few folk do and there’s a reason. Its never going to be easy to get into. So many of us that have never tried any of these types of sports might consider this similar to base jumping, sky diving or hang gliding but it really does seem to be something completely different when you think about the level of skill involved and how well they have to screw-the-head before attempting this. The closest Ive been to any of this would be looking over the edge of the great slab in the Cairngorms, without a jump! Still nowhere near high enough to attempt the likes of what they do but to consider falling face first off those ledges… just one of the wildest things in extreme sports. I can’t think of anything more stressful or mind boggling that extreme sports people get up to in this world before actually ‘doing it’

    Amazing people.

I run the xc Ethirteen guide on the turner 1×9 and when the going gets rough (with no pedalling) the chain will come off from time to time. Its fine for bimbling along on easier stuff but it can and will drop every so often. Its happened about 3 times over the past year. Not a big deal at all but if you want, edit:NEED (like in races) the chain to stay on all the time, then get something that makes it impossible to drop the chain.

I don’t mind the risk of just the upper guide.I don’t race it and it keeps things light and simple.

Lots of respect for the kids who ride brakeless and still manage to hold manuals all around the skatepark.

This is the (ex)owner of Fit. Robbie morales would amaze you on a bike. I have seen him rider super smooth around Livi skatepark with no brakes, easily managing to manual around both bowls. Can’t stress how smooth he rides, he could probably ride skinnies and never buckle them! (20×1&3/8ths rim width)As you can see,it doesn’t matter how big you are,if you can ride well you can’t blame your weight for not being able to do it.

I ran the rear only brake lever on the right since I broke my left hand. The two smallest digits never felt strong enough when I needed the brake on hard. I now have a dx v brake on the old bmx on the right hand side as the cable runs better to the noodle along the left side of the top tube.

I also have a Haro similar to the one questioned above. Its a team issue from 2009. the cable guides are on the left of the top tube and it came with a carbon/alloy right hand lever. You don’t really need to get used to it. You rip around a bmx track and know that there’s only one brake to scrub off speed with so there’s nothing to actually get into yer head!

The stability of the haro with the 21″ top tube is very confidence inspiring compared to the 20.5″ bike at the track. The Haro alloy frame with chainstays nearly 3 times as deep as the chromoly S&M stays feels like a rocket ship when you put the power down.Fine if you plan on doing a bit of racing or blasting around the track.
Don’t think mountainbikes re: stiff/uncomfy or flexy/more comfortable. It’s not going to come into it! Its a strength/weight/stiffness thing that will be your choice with whatever type of riding you plan to do.. and if you plan on messing about jumping all the time or never leaving a skatepark, then go with a steel frame. If you want to go fast and like the idea of a light bike, then its probably going to be an alloy race bike you’ll end up with, although many riders still race steel (and kick arse on them too)

Don’t think that the bike will always feel completely alien with 20″ wheels. It takes me around 3-4 days to get back into it at the track coming off 26″ wheels so at least give it time. To jump onto one for a few mins, you would think its near impossible.. but stick at it. Like the others have said, consider a cruiser.

I have a spearfish for sale over on the classifieds right now. Also bb30 xo chainset.

I have fitted an xt with a ps adaptor set into another spearfish and so far theres been no problems. Its not perfect but it rides fine. For my own bike, I chose the correct matching stuff and although I havent ridden it much.. it hasnt been a problem at all. It also went together easier than any other combo I have ever fitted.

    Why?

The boss has something like a kenda blue groove on a ztr on the rear of his bike and the first bead makes a snapping noise when it pings onto the rim. The 2nd bead is an utter joy.

If he punctures,I think it’s a case of walking home and dremmeling the beads to remove the tyre!

Even michelin comp dh tyres are easy fitting compared to this combo. My flows with bonty acx 29er’s are a nice easy snug fit.

The music puts me off watching it. This, along with slow motion action of 360’s and supermen (in 2012) will never trick me into thinking its a great mtb film.

Like I said, its 2012. Have a flick through what the world of bmx is like right now and try going back to watching mtb vids of people doing bmx tricks from 89. Nice with a mug of Ovaltine if you want to get to sleep quicker but its not for me. I do love the high quality of it,though. Only I wish it was wildlife in slow motion I was watching.

Good read,Druid! I have never camped/cooked/done more than one night with the bike but fancy trying another one nighter in the Coulags/Coire Lair area after work some time soon. From the last trip, all I can think about (other than remembering the tent poles) is remembering to take a pair of decent earplugs. Silence along with the fresh air should keep me happy til sunrise!

What makes a good guitar player, though? The argument of so & so is better is pointless unless you’re a guitar playing critic. Knopfler,Page,Beck or whoever might be classed as better guitar players by people that know about guitar playing but for you and I, no matter how well someone uses a guitar, if they aren’t churning out the kind of music YOU want to listen to.. but the guy down the road IS churning out the music that floats your boat (albeit with a little less skill) then as far as music is concerned.. there really is only one option! Listen to the stuff that does it for you. Not because yer brothers best mate read an article that said Eddie Van Knoppage is the worlds best.
A great example(music)of why we shouldnt always go with what’s classed as the ‘worlds best’ as it means JackChit.

You still have to remove the l/h shifter, loosen the guides on the downtube and the chainstay, remove the outer, remove the front mech?

I would also remove the bb unit and clean the threads up tonight. Also look out some spacers to save hunting for them tomorrow. You could save half an hour by doing other faffing.. tonight!

Edit: have you got the right length chainring bolts ready to fit?

Nick, it won’t be stuck. It will appear to be stuck but with a good solid support under the frame on the driveside,it should drift out a breeze.

Just don’t let anyone whack it to death while it hangs on a bike repair stand. No point in stressing other areas of the frame for no reason.

    martinxyz

You can’t fit a 2.5mm spacer to solve it and think its the do all and end all. The plastic safety tab’s pin on HT2 chainsets won’t locate into the hole in the axle. You could remove it but then you open up another can of worms.

The paintwork on earlier Titus frames was a bit of a problem. The stone chips were so bad that some customers got resprays foc.

I take it the same guys that were painting them around 2006 are long gone?
