This has cheered me right up! Started a new build yesterday with a Rocket 650B frame, and when I’d (nearly) finished, I moved it out of the work stand and the first thought was “**** me, that’s heavy!”…. ;-)

    Morning all
Just to update the thread, when I dis-assembled the brake and the shifter, it appeared that neither of the Hope mounts would work, and though I was told about a mount that kcnc did, that was a no-go either, as it is around £13.00, and doesn’t come with any mounting hardware. So in the end, I’ve just ordered a bar mount shifter, and will either keep or sell the I-spec B one – a bit of a poor show from Shimano, but its’ only money eh?

Yep, sorry Tech 2 Evo – just my luck! Best laid plans and all that…

Well I’ve got/had for a while a 29er, and have just bought a 650B Cotic Rocket, so for me, definitely not! Even trying a more up-to-date 29er, left me feeling underwhelmed with the larger wheel size – IMO good for a hardtail, but each to their own eh? They’re “only” bikes after all! ;-)

Bolle here too – used to use the Contours, but have now switched to the Rush – flat arms seem more comfortable under helmets. The number of times I get whipped across the face by undergrowth on my normal routes means I never ride without glasses now – it feels as wrong as riding without a helmet!

Another vote for Target Composites – have a look at his website for info, or give him a call to discuss:

I have a 29 FS and a 650B hardtail, and recently went on a Cotic demo day – loved the Rocket 650B, didn’t get on at all with the 29er version, whilst my mates loved it (so much so, that one has already bought one, and he is flying on it) – just goes to show there’s no substitute for trying things unfortunately! Personally, when I change the FS it will be for a 650B, but honestly, whatever suits you best is the way to go!

I use the Fox Launch Enduro pads, which don’t move on my skinny arms, if you’re after a lighter weight pad?

Went from clips to flats then back to clips via A&E and a month off the bike…. 5.10’s and Vaults before anyone mentions poor choice in either – just lousy technique! Decided that flats are for people with better technique (or less pain receptors…) And by the way, chicks don’t dig those sort of scars….

x2 for Fox Head Launch Enduro Elbow Pads here – work for me too, a little sweaty on very hot days, but only seem to crash on my elbows when I forget them….

Apparently trying to sell the premises, but no luck so far… Don’t know whether they are going to re-locate or just close when its’ gone though.

Believe Mudhugger are doing a fatbike guard depending on how wide you want! I use a normal mudhugger on my 29er and it works a treat :-)

I swapped a 32T oval for a 32T circular, and found the “normal” ring harder work, but that might be my weedy legs…. The new ring is a Hope Retainer ring, and interestingly it has dropped the chain a few times, where my Works Components oval one never did – though that may be down to me leaving the new 11 speed chain deliberately long in case of breakages?

Had a Giant contact switch – lasted one ride before the cartridge died – bag’o’shite…

I have a set of the lightweight Fox Launch Enduro pads that I use nearly every ride, and a set of hard shell Nukeproof pads that I use for more technical rides – though I’m thinking of getting some lightweight pads to use the rest of the time. I’m the first to admit I’m (very) accident prone, but like most people have said, elbows and knees damage easily and take a long time to heal! As for worrying about what you look like, each to their own I suppose, but I ride for me, not for other people. Fit is important though – I was recommended some TLD lightweight elbow pads which I found horribly uncomfortable, despite two mates who swear by them – definitely try before you buy, or use someone like CRC with a good returns policy.

Had both (in 29″) – both good, both go tubeless no problem, would definitely recommend, especially if On-One are selling at one of the usual silly prices!

Have avoided RM since I ordered a car jack to be delivered to my work address – large business that has been there for years – and they delivered it elsewhere, but as they had a signature, told me in no uncertain terms to **** off! Tried all the complaints procedures (which were a nightmare!)with no luck – since then will trust RM with Chrimbo cards and nothing else.

Did it last year (into an horrendous headwind all the way!) – great event, well organised, but wouldn’t do it again – too many miles for the few interesting bits – worth doing once definitely though! Last year it was split into 4 groups, so if you’ve not done it before, you get put in the last group to go, so even if you get to the front of your group, you’re running into the back of the previous group – so no real chance of a clear run at the climbs. I found these were full of (presumably) roadies who just stopped dead in front of you on loose uphill sections and walked – which meant that’s what you had to do – and they were worse on the descents! Sounds a bit negative, but it is a good day, and I’m sure you’ll enjoy it!

Same problem here, but just on one wheel out of 4 (All Hope Enduro) – all done the same way and its’ driving me nuts!

Why not just take the front wheels out and keep the bars straight? (Or am I missing something?)

Got one of the recent, internally routed ones – first ride out smooth, quick lower & return – perfect thinks I! Second ride out – failed… Took it back to dealers, to be told internal cartridge had failed (!!) – got my money back and got a Reverb – reminds me of the old adage about buying cheap leading to buying twice!

A mate of mine uses these and swears by them, and he always rides on flats – says they’re a bit heavy, but very effective! I ride on flats, but just use cheap Decathlon overshoes on my 5.10’s and chuck them when they die! The Altura ones are on offer a Cyclestore at the moment too…. :-)

I made the switch about a year ago and have stuck with it – mostly as I felt myself being less confident when clipped in on technical sections after a couple of crashes. However, I haven’t found it an easy transition, and after being off the bike for nearly a month after a DMR Vault shin-eating session I’d heartily recommend some decent pads! Better technique? I’m not convinced – just different as far as I can see – though with my minimal skill levels that’s probably no real conclusion to draw! Try it, and see what you think – after all, its’ what works for you in the end! :-)

Another thumbs up here – great fun descending, good on the climbs – I bought a frame and built up from there as funds allowed, so can be a cheap way if you’ve already got some kit you can use. Frame far exceeds my ability – though that’s not saying much!

I’ve had a Nerve AL29 for about 2 years – good bike, great XC, but on much steeper stuff seems a little overwhelmed (to me) at times, but then again I have 2 friends who have the same bike and they seem to rattle down the same routes with no issues – so its’ clearly just me! More travel would be a bonus though, and I ended up swapping out the crappy Fox forks with 120mm Rebas which were a vast improvement – despite Canyon saying I shouldn’t go over 110mm to keep my frame warranty. Sizing-wise I went for a large and I’m just under 6′, and a medium would definitely have been too small.

Sorry Mike, just the upper CSU left – and that is completely shot :-(

Ha ha! Thanks 100mphplus…. ;-) (You can tell he’s seen my riding!)
Have heard back from Mojo – anywhere between £320 – £450 to repair my old forks depending on what they need / I wanted – gulp! Canyon have said that as the 29er came with a 110mm fork I’d have to stick with one – it was actually a travel reduced 120mm, so that’s not exactly straightforward., and that a 130-140 fork would invalidate my frame warranty – no surprise there… Pretty much set on some Revelation RTC3’s at 130mm and hope for the best – thanks for the advice guys!

Thanks enmac, but gonna go for new forks rather than s/h – cheers anyway.

Ha! The usual, as little as possible, but need a 15mm axle and min 120 travel, so guessing £200 minimum, up to £400 I suppose – looking for the biggest bang for my buck, with – hopefully – a decent lifespan!

Well cleaned it out and replaced the bearings – not well though, may have to re-do – will let you know how I get on. Still, if it works, its’ only cost me £3 to rescue it!

30.9mm post with 220mm shoing above clamp, so guessing I can use the 150 version?
